It was announced today that I've qualified for the season-ending WTA
Championships. I'm thrilled to be going back to Doha; I've been at the
year-end WTA Championships for the past couple of years and I'm very
happy that I'll be able to compete there for the third year in a row.

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.

Lat night I split attention between Masha & Vesnina on the one hand and Lenochka's match with Kimiko on the other, so perhaps I don't do any of them full justice.

But the best tennis I saw played on Tuesday was by Vera. [:)] [Y]

Eurosport Wednesday will begin with Zvonareva v Kirilenko at 15:00 Beijing (07:00 GMT) 08:00 BST, 09:00 CEST [03:00 EDT US].

^ Yeah,Vera played good quality tennis, solid and confident as well.

I have much simpathy for Kiri, but I dont see her winning ag.Vera,if Vera keeps playing the way she does recently, then Kiri doesnt have a single chance...

Vera: Won my match today against Maria, 6-2 in the third set. It was a battle
but happy to be in the Quarterfinals again this year. Hopefully, I can
keep it going.

After her leg injury, Vera plays her best tennis.

Arguably, Vera & Kiri played the best match of the tournament so far--CERTAINLY the best first set. Even the commentariat agrees, lol! Congrats to both on excellent work! [:D]

An interview with:VERA ZVONAREVA

2010-10-07 11:32

  6 October 2010

  V. ZVONAREVA/M. Kirilenko

  5 7, 6 4, 6 2

  THE INTERPRETER:  Questions, please。

  Q.  This was a very tough game for you.  You lose first set and
came back in the second set and third set was very tough.  Would you
mind assessing the game today that you played?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Well, yeah, I think she started off really well
in the first set, and she was very aggressive and I think I was a
little bit impatient.  Sometimes my shot choices weren't as good as I
wanted in the moment, so I was making a little bit too many unforced
errors in the first set。

I think against such a great player as Maria, if you give her a
little bit of unforced errors, she will take the opportunity, and of
course, you know, I lost the first set, but the second set I was just
trying to keep going for my shots but being a little bit more patient
and still take more chances and be a little bit more aggressive at
times and just fighting for every point.  I was able to turn that
around, I'm very happy。

Then in the third set I felt like it was a little bit physically
tough for her, and I was a little bit more consistent and more
aggressive, so I made it very difficult for her in the third set。

  Q.  I was just wondering what she might have been doing in
particular to begin with that was giving you the trouble.  Was there
any part of her game that you sort of were struggling to come to grips
with?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Well, I think she started off very aggressive
right away, and I was a little bit    couldn't find my rhythm a little
bit.  And then I think throughout the first set I was rushing a little
bit too much, because she started aggressive, and I was making a little
bit of wrong choices of the shots.  I was trying to change the
direction too early sometimes, and that's why I was having those
unforced errors。

And then on the changeover, you know, after the first set I was
just thinking that maybe I should still stay aggressive but maybe a
little bit more patient and change the direction when I have the chance
instead of trying to change it too early and then, you know, having
those unforced errors.  I think that then I was able to turn the match
around。

  Q.  You are now in the last eight in the draw, and many top
players are eliminated now.  What is your expectation?  My second
question is you have qualified to Doha WTA championship, so you have a
good chance to compete year end No. 1.  So do you have a thought of
that?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Well, first of all, it's great to be in the quarterfinal.  I played in the quarterfinal here last year。

Well, I really never look at the draw, so I have no idea who's
still in the draw, who is not.  You know, that's not really important
to me.  I'm just taking it one match at a time, one game at a time, and
I know I will face a tough opponent in the next round.  That's all I'm
thinking about。

Considering Doha, you know, I'm very happy to be again in playing
at the championships for the third time in a row, and, you know, it's
going to be tough challenge.  I'm really not thinking about rankings or
anything else.  I'm concentrate on one match at a time.  I think that's
the most important thing for tennis players.  You cannot think about
all those, you know, statistics or whatever is there.  You have to go
out there and perform your best.  If you're not able to show your best
tennis, you will never be out there.  That's what I'm trying to do
every time.  That's all。

