What a match that was!!! Maria should have won the third set and the tourney easily when she was already 4-1 ahead but as usual she lost focus and let Li back in. I was worried for her health at times as the court was so slippery but obviously both players wanted to finish it asap.

The tie break was nerve wrecking. I was so nervous my heart was racing so fast. Maria just about won. If Li's ball hadn't gone out it could have swung the other way.

There was really no loser. Only difference is Maria got to take the trophy home.

I never used to like Li but after losing today's match so graciously (smiling and chatting at the net) I have warmed a little towards her.

It wasn't a great performance, it was one with a lot of up and downs, but in anyway she showed her amazing fight spirit to comeback from a set and 0-4 down and also saved a match point in the third set. So that's why I'm really proud of her, she fought back to get this victory. Great champions know how to win matches even when things aren't so good for them and Maria proved it today again!

I love her smile when she wins a tournament!

Let me just add my congratulations also to Li Na. She was exceptional, mainly not because of the tennis she played (both players had their ups and downs) but because of her sportsmanship behavior. I always liked Li. She is one of the few WTA players that I really like and she always behaves very very beautifully.

Viva Maria, Great win over Li Vamos all the way to the Championships at RG !!!!

The following article of yours is very hard to understand what you mean. The Maria haters in other forums are attaking you for castigating Vika for pulling out and socking up to Serena and praicing her for pulling out. It is a double standard they said, others interpreted the article as if you were going pull out of the final.
It was very hard for us, your fans, to explain what you tried to said in a very contradictory article. English is my fourth language so I was not able to explained it, only on fan did it but he made it worst. Unfortunally Maria you have many Serena fanatics that come in masse every time you lose or win and remind every body that you have not beaten Serena in 8 year.Be carefull what you said about Serena good or bad.

Sharapova sympathizes with Serena

"Maria Sharapova sympathizes with Serena Williams’s decision to pull out of her semifinal in Rome against Li Na as a precautionary measure not to further injure her sore back ahead of Roland Garros.

"It's tough and in terms of Serena playing six matches in matches in eight days and only one day off coming here and its difficult to play and when you have five or six matches because she didn't have a bye," Sharapova told reporters. "It is challenging and so in a week or so with the French Open. I was in her position also here and it’s a tough because you get yourself into that position and you just want to be healthy. You have a additional big event and with the French Open in a week's time then Wimbledon and then the Olympics and then the US Open – like, 4 Grand Slams in a row back to back and not getting scared and just monitoring how you feel and not over do it. Some people can play more and some less." "

WOW. What an intense match. It was a matter of nerve at the end, but we have to give credit to Maria for even giving herself a chance to win it after being down a set and 4-0. Li got nervous, Maria stepped it up and was able to claim yet another title in Rome. I couldn't be happier :D.

Li, gracious as always, played a wonderful tournament. I love her attitude. Ahhh, I'm still freaking out!!!! It was an ugly win, but both players had to battle so many conditions and various other factors, I'm so glad Maria was able to come out on top.

Great tournament :)

This is Maria's most REMARKABLE win in a final EVER !! What a match with poor play at the beginning, her fighting spirit in set two, her concentracion problems in set 3, a helicopter over your head for most of the match, yelling soccer fans in the bach ground, heavy rain, close calls, wet lines and a funny match point !! My head of to Maria , after so many years she still surprises me. A true role model for many people around the world. Tomorrow at work, I will think of her as my role model in life. There are many things I have learned from her over the years, but above all NEVER EVER give up when life is tough !!

Outstanding performance (mentally).

Congratulate both women, Li played the BEST TENNIS i've seen her play since she won the French last year, and Maria well, i seriously don't understand how someone can be that mentally tough and STUBBORN to lose a match! Remarkable!!

I swear, the 5-6 game in the third set was the best thing i've ever seen. So many twists, turns and they seriously brought the best tennis out in each other, even when they couldn't move 2 steps without sliding int the grand stand.

I don't care if it was the most scrappy final in recent year (actually, Cincinatti 2011 comes to mind) but the emotion that ran throughout the match made it definitely the most exciting match of the year.

Maria honing in on Vika now, even though she has a lot of points to defend till the US, i believe she is the true #1 (excluding he-woman of course)

Very intense match in conditions that were extreme and really did not favor Maria at all. I didn't see the TB, but hopefully I have it recorded. Very classy speech by Li, who I've always liked (except when she beats Masha!!). Love Masha's smile when she wins a tournament, it's just radiant and beaming like sunshine. I told my father on his deathbed today that Maria won one for him today, which resulted in as much of a grin as he could muster!! Now rest up Maria, with maybe just a little shopping in Roma and then Paris!! Congrats to Maria and Li, but there was not really a loser today. Ciao everyone.

Go Masha!!! RG here we come!!! I can't wait!!! DAVAI Baby!
Masha is my #1!!

Great to see a lot of ppl appreciate the attractive, gracious Na Li, one of my

favorite players since years, this lovely Chinese. Pity this wasn't soccer so

we could call this a "draw". Intense match, sometimes great tenis then pure battle of wits.

More of that please...

I agree with all of you...it was a great match. Na Li knows how to play Maria and proved that by beating her in the Final in Birmingham a few years ago. Know who was her coach back then? Thomas.

But, you know what I see of all this wonderful success that is now coming Maria's way. Her playing hasn't changed, not really. What has changed and this is, in my opinion, the most crucial thing, is that she now has a Plan B. She goes out on court, plays a few lousy games, gets behind, and Thomas comes on, tells her what she is doing wrong and what she needs to change, then, newly programmed with Plan B, she goes out and starts pulling back the games. This never happened in the past with Michael Joyce. She either won or lost...and usually lost.

So, in my opinion, Thomas is the man behind her success. Without him she would be what she has always been, a pretty dumb tennis player in terms of tactics and game plans.

Your turn Val.

Philli, I simply agree with what you said. Thomas indeed is the reason why Maria has improved so much. One thing that I really admire about Thomas everytime the camera is on him, is how calm he is. No matter the scoreboard, he is just calm, in yesterdays match when Maria was down 4-0 the camera shows Thomas, and he is not even phased by the fact that Li Na was simply destroying Maria. I was like "does this guy even care what happens on this match?". How wrong was I... this is the perfect reaction of a coach, to show that he never panics and he always believes and trusts that his player, with the proper instructions will deliver. Thomas's instructions coupled with Maria's will is indeed a dangerous combination!

I think Maria's decision to work with Thomas was the best decision she made post shoulder injury. Again I agree with you and well said Philli!

EDIT: Here is the final match point between Maria and Li. Such a beautiful thing to watch both Maria and Li laugh and hug after such a crazy match!! Again credit to Li she seems not only a wonderful player but also a wonderful human being!

Fantastic Maria, Congratulations, special victory in Rome, it's very hard to win a title in the same town for two consecutive years!!!

Like I wrote in my previous posts all Italian spectators supported Maria in final, she's the "Regina di Roma" (Queen of Rome).

Great Victory Masha!!!

Hey how about that. My flabber is gasted. But there is one thing that bothers me. I hope Maria learns to think for herself and doesn't become dependent on Thomas sorting out her problems now, because at Slams she is on her own and I hate to think she will develop the Wozi syndrome.
