Oh my lord... another beatdown.
She served so well at first, then the faults came *sigh*. Pretty much a repeat of the YEC final in terms of the development of the match, except both were playing slightly worse; Maria kept it close at the beginning of both sets and then let Serena run away with it. She had 2 BP chances though (I think). Something she hasn't had in a while. LOL. Maria just can't seem to take any of her opportunities against Serena. Everything becomes tight and lands in the net. Having said that, I still think there's a lot of hope - she managed to keep it close in a number of games and could have really ran away with the first 2-3 games of the second set. She had chances. If she can capitalise on those next time, and not rush points, she stands a chance.
It's really frustrating though... she's statistically got one of the best return of serves on tour, but every time Serena hit a second serve, she didn't take advantage of it. She just couldn't make it happen. But to me that's a positive, in a way. It shows she didn't lose playing her best tennis. We all know she can play much better than that, and the more times she plays Serena, the more likely her best will come out of her. I know Serena really gets in Maria's head, but the more Maria plays her, the less effect the presence of Serena will be. She needs to face her as many times as possible and regularly (most of their meetings have lengthy gaps) to acclimatise, or perhaps desensitize herself to the fear that Serena inflicts in her.
Also, if the Shoulderpova of 2010 pushed an inform Serena to saving multiple set points on grass, at WIMBLEDON, she can definitely do better than she did today considering how much she's improved since then. Maria will at least take a set off her, sometime soon. Then go onto win. It has to happen eventually. Masha never gives up and stranger things have happened. Roddick was federer's b*tch all throughout his career, winning only one of their encounters. Then last year he randomly beat him a second time. Masha and Serena may both be grannies when it happens, but I'm sure it will at some point.
And as for tomorrow, I really hope Azarenka wins. Even though I actually dislike her more. I feel if she can beat Serena, it may give Maria more belief. Or at least some sort of inspiration or competitive urge to prove herself as someone who can defeat her too . If Vika - someone who's also been beaten to a pulp by Williams for years - can take her down, then why can't Maria? The sooner one of the top girls figures her out, the better. Someone’s gotta and perhaps that will lessen the impossible task that Serena seems to be for Maria, or at the very least help alleviate the mental block.
