Maria,

You made me smile the way you show tennis it should be.
Outstanding play! Good job!
Now Kerber again... just play with her.
Look to her if she is a friend and trainings-partner to you.
Just hit the balls and return them wisely 2 or 3 times.
Then when your feeling is high start the attack and try to finish it.

I am sure you will handle it correctly.

Have fun and make me smile again.

She defeated America’s Venus Williams 6-4, 6-3.

WE HAVE TO EXPECT THE FINAL SHARAPOVA VS SERENA WILLIAMS IN ROME !!!!

MASHA&HER COACH SHOULD FIND THE RIGHT STRATEGY TO DEFEAT SERENA WILLIAMS.

Mandatory Minute: Rome, May 18

By Ed McGrogan & Richard Pagliaro - Friday, May 18, 2012

Kerber gritted her way past Kvitova in the first set, and prevailed in three.

Friday's Play (Quarterfinals)

(2) Sharapova d. V. Williams, 6-4, 6-3
Richard Pagliaro's Racquet Reaction

(12) Kerber d. (4) Kvitova, 7-6 (2), 1-6, 6-1

(8) Li d. (14) Cibulkova, 6-1, 7-6 (4)

(9) S. Williams d. Pennetta, 4-0 (retired)

Saturday's Order of Play (Semifinals)

(8) Li v. (9) S. Williams [Centrale]

—6 am EST.

—When she’s on, the reigning Roland Garros champion is one of the few who can match Serena in backhand exchanges. Serena has won five of their six meetings, though that’s somewhat deceptive, as five of the 15 sets they’ve played have been decided in tiebreakers. Li overcame Cibulkova and her nerves to reach her second straight Rome semifinal, and must swing freely and boldly if she’s to beat Serena for the first time in four years. Former Rome champion Serena is the bigger server, a better pressure player, and is riding a 17-match clay-court winning streak as she aims to claim her third consecutive clay title.

The Pick: Williams

(2) Sharapova v. (12) Kerber [Centrale]

—Not before 7:30 am EST.

—Credit Kerber for staying calm and hitting some tremendous running shots in fighting past a wounded Kvitova in a two hour, 14-minute quarterfinal win that’s projected to propel her into the Top 10. Kerber is contesting her sixth semifinal of the season. She beat Sharapova en route to the Paris Indoors title and will try to play some sharp angles to drag her off the court and into running rallies. Sharapova swept power baseliners Ivanovic and Venus in succession, and could be challenged facing different spins from the lefty. But the defending champion has won 20 of her last 23 matches, including the Stuttgart title, has played some of her best tennis on crucial points this week, and the outcome should be on her racquet.

The Pick: Sharapova

You guys gotta read this. A great interview Bleacher Report had with Maria's former coach, Michael Joyce. Some of it surprised me.

Maria beat V.Williams in 2 sets, 6-4 6-3! Well done Maria!

Maria will play against Kerber in SF! Kerber plays so better than other tournaments at past and this shows

Maria will have a tough match against Kerber!

However, I hope that Maria beats Kerber!

I am reasonably optimistic. Kerber's inability to cope with injured Kvitova during the second set yesterday was revealing of mental limitations that I'm sure Maria & Thomas will be all over.

True the finalist is likely to be Serena but I'm not sure of that. A few years ago, Li Na threw matches to Serena in  large tournaments. I became convinced she was paid off. But after winning RG, I don't think Li rolls over for anyone anymore. It depends of how consistent each is today.

Quite right Paul. She has withdrawn due to a lower back injury. Well well well, the old grey mare aint what she used to be. Nonetheless, that doesn't make it any easier for Maria. Na Li has given Maria a few hard times in the past and blown her away. Birmingham stands out as a particularly embarrassing match for Maria. She's not out of the woods yet...one hand on the trophy perhaps...but not both.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. First there is Kerber to deal with. Once she is out of the question, then we talk about Li Na. Li Na I agree is not an easy opponent and to be honest I -like I said in the past- prefer Maria to play against Serena as many times as possible. Even if it means she will lose, every loss brings her closer to finally getting over her problems against Serena, relax and play like she is supposed to play against her.

Contrary to most people here I am NOT glad Serena withdraws.

In any case lets see how Maria is doing today. Good luck to her.

I knew it. Val, I tried to keep my patience with you and be nice but one thing is soooo clear to me. It is beyond your ability as a macho egotistical male to let any 'woman' get in the last word. You have to come back and contradict and add your final say to whatever it is.

And now some info:

Serena Williams has pulled out of her semi-final with Li Na as a precaution due to a back problem. The American had beaten Flavia Pennetta in the last eight after the Italian retired, but has stressed she wants to get herself completely right ahead of the French Open next weekend.

“I had some problems with the lower back earlier week,” said Serena. “It was feeling a little stiff and I don’t think this is the right moment to force things. There is a huge schedule coming up and when a little pain you just want to compensate and I have had a long treatment for the last couple months. I just want to relax and get ready for next few months.

“I feel fine. This is a good week to get better and I'm confident that I'll be 100%. It’s just life and playing a lot and the body is just getting used to playing a lot of matches and that’s all.”

Serena’s withdrawal ends a 17-match winning sequence on clay and she added: “I feel my form is good and hopefully I will be able to do good and stay in form and do well.”

“I'm so sad and sorry I had to pull out of what has become my favourite tournament in Rome,” Serena later said on Twitter. “Everyone has become so nice here in Rome and the tournament director is amazing. I will be here next year for sure.”

An other win , good result and no Serena in the final. What a cowards Serena and Victoria are . Injury , yes right...... I bet you that they will sleep very well in Paris tonight. Let's hope Maria can play some good tennis tomorrow, as Li Na is on the roll. The 2 have a tence relationship because of Thomas. I'll be in front of the tv screen as long as Eurosport brings live coverage.

eh? Why are you ruining this? I actually wanted to show that I value Kerber (Maria actually lost last time against her) as an opponent and in fact I did it because I know you are german and you obviously will support her. So i tried to show respect. You are oversensitive for no reason. I didnt even contradict you... in fact I agreed with you that Li Na is a difficult opponent, seriously. I dont even care if I have the final say, I merely am trying to show that I am willing to start a conversation! And you are ruining it for no reason! Relaaaaaaax... trust me I love and value women...

Anyway, Maria played well, impressive I would say, her 5th final this year in 7 tournaments. She is doing rather well. Lets see if she can repeat this performance tomorrow against Li Na. It will not be easy, but i think she can make it!
