SEMI-FINAL today ???

Elena Vesnina kept her chances of qualifying for the semifinals alive at the Garanti Koza WTA Tournament Of Champions, beating Tsvetana Pironkova to improve to 1-1 her group.

Watch highlights and interviews from Sofia all week right here on wtatennis.com!

Curiously, the two had never played each other before, despite years on the tour together - one could tell in the first two sets of the match, with neither player really settling into any consistent momentum.

Vesnina was the steadier of the two early on, going up a set and a break, 62 32, seemingly on the way to a straight set victory. But Pironkova began hitting the mark on her backhand and clawed her way back into it, winning four of the next five games to sneak out the 51-minute second set, 6-4.

Vesnina steadied herself again from there, though, winning 15 of the first 18 points of the third set and eventually taking the set at love for a 62 46 60 victory. The No.5-seeded Russian finished off the two-hour, 13-minute battle with a massive forehand winner the No.8-seeded Bulgarian couldn't retrieve.

"Today I felt in the tough moments the crowd was really behind Tsvetana, they were really trying to cheer for her," Vesnina said. "For me, I knew I just had to not think about that. I knew I just had to focus on myself, on my game, on my game plan - and it was a pleasure to play this match today."

Group Sredets now has Ana Ivanovic at 2-0, Sam Stosur at 1-1, Vesnina at 1-1 and Pironkova at 0-2.

Friday's wave of round robin matches will determine who moves through to the semifinals, with Ivanovic taking on Vesnina and Stosur taking on Pironkova. Ivanovic and Vesnina are up first.

"I'm so happy I can still make the semifinals," Vesnina said. "It's going to be a great experience for me to play against Ana tomorrow. She's a great player and a great person, and I'm going to go out there and try to win this match. I'm just happy I was able to qualify for this tournament, so to qualify for the semifinals would be amazing. I'm just enjoying my time here and I'll try to do my best tomorrow."

PAVLY PLAYS THE SEMI-FINAL AT SOFIA (vs.MAD SAM)...DAVAI !!!

The No.6-seeded Pavlyuchenkova beat the No.7-seeded Cornet in an hour and 13 minutes, 62 62.

"I knew there was no choice today but to play really aggressive, consistent tennis," Pavlyuchenkova said. "At the start of the second set she started playing better - she was more relaxed, which is normal. I knew it would get tougher like that and that I had to increase my level, so I focused hard and played more aggressive from there. I'm happy it worked out. I'm very pleased with my performance."

"I didn't play so well today, and Anastasia played well," Cornet said. "She was way more aggressive than me - I was only running, and I couldn't really put myself into the match at any time. Maybe at the beginning of the second set, but it wasn't enough. I'm disappointed the way I finished the tournament.

"I'm sad the tournament is over. I would have loved to be in the semifinals. But she deserves it."

Pavlyuchenkova, a former World No.13, is now 4-0 lifetime against Cornet, a former World No.11.

"I don't really know why I have a good record against her," Pavlyuchenkova said. "Maybe every time we play it's an important match, so I always play like it's the last match - like today, I knew I had to raise my level because it was a really important match, and I'm happy it worked out for me again."

The Russian clinched second place in Group Serdika with the victory, meaning she will move through to the semifinals. First place in the group went to Simona Halep, who went 3-0 in the round robin stage.

"That was my goal coming here, to get out of the group," Pavlyuchenkova said. "When I lost my first match I wasn't sure if my goal was still possible, but now it has happened, so I'm really happy.

"I'm just going to enjoy the semifinals and try my best to go through to the finals."

Though the head-to-head swings heavily in Pavlyuchenkova's favor, Pavlyuchenkova and Cornet couldn't be closer on the rankings - Pavlyuchenkova is No.26, Cornet No.27. They are also separated by just 100 points on their ranking points total - the Russian has 1890 points, the Frenchwoman 1790.

Simona Halep wrapped up an absolute breakthrough season by winning the Garanti Koza WTA Tournament Of Champions, battling back from a set down to beat Sam Stosur in the final.

Watch highlights and interviews from Sofia all week right here on wtatennis.com!

A day after pulling off a Houdini-like escape against No.2 seed Ana Ivanovic in the semifinals - she was down a set, and 3-0 down in the third set - the No.1-seeded Halep scored another come-from-behind victory against No.4 seed Stosur in the final, looking completely out of it in a 31-minute first set but rebounding very nicely in the next two sets to beat the Australian to the season-ending title, 26 62 62.

Halep won 20 of the last 26 points of the match, finishing it off on a forehand down the line winner.

