Well, they lost the final--but runners-up at Wimbly ain't bad and, like singles semi-finalist Putintseva, it brings more of these young Slavic legions to our attention. We know who they are when we shortly see them more in ITF & WTA events.

Irina Khromacheva(RUS) (Adidas) / Elina Svitolina(UKR) (LaCoste)

Putinitseva attracts attention because she appears to have come on strong quite recently. There are several names of Juniors we've noticed over the past few years--but I don't remember hearing of Yulia until the last few months, and here she gets to the Wimbly semis. Need to know more.

Ksenia felt strange having to defeat Panova--they're good friends & room together. But that's the way the ball bounces. [;)]

Anna finally managed to best Pironkova--at Copenhagen 64 61 in 1:20. [H] Lapushchenkova is great at finding the lines (25 winners) but also great at finding the net! (41 UEs). Best when she plays against pace because she hits the ball better when she doesn't have time to think about it. Dunno how far she'll go at Caroline's party, but I still expect good things of her.

Daria Gavrilova (RUS)[1] def. Caroline Price (USA) 62 26 61. Thru to the 3rd round.

Ons Jabeur (TUN) def. Irina Khromacheva (RUS)[3] 63 63. I've no reason to suspect that outcome. Ons is a strong come-upper--a girl with a mission: to bring women's tennis not only to Tunisia but all of the Maghreb. [Y] And she may do it. Yet the scoreline makes me wonder if Khrome were a bit disheartened by the official misconduct she saw in her previous match--a sad commentary on the USO.

Jabeur and her Russian doubles partner moved thru to second round:

Ons Jabeur (TUN)[7]/Yulia Putintseva (RUS)[7] def Miyu Kato (JPN)/Brooke Austin (USA) 76(5) 60.
