EU unemployment: lost generation

Mar 5, 2013

франция безработица франция

A lot is being said and written today about a new “lost generation” of Europeans – young people aged between 15 and 25, who, despaired of finding a job, plunge themselves into voluntary self-isolation.

For social insurance agencies, it means a “choking collar” situation. When youth unemployment and the number of pensioners grow simultaneously, the sources of welfare payments are at their limits.

University graduates cannot find suitable jobs because companies do not want to hire inexperienced staff. Half of the able-bodied youth in the Eurozone are unemployed.

Still worse for young job seekers, employers avoid giving them permanent full-time jobs. Instead, they practice short-term contracts, usually for three months, and are free to sack them without any allowance or compensation after a contract expires. So, in most cases, the young are forced to accept jobs on the least favorable terms.

To improve the situation on the youth labor market, the EU authorities have launched a number of employment programs based on EU migration mechanisms. More and more South Europeans, particularly from Spain and Portugal, have moved to the north, mainly Germany, in the hope of finding jobs but there they face tough competition from Eastern European migrants.

Statistics show that youth unemployment already costs the EU 150 billion euros a year. To reverse it, European governments should focus on stimulating economic growth and job creation. Otherwise, ballooning allocations for jobseekers’ allowances will require more and still more austerity cuts.

Won't foreclose the possibility, but I would not rush to embrace that notion. :P Just leave it like that.

'Funeral for Our Future': 26 Arrested Blockading TransCanada Office

Escalating resistance to Keystone XL: 'If President Obama will not reject the pipeline, we will stop it ourselves.'

  - Jon Queally, staff writer

Protestors supporting arrestees with raised fists. (Photo: TarSandsAction) Climate activists in Westborough, Massachusetts were being arrested on Monday after blockading the entrance to corporate offices of the TransCanada corporation, the Canandian tar sands pipeline company hoping to receive approval for its controversial Keystone XL project.

Calling it a "Funeral for Our Future" and carrying a coffin emblazoned with the words “Our Future,” the protesters held flowers and sang an elegy as they marched in procession. As supporters gathered outside—chanting and singing songs in unison—dozens of protesters were inside where they refused to move, despite warnings from local police.

At least 26 people were arrested, according to the media members of the Tar Sands Blockade, which was liveblogging developments.

"We must stop it. We will stop it.” - Isobel Arthen, participant

“If the tar sands are extracted and burned, it will wipe out my future and the future of my entire generation,” said Will Pearl, a Tufts University freshman arrested in the action. “If President Obama will not reject the Keystone XL pipeline, we will stop it ourselves. We will rise up and resist—from the backwoods of Texas, to corporate offices in Massachusetts, to the steps of the White House.”

As each person arrested was brought from the building and put into a waiting police vehicle, those outside sang:

They are digging us a hole
They are digging us a hole
Six feet underground
Where the pipeline will go

They are digging us a hole
They are digging us a hole
Six feet underground
Where are future will go

Will lay down our bodies
We will lay down our souls
But we won't stand by and watch
While they dig us a hole

According to organizers, the blockade is part of a leadup to national solidarity actions expected to take place the week of March 16th-24th in which protestors from across the country are expected to target the offices of TransCanada, its investors, and political backers.

“The stakes couldn’t be higher,” said Isobel Arthen, a junior at Mount Holyoke who participated in Monday’s action. “The total carbon contained in Canada’s tar sands exceeds all the oil burned in human history. If we develop these incredibly dirty fossil fuels, my future will be marked by superstorms, untold numbers of climate refugees and climate-related deaths, and ultimately an uninhabitable planet. The planet is already the hottest it’s been in 4000 years. How hot will it be when the Keystone pipeline delivers over 800,000 barrels of tar sands a day? We must stop it. We will stop it.”

European leaders meeting in Brussels were met with protests against austerity as they try to work out a way to tackle the debt crisis crippling the Eurozone. Some of the protestors were arrested by police.

Thousands of protestors in Brussels were demanding that EU leaders bring austerity measures to a close and focus on boosting growth and reducing unemployment.

Unemployment in the Eurozone is now just under 12%, while youth unemployment is at 24.2%.

REUTERS JOURNALIST INDICTED OVER ANONYMOUS HACK

The deputy social media editor for Reuters has been indicted by the US Justice Department for allegedly conspiring with members of the hacktivist movement Anonymous.

According to a Justice Department statement released on Thursday, 26-year-old Matthew Keys of Secaucus, New Jersey was charged in the Eastern District of California with a number of counts involving his alleged cooperation with the international hacking group while employed as the web producer of Sacramento-based television station KTXL FOX 40.

Keys, confirms the DoJ, has been charged “with one count each of conspiracy to transmit information to damage a protected computer, transmitting information to damage a protected computer and attempted transmission of information to damage a protected computer.”

The Justice Department believes that Keys assisted members of Anonymous with hacking into the Los Angeles Times website by providing them with log-in credentials for a computer server belonging to KTXL’s corporate parents, the Tribune Company, after he was terminated from his role at the television station in October 2010. Two months later, claims the indictment, Keys helped members of Anonymous gain access to the master network.

In January 2012, Keys was hired by Reuters as deputy social media editor. In an article announcing the appointment last year, Reuters contributor Anthony DeRosa wrote that Keys will "play a key role in helping to train Reuters journalists on best practices in social media."

“According to the indictment, Keys identified himself on an Internet chat forum as a former Tribune Company employee and provided members of Anonymous with a login and password to the Tribune Company server,” the Justice Department claims in an official statement issued Thursday. “After providing log-in credentials, Keys allegedly encouraged the Anonymous members to disrupt the website. According to the indictment, at least one of the computer hackers used the credentials provided by Keys to log into the Tribune Company server, and ultimately that hacker made changes to the web version of a Los Angeles Times news feature.”

On March 21, 2011, Anonymous "ringleader" Sabu tweeted that Keys gave full control of the Times' website to hackers. Sabu was arrested by the FBI in May and has been cooperating as a federal informant ever since.

Elsewhere in the indictment, Keys is alleged to have approved of the defacement of the LA Times’ website by writing to an accomplice, “nice,” during an online chat. He could be sentenced to 10 years in prison and be fined a quarter-of-a-million-dollars for each count, bringing fees to upwards of $750,000.
