Worth noting: first round at Miami:

E Makarova (RUS) d [Q] C Dellacqua (AUS) 63 75

We're told that Dellacqua is a serious contender and, coming thru qualification, should have been match-hardened.

Quietly, Katya Makarova continues to improve. [H]

Anna Lapuschchenkova (did I spell her last name right?) is doing pretty well in Stuttgart. I don't know her much. But she won against Azarenka 6-3 6-3 (Stuttgart R2).

Sorry for Vika but hey! Now we can get a look at this girl. She's one of those they've been hiding away from the cameras. Making the quarters, now they'll have to show her. [8-|]

I spelled her last name wrong. It must be LapuSHchenkova. Sorry for that.

Well, well. Outta the shadows of Russian ITF comes Anna Lapushchenkova--beats Vika, beats Lucie, will play Sam in the semis!

I mean "shadows" literally--the girl is pale as a vampire! Must work largely indoors in Russia & Belarus. However, she did qualify at Melbourne & Barcelona. She's not a teen--23 yrs old. Here's what WTA has:

I tellya: if she hadn't gotten nervy (at the new status & venue, I'm sure) she would've added Sam's scalp to her belt today, no question! The crowd got behind Anna from the outset and continued to applaud as she left the court. Tarpischev should be on the phone soon. Figure what would've happened if he'd brought Anna L to Birmingham! [;)]

(The "man in black" coaching her is Alexei Ageev.)

The German on-court reporter said she was the talk of the tournament. Notice how that perception is NOT shared by WTA. [;)] They hate this sort of thing--not just another Russian, but that such an appearance may give fans a clue that there is far more to world tennis than seen in the Tour's orbit.)  Details at Wikipedia:

Thanks for the update Paul. I haven't watched her play against Sam. But even though she lost, she still got a great run in Stuttgart. She beats Vika and Lucie. A win is a win. I hope she'll continue to play good. Now, more people are noticing her. Davai Anna! [:D] By the way, is she going to play in Rome?

Not Rome. Playing the semis at Stuttgart would have kept her from the Rome qualification rounds anyway. Madrid, I don't know--can't find qualification list from there yet.

Unfortunately not. [:(] She got knocked out by a Chinese player I haven't heard of, Han Xinyun. Too bad--I wanted to see her again soon. Maybe on grass. OR, there ARE getting more of the ITF events on stream...

Ekaterina Ivanova: I don't think I've seen her play. 22 year old ITF player. Has played some WTA Tour events from 2007. http://www.sonyericssonw...ina-ivanova_2257889_9985

She didn't get thru AO qualifying but apparently has at RG. [H]

I haven't seen the final lists but I think Ekaterina, Anastasia Pivovarova, and Ksenia Pervak have made it through to the main draw.

While there is not yet a proper schedule, the networks like to carry Dominika's matches, so there may be a chance of broadcast/stream. [8-|]
