With all the talk about coaching issues, I'm a little surprised that when Vesnina beat Masha, no one mentioned EV's new guy--Alexey Ageev, who came to our attention when he brought out that strange, pale ITF girl Lapushchenkova onto the Tour. Y'know, this guy does have a bit of magic going on. [H]

Vesnina & Wicky fought it out. 62 57 (Ves blew 3 or 4 match points in the 2nd) Up a break 53 in the 3rd. CAN SHE CLOSE THIS TIME? YES! Vesnina 62 57 64 in 2:38... in spite of TEN DFs. geez... but :ok:


Will next play Anabel Medina Garrigues. EV can win that match & get to Round of 16.

As expected, Princess took the Charleston final 62 63 in 1:35. Excellent viewing on ESPN2 HD. Elena & Sergey Vesnin need to address two things. 1) Why so many long balls? I'm not immediately making out what's up with that.  2) There are times she doesn't move when she should--just stands there & looks at it.  Good doubles player as she is, I know she's not slow on comprehension or reaction.


Speaking of which, there was some commentarial "wisdom" she was fatigued from playing singles & doubles. Weeelll...  not so much. A couple of hours later, Vesnina and Mirza def Mattek-Sands & Shaughnessy 64 64 in 1:30 to take the Charleston Doubles Championship. 


I'd wondered about the pace, myself, earlier in the week, but it appears she can handle it.

I think she was amazing in Charleston...after a week playing singles and double matches, she was a kind tired, but play way against Caroline!

This year the first title will coming!!

Yeah, I too expect that. FYI: Some commentary is saying lately that Elena is a "doubles player who turned to singles" -- suggesting that's in imitation of Stosur.  That's not true. Vesnina has never been a doubles specialist. At the same time that her singles career didn't progress fast as she'd have wanted in 2007, her doubles aptitude emerged unexpectedly at Fed Cup. She stepped up alongside Petrova at Stowe, VT and defeated Venus Williams & Lisa Raymond in a deciding fifth rubber to save the tie for Russia on American soil. Russia went on to take the Cup that year. Raymond freely admitted it was Elena who had shocked them.


Since then, she's won several doubles titles with various partners. (She even played with Masha one time.) But she never stopped contending in singles--just Western broadcast has avoided letting the cameras get on her. Now it appears her delayed singles development is moving ahead nicely. I hope to see her come up strong.


She's a life-long resident of Sochi. While tennis is not a winter sport, the city is a developing tennis center and the tennis players have been major boosters of the Sochi Winter Games in 2014. Expect to see her promotional profile rise as well.
