Not particularly good form , especially on the serve side, but she clearly was the better player (even though Lisicki was not playing her best either) and deserved to win.

19 straight clay wins... on her -once- worst surface.

That is simply impressive. Maria has improved immensly compared to 2 years ago. She still needs work, but I never thought that Maria would have change so much in so few years. She is still improving and I believe she is about to fine tune the details she still needs to beat just about everybody on tour. And yes you all know who I am talking about. :)

DAVAI!

I agree with you in all points. After checking the stats, I do not think Maria has played her best but still manage to win. I start to understand why clay surface is so special!!!

IMO, Too many DFs and the 2nd serve points won % is way too low. Since I have not watched the match yet, I'd like to hear more from you ALL about this match in particular.

Maria kept DF to a minimum and got much better production from her second serve. Angie's tough and Ana' head

seems to be in the right place, so it will be interesting to see how that one tuns out...

She appears to be in good form, and trying to be light on her feet, creating a base of motion which resists turning away in order to create power. She is taking some shots essentially from the air, if you look closely at her moves. Especially on backhand. I saw this in the Lisicki match. It's a quick little move, good for conservation of energy since it probably takes less work to create a swing from a near weightless position as it would to actually get the feet set.

She is resistant to letting go and trying to reach things on her backhand side with only 1 arm, preferring to make solid two handed contact, or nothing at all. Maybe something her coaches put her up to, and perhaps not a bad strategy. The jump is everything, after all. Also, her arms are fragile when taken one at a time. One depends on the other, in her game. An injury to either arm would mean that she has hurt her chances. In other words, this reluctance may be instinct to not become vulnerable. I cringe inside when I consider the power of some of the other players. Don't be afraid to crumple and absorb, Maria, when (momentum=mass times velocity squared) dictates. I know enough to avoid further reflecting on this. Pure thoughts. Purest thoughts....

So there is a big chance that Serena&Maria will play the final. It is not sure but...we have to be ready for that...

I hope Grigor is going to give Maria a good advice so Maria will defeat HER.

Anyway I really hate this final of Maria vs Serena.

GOD watch them...the unbeatable should be beaten

It is time for every bull in the stable to stay away from her now, crawl off her bones, except for as in the purest form of thought. This means everyone except her coaches, who are familiar with the fine print in the contracts. So I don't know what sort of influence any boy toys are allowed to muster. It's the rules...part of the cycle. Even what tapes/reading material Maria is allowed access should be carefully screened at these critical junctures. No distractions. I would try to stay away even from my own reflection, if I were her. Those shoulders are like something that should be kept under a veil, and it's only the Semi-finals...

MADRID, Spain - Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova took one step closer to a final showdown at the Mutua Madrid Open on Friday, both winning their quarterfinal matches - but one had it far tougher.

And that would be the No.1-seeded Williams, who had to battle two hours and 14 minutes to make it past Anabel Medina Garrigues, dropping the second set at love and coming within two points of defeat serving at 4-5, 15-30 in the third but eventually coming out on top against the Spaniard, 63 06 75.

"It was definitely a battle," Williams said. "I obviously didn't do much in the second set, which gave her a lot of confidence to play better. And then I thought she played really well after that in the third.

"I definitely want to cut back on my unforced errors. I had a lot of them today. Also I went for a lot more today than I have been in my past few matches. So I think I'm going to go back to the way I have been playing and being more calm and not making as many unforced errors as I did out there today."

And on the love set? "I wasn't really there, my feet weren't moving - I don't know what happened," she said. "To turn it around I got up earlier on the changeover and started doing high knees and just stretching and doing anything to try to get my intensity back up to where it needed to be.

"This second set is a good reference. I can show a lot of juniors what not to do."

The No.2-seeded Sharapova followed Williams onto center court and moved past Kaia Kanepi, 62 64.

"I was just happy to get past the quarterfinals - I feel like I've been stuck there in this tournament," Sharapova said. "I faced a really good clay court player today. A lot of her success has come on clay. I faced her at the French Open last year, where she had really good wins, so I know that she's capable. I was just really determined today, and I'm happy I was able to win with that type of scoreline."

Awaiting Sharapova in the semifinals is No.16 seed Ana Ivanovic, who broke serve six times and needed just 57 minutes to take out No.6 seed Angelique Kerber in the last match of the day, 63 61, an upset on paper but not based on the pair's history - Ivanovic is now 3-0 lifetime against Kerber.

Sharapova leads Ivanovic in their head-to-head series, 6-2, and has won their last five meetings in a row - their only 2013 meeting was a three set marathon in Stuttgart last month, however.

And so the battle for the No.1 ranking lives on, with Sharapova needing to do one round better than Williams to take the top spot - so if Williams loses in the semifinals, Sharapova will take it by just winning her semifinal; if Williams makes the final, Sharapova will take it by beating her in that final.

Great win, Maria!! It played out just as I had hoped. Even with the DF's, you were going for it. You are much

stronger mentally than Ana and under your relentless pressure, Ana broke down. Carry this drive through

into the final tomorrow and win it all!!!!