  Q.  You threw your racquet away at the beginning of the third set, and what was in your mind at that moment?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Well, I didn't throw my racquet.  The strings
popped, and I had to make sure that the stringer will restring them,
because I had like four racquets with broken strings throughout the
match, and I just wanted to make sure that if the next one, you know,
breaks I have enough racquets to play with.  That's about it。

So, yeah, my coach had to do a lot of running back and forth to the stringer。

  Q.  A lot of fans are curious about your coach.  You have
mentioned that he's your mixed double partner when you are 10 years old
maybe, and what the chance make him your coach again?  How do you
evaluate your corporation with him now?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Yeah, mixed doubles.  We actually won the Russian
championships in mixed doubles.  It was when I was 16 years old, and I
remember I won the singles, as well, and Chesnokov won the men's
singles.  So that was quite exciting, the championship。

Yeah, Sergey was a good player himself.  He was maybe ranked
around 500, but I think he stopped his career last year, like a year
ago, and he got involved in coaching.  You know, he's a great player
for me, so I asked him to help me out and play with me.  He's a great
sparring partner because, you know, he's much better player than I am.
He will beat me all the time.  He's much stronger and everything。

But I think, you know, he sees the game well, and he tries to
support    he knows what it is to be a tennis player.  You know, he
knows how tough it is to be in those situations, those matches.  I
think, you know, he's just trying to be out there and help me out the
best he can so I can perform my best。

I think it also helps that I have known him for so many years, as
well, because we have, you know, a great relationship off the court,
and of course it brings the best out of us on the court.  As tennis
players we travel so much all the time, and I think the coach spends,
you know, a lot of time with their players.  It is very important to
have good communication like on the court but also off the court。

  Q.  My question is about the coach.  I remember two years ago you
bring another coach to here in China to play at Guangzhou and then
China Open.  That coach was very young, as well, and he actually
coached the kids in Russia.  Usually the tennis player prefer choosing
a coach with lot of experience.  Obviously you chose the young coach.
Would you mind explaining?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Well, when I was in Guangzhou, I think my hitting
partner came with me.  I think at that time I was still working with
another coach.  I was working with Sam Sumyk.  He's a French coach, and
I have been working with him for the past four years.  Yeah, and I
think when I was there in Guangzhou that was my hitting partner who was
there with me。

Yeah, I don't know why    I think, well, Sam has got great
experience, that coach that I worked before with, the French guy.  He's
been on the tour for past, I don't know, 10, 15 years, and I think it
just happen this way。

You know, you don't really choose somebody based on the age.  You
know, you just    if you get along and you think a person can help you,
you know, you try to work together and see how the things go, and if
you understand each other well and you find an understanding and you
believe that your coach is bringing something to you that can give you
the right advice at the right time, that's the most important thing for
the professional tennis player。

Yeah, I think, you know, age doesn't really matter at this point
if you find the person is helpful, you know, and that's the most
important thing.  Experience comes with time, as well。

Great interview, thanx! [H] Sergey sometimes takes off his shirt on the practice court and, y'know he looks like a model (think he may have worked as one at some time). That gets the press, particularly the press women, all hot & bothered. lol! Thus all the interest in her "young" coach.

Pretty cool, hunh? Eurosport typically panders to the powerful Italian tennis community. I don't remember them dumping a top Italian's match before, even if against a Russian. I'm absolutely serious--Francesca has just gotten by in spite of crappy play & Vera has been playing excellently.

Paul wrote: ".... SINA/CCTV ONLY But hey: Eurosport dumping Schiavone? Does this suggest their idea of who is gonna win?" Stick out tongue

LOL! Tell me what'd I SAY, hunh?

What is more than that: Noon, Almost-empty Moon Court shrouded in a cold fog and eerie quiet while Vera blanked Francesca 60 62 in 54 mins (the two games late in the second, Vera GAVE to her. KNOW this because Vera then served to love to wrap the match easily):

1st set at 5-0: LSH stream zapped, go to BoxLive thru fromsport--that one zapped a start of 2nd set, back to a new LimeV thru LSH. 2nd set 3-0: zapped again, but a BoxLive on fromsport has started. Vera breaks to 5-0, ZAP, go to a fromsport VLime...

