Wow. Hard to appraise this 'cause Katya cratered.  Figure the high-intensity MJMS contest caught up to her.

Nonetheless, Masha played fine. 79% first serve in, 2 aces, 2 DFs, 19 winners, they claimed 16 UEs, but the commentators don't buy that & neither do I.

Some returns were superb, with well-executed construction. :coolyea:

We hope she will play a good tennis until the end of this tournament.

Masha should be ready to defeat opponents of different levels.

Didn't get to watch the match properly but so happy Maria won so easily. When she plays her best she can take on anyone. If only she can be more consistent she would be at the top in no time. Looking forward to Thursday's match. Will be good if she can win in 2 sets again. 3 setters take a lot of out you on clay.  Sasha is so supportive. Makes a change to have someone close watching her matches.

Well done today, Maria.

Ditto.

You watch Bethanie beat Flavia? Not a big fan of either, I was paying little attention until way into the first set, then it grabbed me. Bethanie is the reall deal, isn't she?

Not off court until 01:00 am, dunno how she;ll be to meet Gajdosova about 16:00  but, hey--I hope Bethanie can pull it off!

Hey Paul! I didn't get to watch Bethanie play today. In fact I hardly watched any tennis at all. I have seen her in other matches though. She is quite an impressive player and on a good day can topple a top seed. Is she still wearing her trademark long socks?

Always a pleasure, sir.

Well Maria certainly did get the unexpected simple 2 setter, which is good but in hindsight i wish she was tested a little more, Makarova just seemed to capitulate, but we'll take it, hunh?

Next round should be a slight step up whoever the opponent, so perhaps it'll be a little more competitive

Yup, combined with fluorescent red face paint and luminous yellow headband

She seems to be growing in stature with every tournament, i'd imagine she'll be one of a few the top seeds want to avoid at RG.

You talk about samurai, what Bethanie's coach told her at the tipping point in the first set was pure busihdo. Not quotes, but pretty much: Everything you do is right. When you just rip it, there is none better. Just swing away, Bethanie.

Silly old David Mercer was all, Well, that may be good psychology, but we'll see how yhat works out, eh wot?

I thought, no Not psychobabbleMan meant just what he said. When she misses, it's only by centimeters. No fear, no hesitation and it'll work.

It did.

You could cut the tension in that arena with a knife. Whenever Beth scored, you could hear a pin drop--except when Flavia got cited for audible obscenity, lol. Man, the Italians were pissed! The dark, glowering silence didn't faze Bethanie a bit.

I was seriously impressed.

I agree completely.

Only caught the end of the 2nd and beginning of the 3rd, didn't expect a match that late so i was surprised when i checked the streams!

You expect a certain level of mental fragility considering her previous rankings, something i anticipated would be fully exposed after Flavia took the 2nd, but far from it, a quick break in the 3rd albeit broken back soon after. She exhibited a cool head, no fear and real positive intentions to ATTACK in that heated, partizan arena. The girl really impressed me.

She's a revelation when compared to our current world numero uno.

I think it's her first time she plays Peer after that horrible Fed Cup match in 2008 !! By the way , noticed in the short Facebook film that Maria´s hair has not been coloured recently. It´s getting black ! Will she change haircolour or just too busy to visit a hairdresser .

This does not look good to me. That sort of scheduling suggests an intentional ploy to avoid the cameras.  OTOH, that in itself might say there is no fix in to guarantee a Peer win.
