“The aim of our project is to study the genetic codes of primeval animals,” Semyon Grigoryev, a biologist from Yakutsk, says. “But the main objective is to clone a mammoth.”
It may seem like an easy task: simply extract genetic material from mammoth remains, transplant it into an egg cell of a modern female elephant, wait for 22 months (an elephant’s pregnancy period) and get a real mammoth! But the most difficult thing would be finding well-preserved genetic material.
“Our Korean colleagues are worried that the genetic material from mammoth remains found in Siberia may not be viable enough for that,” another biologist, Gennady Boeskurov, says.
“Sometimes, specimens of mammoth remains are so well preserved, almost as if the animal died yesterday. But they may not be as “fresh” as they look, because the ice of the so-called permafrost layer in Siberia sometimes melts in summer. So I don’t believe it is actually possible to find living cells in mammoths’ remains found in Siberia.”
It is known that microorganisms and plants could remain viable in a state of anabiosis (a state of suspended animation) for thousands of years, and then come back to life. But this does not work for mammoths.
Nevertheless, the project’s participants are still hoping to find a mammoth fossil that has never experienced a thaw. For this purpose, the Koreans are planning to bring a mobile laboratory to Yakutia (of which Yakutsk is the administrative center) this summer.
“There is another way to clone a mammoth – by using the so-called ‘indirect’ cloning method,” Gennady Boeskurov says.
“Fragments of mammoth DNA can be found in their remains in the Siberian permafrost, and we can restore the genetic codes of these animals that became extinct long ago. In fact, scientists have already decoded 50% of the mammoth’s genetic code. Many laboratories all over the world are working on that, and, if the mammoth’s genome is fully decoded, it would be possible to modify the genetic code of modern elephants and clone a mammoth in this way.”
The head of the Korean team of scientists, Mr. Hwang Woo-suk, an expert in stem cells, sounds very optimistic. “I believe, we’ll achieve our goal within several years,” he says.
However, some skeptics say that Mr. Hwang’s reputation as a scientist is not impeccable. Some time ago, he claimed that he had achieved some success in cloning a human. But later, Mr. Hwang had to confess that he had falsified the results of his work. But at the same time, nobody has ever questioned his success in cloning dogs, pigs and wolves. So, maybe, Mr. Hwan would really succeed in coning a mammoth.
This is Russia’s second joint project aimed at cloning a mammoth. The first one is being conducted in partnership with Japan. This year, a shinbone of a mammoth with well-preserved remains of bone marrow was found in Yakutia. It was decided to use this bone marrow for extracting genetic material for a mammoth clone.
Scientists hope that this clone will be born in about 5 years from now.

WHO IS THE REAL TRUE FRIEND OF MANKIND?
You might be surprised by the answer but it is the truth.
Watch this video for the answer:
It is impossible to have a better "friend" than a DOG.
One Argentinian dog has spent the past six years proving he’s a man’s best friend, even though that man is dead.
Capitán, a mutt who is some parts German Shepard, disappeared from his home in the small town of Villa Carlos Paz in the center of Argentina following the death of his owner, Miguel Guzmán, in March of 2006.
For days, nobody in Guzmán’s family noticed the absence of the dog, a surprise gift the man had given his young son, Damián, in the middle of 2005.
That was, until the family visited Miguel’s grave at a municipal cemetery.
“Damián started to shout that it was Capitán and the dog came toward us barking, as if he were crying,” Guzmán’s wife, Verónica Moreno, told La Voz del Interior, a large Spanish-language newspaper published in the Argentinian province of Córdoba.
Even though the family called to the dog, he stayed by his master’s grave.
This surprised them: Miguel had passed away in a hospital in the city and his body was taken to a funeral home far away from their residence. None of the family members recalled the dog following them to the cemetery before.
“The next Sunday we went to visit Miguel’s grave and the dog was there. This time he followed us when we returned, because we had walked. He stayed with us at home for a while but later went back to the cemetery,” Verónica said.
He has made that cemetery his home for the past six years.
Verónica told La Voz that she didn’t really like the dog when he was living with her. Even when he was brought home as a gift, the woman thought he would cause too much extra housework.
But now that she’s seen the dog stand so loyally by her husband’s grave, she says she views the mutt more sympathetically.
On top of all this, the municipal cemetery’s director, Héctor Baccega, says the dog has a special sense for Miguel and a very particular schedule.
The first time Baccega saw the dog, he arrived at the cemetery alone. The dog then did a couple of laps around the place before finding his master’s grave — all on his own.
“And that’s not all,” Baccega said. “Every day, at six in the evening, he lies in the front of (Miguel’s) grave.”
And even though the dog’s other owner, 13-year-old Damián, fondly remembers receiving Capitán as a puppy when he was a kid, he told the paper he is fine with Capitán’s new living arrangements.
“If he wants to stay there, it’s fine that he remains: he’s taking care of my dad,” he said.