Check out how someone was systematically discouraging viewing--physical, broadcast or online. Vera continued her excellent, high-level play with zero DFs and only two UEs (those during the 2nd set give-back to show Francesca on the board--when she couldn't find her game with both hands. My take: Schiavone had been burning out during the course of the tournament & everybody involved knew it. But it wasn't seemly for her to just hang it up in a quarterfinal. Thus, a pro-forma match with as little attention as possible. [;)]

2. Li Na vs. Vera Zvonareva (NB 15.00hrs) -- Eurosport, world feed.

ДАВАЙ ВЕРОЧКА!!! Cool I'm curious to see whether the Chinese Russia-fans show for THIS one. lol!

Vera: I played really well today and won 6-0, 6-2 against Schiavone. I am
looking forward to playing Li Na in the Semifinals but I know it is
going to be a tough match.

Paul look her left leg!!!! Vera is not totally healthy but she is doing her best to win each opponent. Vera is a strong girl.

Vera reaches the third place at WTA ranking. EXCELLENT.

[Y] for the 3rd place.

The injury may involve some groin strain from too many slides/splits trying to reach every ball. When I say "too many", I mean that quite a few such attempts are not successful. Better to let some balls go rather than compound injuries. [^o)]

Good news is that it seems she no longer needs the right ankle brace. [:D]

An interview with: VERA ZVONAREVA

2010-10-09 17:32

V. ZVONAREVA/F. Schiavone

6-0/ 6-2

    THE INTERPRETER:  Questions, please.

    Q.  Were you surprised to win this well against the French Open champion?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Definitely it's not the match that you expect
against a Grand Slam winner, but I think I played a very good match
overall.  I started really well, and I was able to keep up with the
level of my game from the first ball to the last ball and never really
gave her a chance to get into the match.

Going in the match, of course I expected a very, very tough
match.  It was difficult.  It was very tough for me on the court,
because I had to keep that concentration even though from the side it
may look like it was an easy match, but there are no easy matches in an
event like this.

So I'm very happy the way I was able to play today and really didn't give her a chance to find her rhythm.

    Q.  Did you feel that you have been building for that kind of
performance?  Is that a performance that's been sort of coming from you?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Well, I think I was improving match by match,
you know, maybe not the perfect match in the first round.  I was able
to improve a bit in the second round and third round, and, you know,
this stage of the tournament I think I really raised the level of my
game.

I know that, you know, the next match is going to be a very
tough one.  You have to play some of your best, you know, tennis to be
able to win in the next match.

    Q.  Have you had a look at your possible opponent?  Obviously there is the local or Sevastova?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  I think it's Li or Sevastova.  That's what my
coach told me.  Yeah, it's  you know, it is going to be tough match
either against Na or against Sevastova.  I played them both before.  We
had difficult ones, so we will see, you know.

I hope they will have a good match, and whoever wins, I will
just have to go back on the court tomorrow and try my best, and then we
will see where it's going to take me.

    Q.  I have a question about what happened toward the end of the
second set, because you won all games, and then it looked like you
would win the next one.  However, Schiavone managed to break your
serve.  What happened during that moment?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Well, she's too good of a player to lose, you
know, 12 games in a row.  Nothing really happened.  I think she stepped
up a little bit.  She took a little bit more risk trying to go a little
bit more for her shots, and, you know, it went well.

So I was just trying to fight for every point.  I knew it's
not  you know, in tennis, the match is not over until you shake the
hands.  So, you know, I was just trying to keep my concentration, and,
you know, keep playing the same way, the way I was playing before.  I
think she took a little bit more risk and used it well.

    Q.  You played very well.  Are you in the mood to take on the new No. 1 and win?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Well, I think I have my match tomorrow against
Li or Sevastova.  That's all I'm thinking about.  I'm not thinking
about anything else.  I have to go there on the court tomorrow and try
my best.

You know, if I play good tennis, I play really well, I play
great tennis, everything else will come, but if I don't go out there,
if go there on the court and don't perform my best, don't beat my
opponent tomorrow, nothing is gonna happen.

I think, for me, I don't really think about any statistics or
anything that's going around.  I'm just trying to focus on my match
tomorrow.

