Maria & Vika Eye Up Wimbledon SF Date

Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka have once again been drawn in the same half, while Serena Williams has a tricky start to her title defense.

Maria & Vika Eye Up Wimbledon SF Date

Fresh from a near-flawless triumph at the French Open and riding high on a 31-match win-streak, Serena Williams arrives in south-west London to defend her Wimbledon crown in buoyant mood.

If she is to lift the famous Venus Rosewater dish for a sixth time, though, she will have to do it the hard way, after Friday's draw placed a couple of potentially tricky hurdles in her path, in the shape of Zheng Jie and Sabine Lisicki.

Should Williams and Zheng negotiate their respective first round assignments, against Mandy Minella and Caroline Garcia, the pair will get the chance to reprise their classic from last year's tournament. On that occasion, after two and a half hours on court, Williams, with a little help from a tournament-record 23 aces, finally subdued an inspired Zheng, 9-7 in the third set.

Former semifinalist Lisicki could lie in wait after that in the fourth round. The German is one of the few players on tour with a serve to rival Williams' and her big forehand and attacking instincts make her a real danger on the grass.

Also in the top half are Angelique Kerber, Li Na and Williams' victim in last year's final, A.Radwanska. Like last year, Radwanska goes into the tournament short of match practice, having lost early in Eastbourne. The Pole opens up against Yvonne Meurburger and could meet Madison Keys, Heather Watson or Mona Barthel in the third round.

After her domination of the tennis headlines throughout the first few months of the year, No.2 seed Victoria Azarenka has crept under the radar somewhat coming into The Championships. With one of the most rounded games on tour, the Belarusian is comfortable on grass, and after making the semifinals on her past two visits will be eager to make it through to the second Saturday this time around.

Azarenka kicks off her campaign against Maria Jao Koehler and is seeded to meet Jelena Jankovic in the fourth round and 2011 champion Petra Kvitova in a mouthwatering potential quarterfinal.

The other bottom half bracket is headed by No.3 seed Maria Sharapova . Remarkably, it is now nine years since the Russian burst onto the scene as a precocious 17-year-old, stunning Williams - and the tennis world - to take home the title.

Sharapova starts against Kristina Mladenovic and should she avoid a first week slip up, she is scheduled to meet former finalist Marion Bartoli in the fourth round and Sara Errani in the last eight.

Away from the title favorites, first round matches to look out for include the battle of youth versus experience between Laura Robson and Maria Kirilenko, former semifinalist Tsvetana Pironkova against Anastasia Pavlychenkova and the all-American clash between Sloane Stephens and Jamie Hampton.

Serena is embarrassed of all tennis players!

She befools tennis players and don't respect them. Where is the ethic in her mind or in her personality??

She thinks that because she is No.1, she is the best tennis player in world and she is better than all players and no one can beat her, but the fact is she is not REAL NO.1!

Tennis is a very good sport, full of energy, full of respect! Maybe Serena chose her career wrong, she could be a football player! An angry defence and a strong defence who just kicks the ball away and fights with all players, like Materazzi!

Victoria Azarenka: Looking forward to the challenge
Two-time semi-finalist at The Championships, Victoria Azarenka appears to look forward to the challenge posed by having to defend her impressive play at the All England Club in the past. The Belarusian, who began the year by claiming the Australian Open championship against Li Na, spoke to reporters on Saturday ahead of the start to her Wimbledon campaign.

She addressed her previous Wimbledon runs and how to break through to the final this year. “I think it's just a challenge, you know, really. It's to make that extra step,” said Azarenka, who also made a run at Roland Garros this year with a breakthrough semi-final performance. “I lost twice to, you know, a champion after that. They were pretty close matches,” she continued.

Azarenka also discussed her preparation for The Championships in light of the two weeks between the French Open and Wimbledon. “It's been going pretty good. I've been here since last Saturday,” she said. “You never know until you play a first match, so that's what I'm looking forward to do.”

Her first opponent? Maria Joao Koehler of Portugal, whose current ranking is No. 109.

The Belarusian, who has 16 career WTA singles titles, spoke about the adjustment needed from playing on the red clay of Paris to the grass at the All England Club. “Well, the movement you completely change. You don't slide anymore,” she said. “You have shorter points, so you also have to tactically adjust a little bit more and really accept the way that the grass is, to adjust and play and be aggressive.”

While Azarenka eventually ended her previous Wimbledon campaigns with losses in the final four to Petra Kvitova and Serena Williams, respectively, she seems realistic about her success and aptitude for playing on grass as well as about her prospects for making the semi-finals for a third time. “It's just important to take your opportunities,” she said. “First of all, it's important to get there.”

Yes, the game is definately on !!  Paul, you need to discribe to me what Serena means by Maria having a "black heart " . Why on earth is she bringing all those personal issues on the table . As if Maria stole Grigor from her ?? No , it is not wise of Maria to make it personal too in the press conference today. She must feel hurt or something. Let's hope it will bring the best out of her in the weeks to come.

It can't be about Maria though because Serena said "She's always talking about how happy she is about her relationship in interviews" but no one even asked her about Grigor until May and the interview Serena did was in March. Sure, she may have known they were dating for sure before the general public, but she said in interviews so the person she is talking about is probably Vika or Caroline, who are a lot more public with their personal/love lives than Maria

Still,Maria was wrong to say what she did. Serena is wrong as well, but 2 wrongs don't make a right

Brebis: Serena said "The guy with a black heart". I didn't know or care why she'd pop off like that about Grigor, but: Midaso: I wondered the same--mainly at Serena saying "she" wouldn't be invited to the cool parties. If that were about Masha, I'd think that remark was too dumb-assed even for Serena. (Who'd drop Sharapova from their invites whatever she straddles?) Evidently Maria took the intent personally, however. So, rock 'n roll.

Wait for Serena today......, she will comment again ! I think she does mean Maria, as she is more 'friends' with Azarenka and Wozniaki than with Maria. No clue why she makes these stupid remarks in the first place. Deep down must be an evil person. Didn't expect Maria to come with her comments. Mam and dad wil not be happy. Still like an explenation what it meand to have a " black heart ".