The crocodiles left the Rakwena crocodile farm in the north of the country.
The waters in the nearby Limpopo river had risen and forced the farm’s owners to open the gates to prevent a storm surge.
Some of the reptiles were returned, while others, around half of the predators, remained on the loose. One of the crocodiles was seen 120 kilometers away from the farm.
“We've been recapturing them as and when the local farmers phone us to tell us that there are crocodiles on their property,” said Zane Langman, son-in-law of the farm owner, Johan Boshoff.
A number of floodings has hit the Limpopo and the neighboring Mozambique recently. 10 people were reported dead, many more injured.

Dartagnan: I think this creature is very clever, it doesn't want to eat "new radioactive fish" from Japan sea. It prefers to fast many years rather than dying from radiation. !!!
The isopod devoured the fish, bones and all, in just five minutes. But it has not eaten anything since, with Feb. 10 marking 1,500 days without food.
The crustacean was brought to the aquarium from the Gulf of Mexico in September 2007, measuring 29 cm and weighing 1 kg, and despite its lack of food still looks perfectly healthy, the keepers say.
“We have done all we possibly can,” said Takeya Moritaki, who is responsible for the creature.
Moritaki said he has tried an assortment of food items, including squid tentacles and saury, but the isopod has ignored them all.
Little is known about the biology of the creatures, which live in deep water in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Caribbean and which live off dead creatures and fish.
It remains a mystery why the isopod suddenly stopped eating and why it has remained healthy.
“Giant isopods are always in a state of semihibernation because they don’t know when they can eat, so they limit their energy on breathing and other activities,” said Taeko Kimura, a marine ecologist at Mie University.
“For that purpose they sometimes keep a large amount of fat in their livers, so maybe No. 1 still has a source of energy in its body, and that’s why it still has no appetite.”
The isopods are kept in a tank that uses artificial seawater so it is highly unlikely to generate organic substances such as plankton and sea algae that No. 1, which is about the same size as its peers in the tank, can feed on.
The aquarium was previously home to a giant isopod that died of natural causes, despite having a healthy appetite, making No. 1′s good health even more mysterious.

Dog 'saves life' of missing three-year-old girl
Mar 3, 2013
The girl, Julia, disappeared with her pet dog from the village of Pierzwin in the Lubusz province in western Poland on Friday. She was found lying in nearby marshland on Saturday morning with the dog by her side.
Firefighters who found the girl said the dog kept the child warm enough throughout the night, with temperatures plunging to minus 5 degrees Celsius (23 Fahrenheit).
More than 250 firefighters, police officers, rescue workers and local residents searched for the child throughout the night. They also employed a police helicopter with infrared cameras and six search dogs looking for the girl.
Julia was taken to hospital in Zielona Gora where she is recovering. She appears to have suffered some frostbite but her health condition is not life-threatening, the hospital’s staff said.