    Q.  When we look at your record against Li Na, it's interesting
because all the matches you have happen on hard court, and the record
is 3 to 3.  Just share some thoughts on Li Na, this player.

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Well, Li Na is a good player, you know.  She
established herself as one of the top players for the past few years,
and we always had tough matches, like you mentioned.

You know, she's a difficult opponent.  She makes you play a lot
of shots.  She's taking her chances, staying aggressive when she needs
to.

You know, it's a difficult one, but it's going to be  if she
wins, it's going to be a new day, a new match for me, and I will try to
think about what happened in the past matches, try to think what worked
well for me.

When I will go on the court I will try to do my best.  We also have to see what's happening with that match.

    Q.  My first question I can ask you about Kremlin Cup.  We have
so many withdrawals this year, so we don't have Dinara, we don't have
Sveta.  Could you please confirm that you will come to Moscow?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  I cannot confirm at the moment.  We will see
what's happening, you know, after the tournament.  You know, so far I'm
in the tournament.  So far I'm  planning to play, and then we will see
what's going to happen.

I think it is very difficult week for players to play.  A lot of
the players that are qualified for the championships is just too close
and it's indoors, different balls, different surface.  It's very
difficult to play both events.  Those players, at the end of the
season, sometimes they maybe choose to take a longer break, especially
if they had injuries and maybe, you know, prepare themselves better for
the next season if they believe they need to take that time off.

So it's tough to say, but, you know, so far I'm in the tournament.  We'll see.

    Q.  Could you please tell us about your job with UNICEF?  Do you
have any problem for the next year?  What are you going to do?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Well, it's not with UNICEF exactly; it's more
with UNESCO.  I'm involved a little bit with gender equality issues.
There are maybe some projects next year and some conferences that I
will attend.

I don't know exactly what's happening on that side yet.  I will
have to  at the end of the season, during the offseason when I will
have more time, we might work on some projects and maybe try to raise
some awareness regarding those issues, and maybe I can participate in
some things next year.

    Q.  Many years ago you have been seen, many times on the court,
you have some mentally collapse; I mean, you cried on the court.
Recently it's getting more rare.  How do you manage to manage your
mental part?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Well, I don't think I have any mental collapses
or anything like this.  It's whatever you see from the side.  I'm an
emotional player, and if I need to let my emotions go, I will do it.
It's just a matter of using it to your advantage.

I don't  if I'm upset about the mistake, I will be upset about
the mistakes.  There is no reasons to hide it.  You know, I am not
happy, because I play with passion, I push myself to the limit, and I
try my best every time I go on the court.

It's just a matter of using it to your advantage.  It's about
knowing yourself.  It comes with experience.  When you know yourself
better, you can use it to your advantage.  You know, if I need to pump
myself up, if I need to break the racquet, you know, to be able to
produce better tennis, I will do it.  I don't care.

If I need to, you know, calm myself down, and say, Hey, it's
okay, don't worry about it, I will do that, as well.  It's about
learning yourself and knowing what you want to do.

    Q.  We know that Caroline become the new world No. 1 yesterday,
and there's a heated debate that a No. 1 without Grand Slam is not the
real No. 1.  What's your view of that comment?  My second question is
between Grand Slam and the world No. 1, which one is more important to
you?

VERA ZVONAREVA:  Well, first of all, I want to congratulate
Caroline on getting to No. 1.  I think it's a great achievement, and
she really played great tennis throughout the year.  She was obviously
the most consistent player on the tour.

It's great for her.  I'm happy she was able to get there, and I
think as a tennis player we play throughout the year  we play on four
different surfaces throughout the year.  The best one who manages to
get the best results on all the surfaces and adjust their games and
play consistent will get to No. 1.

You know, even though she didn't win a Grand Slam, she was the
most consistent one.  She beat a lot of players, and I think she
deserves to be there.  If she keeps showing the great results, she
will, you know, she will probably win a Grand Slam and be No. 1
longer.  If she doesn't play as consistent and show these great
results, she will not stay in the No. 1.

You know, choosing, you know, it's two different things.  You
cannot choose one or the other one.  I think it's the dream of every
tennis player to become No. 1 or to win a Grand Slam, and you cannot
make the choices, but either achievement is a great one.