"I really wanted to win this tournament, so I'm just happy!" Halep said in her on-court interview after the match. "It has been a great tournament for me. And well done to you Sam, you played well all week."

Throughout the week Halep was urged on by crowds of supporters from neighboring Romania - and they were among the many people the Romanian No.1, who will now be No.11 in the world, thanked.

"I want to thank everyone who came to support me this week, they helped me a lot," she said. "I also want to thank my team, my friends and my family, and of course Ilie Nastase who came to support me!"

Nastase, a fellow Romanian who was the ATP World Tour's first World No.1 back in the early 1970s, was also interviewed after the final. "This is my first time here after 51 years - I was 16 the last time I came here!" he said. "To finish the year with a win like this is great for Simona. It will give her confidence going into the new year, which begins pretty soon in Australia. Congratulations to her."

Another Romanian tennis legend has been at the Armeets Arena all week - Virginia Ruzici, the only Romanian woman ever to win a Grand Slam title, manages her now (read more about that here).

As for Halep, as recently as May she was just another young player trying to break through - a former junior No.1, a three-time finalist on the WTA. Now, less than half a year later, she has six WTA titles - Nürnberg, 's-Hertogenbosch, Budapest, New Haven, Moscow and now Sofia - and she is on the verge of becoming the third Romanian ever to break the Top 10 on the WTA (after Ruzici and Irina Spirlea).

What's next for the 22-year-old? "I want to enjoy this moment and then take some holidays, and just relax," she said. "Hopefully I can play next year like I played this year and do well in Australia."

Though she didn't come away with the title, Stosur has a lot to be happy about. After nearly falling out of the Top 20 a month ago - she actually fell to exactly No.20 in the world for two weeks - the former World No.4 has rebounded nicely, winning 12 of her last 15 matches, a stretch that includes winning the Osaka title and reaching finals at Moscow and now Sofia (falling to Halep both times).

"Congrats to Simona on playing a great final," Stosur said. "She's a very good player - she got me a couple weeks ago in Moscow, and again it was very hard today - but I'm happy with the week I had.

"Now I'll take a break and then think about next season in a few weeks when I start training again."

ANNA CHAKVETADZE...

With her countrywomen marching forward alongside her, Anna Chakvetadze was one of the brightest new stars of women's tennis in the mid-to-late 2000s, going as high as No.5 in 2007 - but from that peak she suffered setback after setback, and this year she decided to march no more.

But let's rewind back to the beginning first - and what a beginning it was. For many the road to the top is step by step, but Chakvetadze burst into the limelight with one huge leap as a No.175-ranked qualifier at the 2004 US Open, stunning then-World No.3 Anastasia Myskina in the second round. It was the 17-year-old Chakvetadze's third WTA main draw match - only three players have scored Top 10 wins faster than the Russian (Andrea Leand, Julie Coin and Garbiñe Muguruza in their second).

Chakvetadze would finish 2004 at No.84, 2005 at No.33 and - shortly after a 10-match fall win streak that brought her the first two WTA titles of her career at Guangzhou and Moscow - 2006 at No.13.

The Russian hit the biggest of big times in 2007. Four titles - Hobart, 's-Hertogenbosch, Cincinnati and Stanford. Three trips to the business end of Grand Slams - the quarterfinals of the Australian and French Opens and the semifinals of the US Open. Two more Top 3 wins - both against a No.3-ranked Jelena Jankovic, in the 's-Hertogenbosch final and in the round robin of the WTA Championships.

And then, of course, her own career-high ranking of No.5, which she achieved after that semifinal run in New York - one of only 66 women in the 38-year-old history of WTA Rankings to reach the Top 5.

But the setbacks started coming at her as quickly as her rise - first the tragic home invasion during the 2007 off-season that clearly took a toll on her psychologically, then an inner ear infection that took her out most of 2011, and then chronic back problems that plagued her throughout the 2012 season.

On September 24, 2013, about a year after playing her last event at Tashkent in September 2012 - she had to retire during the doubles final due to her back - Chakvetadze retired from professional tennis.

"I have a chronic back injury, so I made the decision to stop and start a new life," Chakvetadze told Russia's Sport Express Daily. "Of course, this was a difficult decision to make. I thought hard about it but now it's finally made. I understood that the point of making a return to tennis was behind me.

"I no longer see myself in professional tennis so I am ready to say that my career is over.

The classy Chakvetadze was one of only eight Russian women ever to break the Top 5 in the WTA Rankings, joining former No.1s Maria Sharapova and Dinara Safina, former No.2s Anastasia Myskina, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva and former No.3s Nadia Petrova and Elena Dementieva.
