Russian Tennis Star Kirilenko: 'My Time Has Come'

Maria Kirilenko

MOSCOW, May 15 (R-Sport) - Russian tennis star Maria Kirilenko has told R-Sport she feels she is reaching her peak as a tennis player and will soon achieve some big wins.

Kirilenko is at a career-high 12th in the world rankings and in February ended a four-and-a-half year streak without a WTA singles title when she won the Pattaya Open.

“I think every athlete has their time, when they open up and start to show results. My time has come just now,” she said Tuesday.

“I feel I’ve changed as a player, that I’ve started to think differently on the court, that how I perceive things has become different.”

“I’m getting pleasure from tennis now. And with that, even if I’m losing I keep calm.”

Kirilenko put the breakthrough down to her decision to stop playing doubles this season, after last year winning the WTA championships and Olympic bronze with Nadia Petrova.

“I think I’ve made the right decision. I’ve started to recover better and I’m not wasting a lot of my strength,” she said.

At 26, Kirilenko is nine years older than her friend and fellow Russian Maria Sharapova was when she won Wimbledon in 2004. Kirilenko said that her more tactical style of play made her a later bloomer than the more powerful Sharapova.

“I was always so cunning, ran a lot, tried to trick everyone. On the whole, that’s why the transition from juniors to the pros didn’t come easy for me. It was hard to play against grown women,” she said.

“But gradually with every year I’ve gained experience, and to look back now at how my career developed, every year was better than the last. Of course there weren’t any colossal leaps, but each season I had good wins against strong players.”

“Yes, Sharapova won a Grand Slam at 17, but she was always ahead of me in terms of physical development. Since childhood she was much taller, her data are completely different.”

On Tuesday, Kirilenko reached the second round of the Italian Open in Rome, defeating Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 6-3. She will face Varvara Lepchenko of the United States in the second round of the clay-court tournament.

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.

Ovechkin Fit and Ready to Play for Team Russia

Alexander Ovechkin

HELSINKI, May 15 (R-Sport) – Minutes after landing at the Helsinki airport on Wednesday, Alexander Ovechkin told a swarm of reporters he is ready to step on the ice for Russia’s quarterfinal game against the United States in the world hockey championship.

“With my health, everything is fine,” said the Washington Capitals forward, who became available to join Team Russia after the Capitals were eliminated from the NHL playoffs on Monday.
“I slept the whole flight and I’m ready to play.”

Ovechkin told reporters in Washington on Tuesday that he played through the first-round series against the New York Rangers with a "couple bruises but nothing major."

He had been expected to practice Wednesday night at Helsinki’s Hartwall Arena with back-up goaltender Vasily Koshechkin, but called off the workout after consulting with the coaching staff.

Regardless of Ovechkin's game shape, it remains unclear what role he will play with the national team. The Moscow native won his third Maurice Richard trophy as the NHL's top goal-scorer this season with 32.

Russia is tied for the tournament lead in goal scoring with 29, thanks largely to New Jersey Devils wing Ilya Kovalchuk, who leads all scorers with eight goals, and KHL star Alexander Radulov, who has five.

They play the Americans on Thursday.

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.

No.12 seed Maria Kirilenko hits a forehand return to Portugal's Nina Bratchikova.

No.12 seed Maria Kirilenko, who is currently at her highest-ever world ranking, showed why she is poised to break into the top 10 for the first time with a crushing victory of fellow Russian Nina Bratchikova, ranked 95 places below her in the world. Kirilenko hit the ball to all corners with perfect accuracy and recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win in just 67 minutes to book a second-round slot.

Andrew Lilley, who blogs on the RG site, has been an excellent commentator, especially re the Russia girls, for years. HE coined the name "Elegant Elena", for Dementieva.
