Wimbledon Unveils Prize Money Increase

The £6.5 million increase takes the total prize pool for the 2013 tournament to a record £22.6 million.

Wimbledon Unveils Prize Money Increase

The All-England Club announced a 40% increase in prize money for the 2013 Wimbledon Championships .

The tournament's total prize money now stands at £22.6 million - the largest prize pool in the history of tennis and a £6.5 million rise on the winnings from the 2012 championships.

The winners of the men's and ladies' singles titles will each receive £1.6 million ($2.4 million) this year, a significant increase on the £1.15 million ($1.75 million) taken home by the 2012 champions, Roger Federer and Serena Williams.

However, the bulk of increase will be enjoyed by those falling earlier in the fortnight; prize money will go up 60% for singles players losing in the first three rounds, while the purse for qualifying is to rise by 41%. Doubles players will receive a 22% increase.

"I would like to thank all those whose contribution to Wimbledon's success both on and off court has today enabled us to announce these significant levels of investment in The Championships," All-England Club Chairman Philip Brook said.

"For the players, it is a deep appreciation of the demanding nature of professional tennis and the top-quality entertainment they bring, while for The Championships it is about giving all our visitors the finest stage on which to enjoy Wimbledon ," he added.

The club also confirmed its intention to continue with the recent renovation of the grounds by building a retractable roof on No.1 Court in time for the start of the 2019 tournament. Over the past five years the tournament has undergone a significant overhaul, with a roof added to Centre Court in 2009 and the construction of a new Court No.2 and Court No.3.

I was away for a while, didn't even watch any FO matches, couldn't even find ANY matches on youtube...but based on the result, i think i'm ok not have to watch them. It's nice to be in final but she still end up #3 for the next event, Wimbledon

Serena is a man power, no one can beat her and that's suck big time.

Maria will probably face Serena in SF again and we all know the result....

Well, best of luck Maria!

btw, nice to see Midaso BACK!!!

Agree! Serena is as powreful as a man, or maybe stronger than a man! I still say, Serena Williams definitely use some drugs!

She comes and plays in all tournaments and wins, some pictures with the trophies and goes home, then another day! As easy as ABC

She wastes time......wastes other players' time!*:-w waiting

Yeah, I agree . I think everybody can predict Serena's future !!! Serena = Lance ! Only thing we can do is just waiting, she can't hide it anymore. Her performance tells us all of truth...

The future will tell us but it will be too late by then for Maria !!  That is the mean thing about it cause she has retired herself by the then. You see it with Armstrong and Agassi. They won many matches but leave the losers behind , hurt !!!!

Yes, It's true. But we can't do something :( The truth is concealed very cleverly. It's not fair, but they're doing this without having any doubt :( WE CAN'T STOP THEM ! NOBODY CAN STOP THEM ! Unfortunately

I feel you, frida.

Nevertheless, Serena will end before Maria--I just have a feeling...

The end of Serena will be like the career of Serena--UGLY. You will see it.

Maria will have a great life after tennis.  Serena will not.

Definitely agree,I think she'll be plagued with health problems right through the rest of her life.

Grass season started,I'm not too excited. Grass favours Serena's game even more than the other surfaces. Maria really has to hope someone knocks her out. Shvedova,Zheng came close last year, will have to be one of those sort of players that frustrate her into errors. You'll never beat her by playing her same power game like Maria always does against her.

Maybe Maria will end before Serena! Serena doesn't feel any tiredness and she will play until she dies!

I think Serena will play until she becomes 40 years old! :-/ confused

I have the feeling that Maria is in Serena's head !! The "over my dead body "mentality ! She will keep on playing till Maria retires, hoping she will not win many tournaments anymore. Ugly, very ugly.
