Safina and Ivanovic are out of the Miami or Sony Ericson Open. How sad. I hope they'll be back for the better and the best!

They are not known to be friends--but relations among the Russians is something on which you certainly can't trust the Western press. [:P]

Masha has been close to Kirilenko for years, and she and Zvonareva are friends and practice together at large tournaments. Through Fed Cup, Maria became friendly with Chaki & Vesnina.

There appears to be a certain distance between Masha & what you might call the "Moscow clique". Some press flaks have tried to suggest they dislike her, but I think there is at least mutual respect among most of the Russian players. [H]

How on earth is it possible that you are so close to the number 1 spot and "does not fight for it" This are Dinara's own words ??????????

She intended that as severe self-criticism--and it should be. I watched her brother win a match then throw it away, but that's a different deal. Marat is near the end of his career & not highly motivated. Dinara is just getting going. Self-inventory is indicated.

I don't know, but it would seem strange if there weren't some friendships among the Russian & Serbian women. We know that Masha is friends with Novak Djokovic. [H]

Victoria Azarenka says Dinara is a friend. Dementieva is a friend of Azareka (and of Dinara). Since Zvonareva & Azarenka are doubles partners, it's logical to assume they are friends. You could make a whole flow chart of who is friends with who. lol

Tarpischev presently has nine players that he calls on for the Fed Cup team. Far as I know, he's not publicly listed them, but the list was made while Masha's condition was totally unknown, so I doubt it. Dinara obviously is, as she's called frequently.

Lenochka played Moscow, but won't play the next tie. Zvonareva is most likely to play in Italy--all I know so far.

Tip on tracking the girls: You think about it--you don't too often see players together in public apart from functions. The Moscow bunch, especially, are a rather private lot. Look for those you occasionally see dining together.

Miami--what she said: went out there with no motivation. Hey, she is a Safin. lol!

oh thanks again! I guess Dinara was just feeling exhausted and weary during Round 3 at Miami as well as Ana Ivanovic and Vera Zvonareva. The three of them both play at Indian Wells and show a magnificent opening match in Round 2 at Miami. I hope they regenerate their energy for the next tournament! God Bless to Dinara Safina and to other WTA players.

Eurosport - Wed, 01 Apr 14:33:00 2009

Vera Zvonareva and Svetlana Kuznetsova have been named to spearhead the Russia team in their Fed Cup semi-final against Italy.

TENNIS Vera Zvonareva Russia Indian Wells - 0

Alongside world number five Zvonareva (pictured) and Kuznetsova, currently ranked eighth, skipper Shamil Tarpishchev named Nadia Petrova, Anna Chakvetadze, Alisa Kleybanova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Ekaterina Makarova.

Holders Russia will travel to Nova Yardinia to play Italy between April 25-26.

The Czech Republic plays the United States in the other semi-final on home soil in Brno.

Since Shamil didn't name her, I guess not. Probably best--she's working stuff out. Wouldn't want to risk the team. They've got other good clay court players there. [H]

I am confident in Dinara on clay. We should get a better idea at Charleston next week. Odds are good we'll get to see her on live streams. [H]
