Instead of playing her first match , I think Maria is somewhere hiding in a basement !
Hurricane Maria has gone underground ! Expect no matches to be played on Monday.

Hey folks,

Is there is possibility of a cancellation due to Hurricane Irene?

Not likely. There could be a delay in getting things started--like if there's still water pouring outta Ashe. lol.

The reason they rushed through all the qualie finals this afternoon is that transportation in the City will be problematic. Mayor Bloomberg has ordered the underground subways shut down starting noon on Saturday. Storm surge may flood them. Subways, basements, one doesn't want to shelter underground.

Through to the main draw: MOLODYETS!!!

PANOVA, Alexandra RUS

DIATCHENKO, Vitalia RUS

BYCHKOVA, Ekaterina RUS

VOSKOBOEVA, Galina Russian Kazakhstani

Ahhaaaaaa, floods. I was thinking of falling trees, flying roofs etccc. Wonder were Maria will be then. In the bathroom of her hotel room, in the old apartment of Sasha or watching a musical on Broadway .

7(seven) Russian girls and other "communists" in Vera's corner...and by "random" draw Serena in-between.

THEY JUST HAVE TO DO IT...DAMN!!!

And don't complain about Pova's draw; this is a "red carpet" to the semi's. Operation "charm" goes on!!!

END OF STORY!!!!

They've deployed the Russian qualifiers so their first round meets distract from the perception of the "Russian Quarter".

Top quarter PETKOVIC, Andrea GER [10] vs BYCHKOVA, Ekaterina RUS (Q)

DIATCHENKO, Vitalia RUS (Q) vs ZHENG, Jie CHN

(Winners play each other in 2nd round)

Second quarter VOSKOBOEVA, Galina KAZ (Q) vs SCHIAVONE, Francesca ITA [7]

None in Maria's third quarter

One in Vera's Russian quarter BARTOLI, Marion FRA [8] vs PANOVA, Alexandra RUS (Q)

(Which already contains such goodies as...)

MAKAROVA, Ekaterina RUS vs KIRILENKO, Maria RUS

Agree with you Tiger but we all know Maria's game by now. It all depends on her "serving arm ". Is it in a good mood or is it having a day off !   Yes this GS on other big chance to win but do you remember July ?

Maria is scheduled to play her first round match at around 3 pm on Monday . Let's hope the wind has left NY and that she is not too rusty.

Ps;   Wowww Maria, Adele's 'Someone like you' is a fantastic song . Just saw it for the very first time on Youtube . Great voice and lyrics.   Will play the song daily during the USopen. Good luck the next two weeks . Play your game with confidence and have fun.

Think about this for a moment. Excerpt from Maria's interview: Q. How do you expect to deal with the expected hurricane in the next 24 hours? What are your plans and what are your thoughts about being here for this?
MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, I'm a Florida girl so I'm used to this stuff. (Laughter.)

I think everyone's a bit overreacting about everything, but of course you have to take precaution and all that. But, I mean, where are we gonna go? All hundreds of us?

Well i'm a FLORIDA Girl!!! Really...I thought she was a RUSSIAN girl. See, once again she opens her mouth and says the wrong thing. She should have said... 'Well, I LIVE in Florida so....' It's no wonder that lots of the Russian girls dont like her. She has totally detached herself from the Russian fraternity and doesn't see herself as 'one of them' anymore. I hope she never takes a job in politics, that mouth of hers will get her into trouble everytime she opens it.

...everybody is over-reacting??, No Maria, they are just not as stupid as you.

For her defense one could say it was a lapsus, but then when u take a look at other interviews she says

indeed sometimes really stupid things. I agree on that, Philli. That's what i ment when i talked about

"operation charm". Amerika does everything possible to make Masha an American idol, even in this draw.

For her defense i must say, she RESIST 'cos she's not that stupid on the contrary. And as long as Shamil

sends her PM's in the daylight i'm good.

She's just saying she knows about hurricanes. Hey, in South Texas, Florida, & all points in between, we laugh & point at a frackin' Cat 1, I mean c'mon...

Best hold your fire on this one, Philli. Over the next ten-eleven months, the crux of the matter will be revealed--and the throw-down will be over matters far heavier than throw-away lines.

okay, I'll keep my mouth shut. But, there is a thin line between bravery and stupidity. Sometimes it's hard to see it.

lol... seriously?? Seriously...??

I am at a loss for words...!

In other news concerning US Open and the Hurricane Irene I just noticed this:

Hurricane Irene to Delay US Open Tennis 2011?

Quote:

With Hurricane Irene approaching the US East Coast and expected to batter North Carolina, New Jersey and New York, how will this affect the  tournament slated to open on Monday? Tennis fans fear Hurricane Irene will cause delays at the 2011 US Open what with the rains the weather system is expected to dump in the region in the next three days. And with none of the US Open’s courts protected by a roof, schedules will be greatly affected.

Already, Huricane Irene has caused the cancellation of one US Open event. TheUS Tennis Association (USTA) has canceled Saturday’s Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day at the site of the US Open because of worries about approaching Hurricane Irene. The USTA says that it decided to call off the annual tennis-and-music event to avoid any possible safety issues for our fans and patrons.

Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks and actor Bradley Cooper were among the scheduled participants, along with top-ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic and defending US Open champion Rafael Nadal.

I hope there wont be many problems...and everything goes well!

Oh, yeah. For sure, and don't get me wrong. You're correct to point up those contradictions. They WILL come to a head--during the Olympic year.

If we wanted to argue anecdotal lines, I'd counter with her recent, more serious reference to Chernobyl "and how 25 years later it still haunts my people."

But historical circumstance will soon resolve the matter. Would have in 2008 had she not gotten injured but that would have been a really tough deal. I fancy this coming moment is more appropriate.
