After all those great performances in the last year i think KIRSTEN FLIPKENS (nicknamed FLIPPER:)

deserved her own thread.  FLIPPER won't be in the next important tourney at Stanford due to an injury.

N°15 in the actual rankings i hope she can show still many more things at the US OPEN...SWIM FLIPPER,

More than happy here !! As Flipper got stronger and more accurate, Williams got looser and more

disinterested. I predicted she would get that last break on Flipper. She put everything into it.

At that point, to her, it was all about bragging rights. Flipper subsequently broke her back.

But Williams didn't care; she knew she was defeated. It's too bad Flipper hadn't had more court time

in preparation for Rogers Cup. Her doubles results with Genie could have been better. Before last weeks'

final at Citi, Genie had won thirteen (13) straight matches with Townsend. Who knows what Genie and

Flipper could have done with a match under their belt. They almost did it! They are both on an upward

curve and could do well together in in the future.

Are you torn on this one, Tiger? ELENA vs FLIPPER?

I would like to see FLIPPER win so she can pummel Williams in the second round,

who, of course, gets a qualifier in the first. Keep trying, our favourites will

beat you anyway!!

NO, couldn't use her best weapons due to a strong wind. So no slices or dropshots and Venus

served very well. Only in the second we saw the real Flipper;maybe if she had won that 5th game ???

GREAT FIGHT though; 61 62 don't reflect the image of the match...

VENUS GETS REVENGE ON FLIPKENS

NEW YORK, NY, USA - A few weeks ago in Toronto, Venus Williams won the first set on Kirsten Flipkens at love but ended up falling in three sets - she had no such collapse against her this time.

Much like in the aforementioned 06 64 62 loss north of the border, Williams came out firing - in roughly half an hour she was up 61 20. Flipkens put up some serious resistance at that moment, catching up to 2-all and taking Williams to six deuces in the next game, but Williams got the control back just in time, sneaking that game out then running away with it against the No.12-seeded Belgian, 61 62.

"In Toronto I started out really strong and it didn't end up as well as I would have liked," Williams said. "But my serve was a lot better today. In Toronto I wasn't really feeling that great about my serve. Honestly, I think that made a huge difference. I think I was serving in the 40 percentages in all of my matches this summer, so it was very challenging - but you can only go up. I've worked on it a lot.

"I just kind of held on to that second set. She played some competitive games and dug out some points you kind of think are going to go your way - that shows why she's been playing so well this year."

HERCOG FLIPS THE SCRIPT ON FLIPKENS !!!!

With some spectacular serving - she had a 76% first serve percentage and won 86% of those points, and only lost six points in eight service games - Hercog totally dominated Flipkens, even breaking her twice per set en route to a 54-minute, 63 61 victory in front of a shocked center court crowd. "My first serve percentage was high and I was moving well, and I really tried to push my game into hers, and not let her play her game," Hercog said. "I've known her for quite a few years and we have practiced together quite a few times, so I knew her game, but I really just tried to focus on myself and not think about playing the top seed and defending champion - it's just too much extra pressure. "Of course, everyone wants to beat the top seed and defending champion, so I'm really happy." Flipkens was only complimentary towards Hercog afterwards in her post-match press conference. "I actually felt quite okay on the court today - it's just Polona was playing the match of her life, and all I can say is congratulations," Flipkens said. "I've had a great year and I'm really enjoying what I love to do, which is playing tennis, and I've really taken a step forward. You have ups and downs sometimes, but it wasn't me who played badly today, I just have to give all credit to her for playing so well." It was a little bit of reverse déjà vu for Flipkens, too. "It's like last year here when I played the top seed in the first round, Dominika Cibulkova, and I played the best tennis of my life," Flipkens added. Hercog's win over the World No.14 was the second-best win of her career, after then-No.7 Marion Bartoli at 2012 Charleston. She has five Top 20 wins overall, the others coming at 2011 Rome (No.15 Andrea Petkovic), 2012 Beijing (No.20 Ekaterina Makarova) and 2013 Cincinnati (No.19 Cibulkova). The only other seed in action during the day session was No.3 seed Lucie Safarova, who slammed down eight aces en route to a one-hour, 13-minute straight set victory against Anna Tatishvili, 63 62. Other winners during the day session were Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, Mirjana Lucic-Baroni and qualifiers Sesil Karatantcheva and Julie Coin. Zahlavova Strycova won this tournament two years ago. Three more matches took place at night, with No.2 seed Kristina Mladenovic blasting 12 aces to beat American qualifier Melanie Oudin, 76(5) 57 62; No.4 seed Bethanie Mattek-Sands beating Canadian wildcard Stéphanie Dubois, 63 64; and No.7 seed Lauren Davis beating Camila Giorgi, 67(5) 63 62. -
