Vettel Arrives in Sochi to Inspect F1 Circuit

Vettel Arrives in Sochi to Inspect F1 Circuit

SOCHI, April 22 (R-Sport) - Fresh from winning his third race of the season in Bahrain, Sebastian Vettel touched down in Sochi on Monday to test the Russian city's track for the 2014 Russian Grand Prix.

Vettel and former star David Coulthard are to whizz around the 5.9-kilometer Sochi Olympic Park Circuit, which is yet to be completed, in a regular road car.

The pair were first whisked around the site for the paddock by the deputy governor of Sochi's region of Krasnodar, Nikolai Buturlakin.

Vettel extended his championship lead in the drivers standings on Sunday with an imperious victory in Bahrain, finishing first in his Red Bull ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean in the Lotus.

Formula One’s first Russian Grand Prix will take place in October next year, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in February.

More than half of the tarmac required for the track has already been laid.

No calendar has been announced for the 2014 F1 season, and the only previous indication of a race date came last month when Sochi’s mayor said the race would be held in November 2014.

An October date for Sochi suggests F1 could rejig the calendar for 2014, as the Russian race would fall among the several Far Eastern races on the 2013 schedule.

The Sochi track uses some of the access roads for the Winter Olympics next February, and Putin said it was a prime example of Olympic legacy at work.

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.

Vettel about "complex" circuit...

Germany's three-time Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel said Monday he was impressed with the Formula One racing track currently under construction in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.

The venue is due to figure on the 2014 Formula One calendar with construction on the 5 872-metre track expected to be completed in July of that same year.

"I like the place that was chosen for the construction of the racing track very much," Vettel told reporters after he inspected the site alongside former F1 star David Coulthard.

"Of course you need to drive along the track to understand all of its details but according to the plans it will be an interesting and complex track."

Vettel, who won the Bahrain Grand Prix stage at the weekend, added that he was impatient for the opportunity to test the circuit in the city that is set to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

"The circuit was laid between the Olympic venues. The curves here will be really acute. The Sochi track will be really unique," he said.

Nikolai Buturlakin, the deputy governor of Krasnodar region said organisers expect 100 000 fans to attend the inaugural Sochi Grand Prix.

Giro Glory for Russian Rider Belkov

Giro Glory for Russian Rider Belkov

LONDON, May 12 (R-Sport) – Russian rider Maxim Belkov won the ninth stage of the Giro d’Italia grand tour Sunday with a stunning breakaway ride.

Belkov and two other rider broke off from the peloton early on with the aim of scoring points on the climbs, but the Russian managed to shed them and hold on until the end, building up a gigantic seven-minute lead at one point.

It is the second stage win of this year’s Giro for Belkov’s Katusha team after one earlier for Luca Paolini.

Belkov "came to this stage with a cool head and did what he needed to do, showed everyone what he's capable of," Katusha general manager Vyatcheslav Ekimov told R-Sport.

Vincenzo Nibali continues to wear the pink leader’s jersey, as one of his main rivals, Bradley Wiggins, lost time again with poor descents.

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.
