Jelena & Elena Wrap Up Doha Field

ST. PETERSBURG, FL, USA - Jelena Jankovic and Elena Dementieva are the last two qualifiers for the season-ending WTA Championships - Doha 2010, the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour announced on Saturday.

"I congratulate Jelena and Elena on qualifying for the WTA Championships," said Stacey Allaster, Chairman and CEO of the WTA. "Both Jelena and Elena consistently perform at the highest level year in and year out, and it's great to see them qualify for what promises to be a terrific finale to the 2010 season."

Jankovic will be playing the WTA Championships for the fourth year in a row. A semifinalist the last two years at the season-ending event, has had a strong season, winning her 12th career title at Indian Wells, reaching the finals of Rome and the semifinals of Roland Garros. She also became the seventh player ever to beat both Williams sisters at the same tournament (doing so at Rome).

"I am really excited to have qualified for the year-end Championships yet again," Jankovic said. "I've played in Doha for the last two years and look forward to going back and competing with the best players in the world."

Dementieva will be playing the WTA Championships for the 10th time in her career. A semifinalist in 2000 and 2008, she has also had a strong season, winning her 15th and 16th career titles at Sydney and Paris [Indoors], reaching finals at Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo and also the semifinals of Roland Garros.

Caroline Wozniacki, Vera Zvonareva, Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, Samantha Stosur and Francesca Schiavone were the first six to make the elite eight field.

The doubles field was also wrapped up this week, with Gisela Dulko & Flavia Pennetta, Kveta Peschke & Katarina Srebotnik, Lisa Raymond & Rennae Stubbs and Vania King & Yaroslava Shvedova all in the mix.

  • Sure sure. But what can be cold on the outside can be very hot on the inside.

I hear that. [Y] Practice in the chilly gloom of Sokolniki Park produces as many champions as the resorts of the Med or Florida. [;)]

JJ apparently won't play until Thursday--no doubt on Center Court, thus also giving us a viewing opportunity re her opponent, the young Prague-trained Kazakh qualifier Zarina Diyas, who defeated Dulko in a three set ordeal.

Jelena Jankovic: “ I couldn’t concentrated on the game”

“I have been sick since I came from Beijing, -told she to press.
–I have been on antibiotics for a week or so and unfortunately I wasn’t
ready to play at my level. I was suffering on the court, but I really
wanted to be out there and didn’t want to retire. I finished as well as
I could but obviously it was tough for me to focus on my tennis – I had
a hard time breathing and I was getting tired quickly and didn’t have
    much energy…”

“I will see the doctor now and see what I can do.
It’s though, it’s the end of the year and my body is exhausted. It’s
been a long season with a lot of brakes   and it’s not easy to recover
and feel good…. I really need to have energy and be able to smile on
the court and enjoy the game. I will stay optimistic and hope things
    will be better in Doha.”
“Doha is a different type of tournament
because you can lose a match and still win the whole tournament. So
anything can happen, but for me the biggest concern is being healthy.”

    Kremlin Cup press-center

this is really a shocking one!

    just this question: what happened???!

but victory to Zarina! that 17 y/o is truly great! :)) clap clap!

As you have already written about, Jelena is better than Ana in many things!!! :D After all,she FIGHT for Serbia, while ANA resting and drinking a coffee....I think that this is a matter of behavior. As second,JELENA is a humanist, always helps everyone!!!She is now in a worse form, needs to go for eye surgery, she is seek too...:( The best of all is that she qualified for the final tournament in Doha!I wish all the best for Maria,to make she look next year in Doha.Good luck!! :) :*

Well, that had to happen. The 17-year-old, 268th ranked qualifier wasn't going all the way--THIS time. Making the quarterfinal elated Zarina, her family, and all Kazakhstanis in Moscow & everywhere. So, if JJ in fact tanked, she did it in a good way. [;)]
