Today we will talk about tennis where the 2012 BNP Paribas Open champions were crowned on Sunday. I’m pleased to say that the decisive match in women’s draw was not held without Russia’s participation, as the triple Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova reached the final stage of the tournament in Indian Wells.
But unfortunately Russian super star failed to get revenge on her Australian Open offender losing yet another final to the unstoppable Belorussian player Viktoria Azarenka.
So Victoria Azarenka along with her Swiss counterpart Roger Federer both were unmatched at the BNP Paribas Open clinching victories in Indian Wells on Sunday.
They each won titles in straight sets enriching their pockets with $1 million prize money.
Federer defeated John Isner of the USA 7-6, 6-3 to earn his fourth title at Indian Wells, avenging a loss to the American who defeated him in a Davis Cup game.
And as I have already said Viktoria Azarenka easily outplayed her Russian archrival Maria Sharapova in two sets 6-2, 6-3. By the way this was the WTA first final between the No. 1 and No. 2 players since 2008.
Azarenka registered an unbelievable 23-0 win loss record this year, the best start to a season since Martina Hingis went 37-0 to open 1997. The top-seeded Belarusian grabbed the season’s fourth title and she remains the sole player who hasn’t suffered any defeat this year.
Since triumphing at the Australian Open in January of this year, Victoria Azarenka proved that this tremendous success was not an accidental one as after that she won all of the matches she took part in during this season.
Sunday’s final featured a rematch of the Australian Open game as again it was Maria Sharapova who intended to break Azarenka’s victorious streak. But the world number one Viktoria Azarenka controlled every segment of the game and took an easy 6-2 6-3 victory leaving the Russian athlete without trophy for the second time in row. The Belorussian national prevailed in their last two meetings.
"She is one of the players who has always had extreme potential to win a grand slam and be No. 1 in the world," Sharapova told reporters after being broken six times by Azarenka in the final at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
"Many people expected that to happen sooner for her and were expecting her to get to a final of a grand slam earlier than she did."
Azarenka reached that first grand slam final in Melbourne in January and made the most of the opportunity by smashing Sharapova 6-3 6-0.
"She's going through a period in her career where she's extremely confident, extremely solid," said the former world number one Maria Sharapova. "Nothing is really going wrong for her. When you're against her, you're playing against a good player and you have to figure out how to beat them. It hasn't happened for me the last couple of times against her."
Sharapova cautioned, though, that much can be changed before the end of this year.
"There is no doubt she's the most dominant as far as this year goes ... just by the level of tennis and how she's been able to keep it as well," the 24-year-old said. "It's also another thing to maintain that level. We've got many more tournaments to go. Ultimately that is set at the end of the year and you kind of see who was where and who did how."
Azarenka, whose other titles this season were earned in Sydney and Doha, plans to withstand the pressure she faces as world number one and continue harvesting trophies at numerous tournaments
"I know it's never going be easy, so every match I take as important as any match, whether it's the final of Australian Open or the first round," Azarenka confessed.
So, this outcome can’t be called satisfactory for the triple Grand Slam title holder Maria Sharapova who cemented her 2nd place in the WTA rankings after the tournament in Indian Wells. Undoubtedly once being on top you’ll never be satisfied with second place. That’ why Maria Sharapova was so upset by her second loss to Azarenka.
But Maria is right, this is only the beginning if the season where three more Grand Slam tournaments will be held. And let’s not forget that the world’s top athletes will also battle for the Olympic crown in London. So hopefully Maria Sharapova will find the way to break Azarenka’s defense and to win the final game against her tenacious Belorussian opponent.
I would like to remind our listeners that former world number one Maria Sharapova has always wanted to win the Olympic tournament, but unfortunately she was forced to miss the 2008 Games in Beijing due to her shoulder injury. By the way the Beijing Olympics saw the dominance of the Russian tennis school, as all three steps of the podium were occupied by the Russia ladies Elena Dementyeva, Dinara Safina and Vera Zvonareva. Hopefully this outstanding result will be repeated in the capital of Great Britain this summer.

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.
