Russians reach WTA quaterfinals in Brisbane, Auckland


Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Maria Kirilenko of Russia have qualified into the quarterfinals of two Women’s Tennis Association tournaments - in Australia and New Zealand, with the prize fund of $220,000. Pavlyuchenko beat Roberta Vinci of Italy in Brisbane, while Kirilenko outplayed Kaia Kanepi of Estonia in Auckland.

I watched 'em both. Pe'er defeated Kiri 60 36 61. As you can see from the score, Kiri only got her power game going in the second set, but couldn't hold it. Reason: She was visibly contending with a tendonitis flare below her left knee--replacing the band, rubbing a solution on it during changeover, etc.


Interesting bit: Aussie commentator mentioned that Kiri is a good friend of Kafelnikov--said she trained with Yevgeny in Russia during December. [:)]


Ivanovic beat Nastya 62 76(6). Actually, Pavlyuchenkova did not get her serve on until midway the second set, and almost took the tie-break. Dunno why the slow start. But most interesting was to note that Ana still freaks out & starts to melt down when confronted by the unexpected. If Nastya had hit her just a bit earlier, the outcome would have been different.

You misunderstand, Nella. The crowd, which had been subdued through most of the match, in the third set shifted toward support of the perceived underdog. Upon the win, they began to celebrate & cheer Kiri. THAT is what she was shushing--she indicated to them she did not want a big celebration--which they respected. [H]
