Shostakovich, Concertino for two pianos, op. 94

Schostakovich, Tarantella for two pianos VIDEO

Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich Russian pronunciation: [dmʲitrij ˌdmʲitrɪjevʲiʨ ʂɨstɐˈkɔvʲɪʨ] (Russian: Дмитрий Дмитриевич Шостакович;[1]25 September 1906 – 9 August 1975) was a Soviet Russian composer and one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century.

Shostakovich achieved fame in the Soviet Union under the patronage of Leon Trotsky's chief of staff Mikhail Tukhachevsky, but later had a complex and difficult relationship with the government. Nevertheless, he also received accolades and state awards and served in theSupreme Soviet of the RSFSR (1947–1962) and the USSR (from 1962 until death).

After a period influenced by Sergei Prokofiev and Igor Stravinsky, Shostakovich developed a hybrid style, as exemplified by Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District (1934). This single work juxtaposed a wide variety of trends, including the neo-classical style (showing the influence of Stravinsky) and post-Romanticism (after Gustav Mahler). Sharp contrasts and elements of the grotesque[2] characterize much of his music.

Shostakovich's orchestral works include 15 symphonies and six concerti. His symphonic work is typically complex and requires large scale orchestras. Music for chamber ensembles includes 15 string quartets, a piano quintet, two pieces for a string octet, and two piano trios. For the piano he composed two solo sonatas, an early set of preludes, and a later set of 24 preludes and fugues. Other works include three operas, and a substantial quantity of film music.

Through his virtuosity, strength of personality and high intelligence, Yuri Bashmet has given the viola a new prominence in musical life. Considered to be the world best viola player of the modern age, he has motivated the leading composers of our time such Shostakovich and Schnittke to write music specifically for him. Yuri Bashmet and Moscow Soloists celebration their 20th anniversary this year and will be performing in Toronto on May 3, 2012 as part of the North American Tour.

Russia’s famous violist and conductor Yuri Bashmet has announced the creation of the All-Russia Junior Orchestra which will play at the opening of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia’s Black Sea resort city of Sochi. Prior to that, the orchestra will give some performances as part of the Olympics cultural program this autumn.

The project has started already in the Russian Far Eastern city of Khabarovsk where Yuri Bashmet is holding his international musical festival (April 4-13). On the sidelines of the festival, Bashmet has been auditioning young musicians residing in the region aged 9-22 to choose the best of them for the future orchestra.

As a child, Bashmet was a frequent contest participant himself. He recollects many funny situations related with those times. This is how his very first contest took place…

"I was the only violist who arrived at the contest. The jury then decided to cancel the event due to the lack of participants, but my teacher Nina Vishnevskaya persuaded the jury to revise their decision, telling them that I had been rehearsing so much for the contest. It was decided that I would compete together with violinists. When it turned out that I got the highest mark, outstanding violinist Oleg Krysa, who was in the jury, said: “It is nonsense! Violist can`t win a violin competition!” So, they did not award anybody, and only gave presents to all six finalists."

While working with young musicians, Bashmet tells them many funny episodes from his career, which cools down tension which is so common during contest. This is how it happened in Khabarovsk, when Bashmet was rehearsing with young musicians. “We decided to start our project in the Khabarovsk region because it is home to many gifted musicians, and I am sure that some of them will join my new orchestra.” Bashmet will be travelling across all Russian regions until October, looking for gifted musicians. His new orchestra’s debut is scheduled for November, in Moscow and Sochi.

The International musical festival currently held by Yuri Bashmet in Khabarovsk attracts much public attention, which the conductor finds very inspiring. “I am concerned about the status of classical music in the regions. Flying from Moscow to Khabarovsk across seven time zones was not in vain. Our first forum in Khabarovsk last year lasted only for three days but the audience liked it so much that we decided to hold each every year. This time we will spend nine days there to give performances in two cities. I am very anxious about this trip, I like this region. When you fly from Moscow to Khabarovsk, you can`t stop thinking how large Russia is! One can hardly find a more responsive and cordial audience. Every musician will agree with me”, Bashmet said.

Valery Gergiev: “No business and politics at the Easter Festival”

The 11th Moscow Easter Festival opens today, April 15th to offer 150 concerts all across Russia and abroad until May 9th . The festival’s founder and artistic director, prominent conductor of the Mariinsky Theater orchestra, Valery Gergiev, shared his expectations about the event with the Voice of Russia.

“Ten years is quite a big distance, so to speak, when we can analyze what have been achieved, I mean, the most interesting and, probably risky projects we undertook. Our festival, as I see it, lacks any commercial and political goals. Honestly, I think that our society is really obsessed about politics and all those issues. Recently, we toured Lithuania, Estonia, Armenia and Kazakhstan- and we had no doubts on whether to do it or not depending on the political relations these countries have with Russia. Many things have changed in our countries in the past 20 years, but this should in no way affect our cultural ties. Not so long ago I was about cancelling our performances in Lithuania when reports in the local media announcing our concert in Kaunas sounded too politicized.  But I decided that we should go, and we arrived in Kaunas to have a very successful concert for the 7,000 audience. We received a very cordial welcome. You see, music has its own rules, and people come to listen to the music, and only they can decide if they need such concerts or not. I saw that the concert in Kaunas proved it very well that both Russia and Lithuania are interested in developing bilateral cultural cooperation.”

This year the Easter Festival is dominated by the music of Sergei Prokofiev, one of the greatest composers of the 20th century.

“The opening concert at the Great Hall of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory presents Prokofiev`s Symphonies NO. 1 and No. 5, and Piano concerto No.1. In all, the program of our festival features all seven symphonies and five piano concerts by Prokofiev. The performance from the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory will be broadcast live in Russia, Europe and in the US thanks to great support from our partners in France, Germany and US.”

It has long become a tradition to finish the Easter festival with a concert on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow, on May 9th, when Russia celebrates Victory Day. The organizers expect up to 250,000 people to visit the Easter Festival concerts in Russia and abroad this time.

What do u think they gonna say about pop, rock, hip-hop in a century?

Classic music(what's in a name, it's ALL music)was the pop of those days

with Mozart as their Michael Jackson. Never judge art without thinking about

the great man/women who created it...

Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov performs on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's original Anton-Walter-fortepiano at Mozart's former apartment in central Vienna October 25, 2012. The piano on which Mozart wrote all of his late concertos returned home to Vienna on Thursday for the first time since the composer's death in 1791. The fortepiano that Mozart played almost daily for nine years will stand in his former Vienna home, now a museum, for two weeks, culminating in a concert of Mozart works. Dartagnan: Glenn Gould is a canadian rebellious pianist. Glenn Gould shows us that it is possible to play the piano&the classical music differently. I mean not using the traditional way for example he played the piano on a short chair and obtained good results. He used to play pieces using his own tempo.   just listen his music here.
