gt1 is right. Several of us have rooted for Vera for a while, and she does need her own thread. So it's only appropriate to start it out with her Indian Wells sweep of both singles & doubles. Also because she will be number 5 tomorrow. (And partner Azarenka number 10.) [H]

Congrats to Vera for the doubles AND singles win at Indian Wells, what an amazing achievement. [Y]  I am liking Vera a little bit more each day, and now I would consider myself a little fan of her.  Oh and the trophy is nice but I really liked the whale. [:(]

Zašto ne? I tebi veliki pozdrav. Zbilja se nadam da će Masha brzo na teren. Još uvijek ne mogu vjerovati da je nisam gledala od onog nesretnog Wimbledon-skog meča s Allom:S

From sportbox.ru:

Zvonareva may pass three months before return

The recuperation of Vera Zvonareva after the injury of her ankle, sustained at the tournament in Charleston, can take up to three months.

"Bad fall on court led to torn ligaments," said Zvonareva to the official site of the Russian tennis federation. "As far as the period of recuperation is concerned, specialists give different estimations. Some speak about two weeks, others - almost twelve. In such cases everything occurs differently, individually. I will thus undergo different procedures in Moscow - to fly somewhere is still far too dangerous."

Let us recall that Zvonareva suffered injury in the match with the Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano. The Russian woman will almost certainly pass on the semi-final match of the goblet of the federation with the command of Italy, April 25 to 26.

April 22, 2009, 20:17

From Vera's excellent upgraded site: [H] http://www.zvonareva.ru/  (Russian, English & Chinese.)

Hello everybody!

I am lying in bed in my hotel in Amsterdam. I had an ankle surgery. All seem to be fine; no pain in my leg so far but certainly there is some inconvenience.

The surgery was done in one of Rotterdam’s clinics, so on Thursday I had to move to Amsterdam but I was picked up and transported by the car. At present I walk on crutches. The operation was performed by a reputed surgeon Nick Van D-yke who operated on many football players and now helps Cristiano Ronaldo. It turned out that I flew in on Monday and he was able to schedule the operation for Wednesday. The decision wasn’t an easy one. After the Final Championship I came back to Moscow and got in touch with many famous specialists and my physiotherapist Jean-Pierre recommended Nick though I intended to fly to the US and booked a ticket but then I changed my decision. I hope that by Australian Open I’ll be on-stream.

Thinking back, the SE Championships turned out just crazy; on the one hand I was happy that I managed to perform, on the other however I wanted to take care of my health. My only match turned out to be a crazy one: in the beginning I was loosing in all respects but then I recollected myself and managed to impose struggle. In addition Caroline started having problems, so it turned out to be not a match but a complete torture…

Therefore for me it seems to be a new stage and a new start. I will try to take with me only the best from the past season – a semifinal in Australia, a win in Indiana, and to think away the rest. Since now I will try to walk onto a court only when I am completely recovered.
I plan to stay in Amsterdam for two weeks, if I like it all here, I will work with physiatrist Leo Echteld from  "Fysiomed" (photo).
I was hoping to go on holidays somewhere this year at last. After Moscow Olympic Games in 1980 my mom received a tourist voucher to visit Cuba and she liked it a lot; for a long time she keeps suggesting for me to go there on holidays but it doesn't seem to be my fate again... Nevertheless Amsterdam is not the worst place either, though it’s a bit cold here :))

After this I am going to Florida where I will get busy with physical training to start with. Besides I am going to meet with my coach Sam to discuss our further plans. Lately he wasn’t accompanying me due to some personal circumstances and my traumas prevented from normal work as well. I hope to continue our cooperation.

Also, as you noticed, a new version of my site has been opened. There are three new sections about UNESCO, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Rett Syndrome. Please leave your comments  :))

See you soon!!
Vera

ST. PETERSBURG, FL, USA - Tennis isn't the only sport Vera Zvonareva has been enjoying lately. Last Monday, December 7, the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's No.9-ranked player was invited to watch Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals play the Tampa Bay Lightning at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Zvonareva attended the game sitting center ice, then spent some time visiting with Ovechkin and fellow Russian players from the Capitals, Alexander Semin and Semyon Varlamov.

"I am a huge hockey fan and sometimes when I'm home in Moscow, I'll go and see a game," Zvonareva said about the experience. "I hadn't been to an NHL game in quite a long time so this was a nice treat. I hadn't met Alex before as well, so it was cool getting to chat with a fellow Russian athlete. We had a good time and I will have to get him to a tennis match in the future!"

Vera Zvonareva: 'Forgot to mention that I had the chance to go see Alex Ovechkin, a fellow Russian, play against the Tampa Bay Lighting last Monday. Alex was able to get me great seats at center ice and we were able to hang out after the game and talk. I also meet two other Russian players from the Capitals, Alexander Semin and Semyon Varlamov. It was a lot of fun and I am a huge fan of hockey.'

Picture of Alex&Vera after the ice hockey match. Alex looks tired after the match. He had also sweaty hair.
