...I was just wondering would Steffi be such a legend if she was playing today's players back then?


I mean, could Steffi in her prime win Serena in her prime? Or Justine Henin? 


I think not.... I think she would suffer...


P.S. I don't mean to be disrespectful - i hope i didn't piss anyone off...

i was asking myself same question about others great champions...i don`t know exactly,but on 16 september,martina navratilova and monica seles was in romania and monica has said that if she was to play on this days for sure that things would be a lot different[*-)]

my personal oppinion is that women tennis these days is beyond the fizical and pshical limits and is much more harder to be top of the world,they are so many good players...but graff,seles,sabatini remain great champions...but even so i think that,concerning  steffie graf she will not have so much victories at high level if is about to play these days

It depends on the surface - no question,Steffi would beat Serena on clay,but on grass and clay it would sure be a good battle. But I don't think Henin or Serena are more talented than Graf...

Steffi wouldn't make the cut these days with all due respect. Sometimes I see glimpses of old matches and the first thing you notice is how slow the pace is on the balls. I don't think she'd make the top 10 now. 10 years ago in women's tennis is like going back to ancient times. A LOT has changed. For the better.

It would be a great battle on clay, but on grass?? I don't think so....Serena has maybe the best serve in women's tennis and the serve is half the job when the surface is grass....

No I'd definitely disagree with that...Graf now at 39 or whatever would still beat most of the women's players on the tour...

I agree with some of what you said midaso, I think she could beat alot of the women players on the tour if she were playing today. I mean Martina Navratilova was way past 40 when she beat a couple of girls on the tour a couple years ago and she even pushed hantuchova to 3 sets at wimbledon. But If Graff were playing today in her prime there is no way she would be as dominant as she was. In fact if Monica Seles would have never gotten stabbed, Graff wouldn't have won as many slams as she did because at that time Seles was dominating the tour.

Steffi is, and will always be remembered as one of the Great Players of tennis. But tennis, like any other sport has gone through changes over the years.


After Steffi, came Martina Hingis and she dominated the game with her technical wizardry for many years....Then the game changed and the Power girls came along...The Williams Sisters and Davenport, etc.... Martina was out gunned by them.


The game has become a lot faster, the younger players are much more athletic than before.....and in this point, Maria is lagging behind.  Sure, she has a good serve...when it works, but she is Tooooo slow to match the new youngsters.  The times they are a changing.

The pace of the balls  was slower because Steffi used the slice a lot!!!  Especially the backhand slice....maybe her greatest shot...very precise for a slice shot...and i think it was tactics against certain opponents as well..
