Just the top of a "gigantic" iceberg we see here. Guess the "neighbours" and CIS-countries

are already in "talks" since years about that global expansion, deals, etc...

Sochi could indeed be the start of those "Sharapov"-ventures & others but also the end of

Masha and tennis (?)...

I am not concerned with an end--I see a new beginning. Ever since Maria's involvement with Tarpischev in winning the Sochi bid, I have expected (among other businesses Yuri S has been working on the last few years) Sochi may see the advent of a Sharapova Tennis Academy.  If so, that will come off in the context of the global investments, so the big picture must be examined.

"Maria Sharapova is set to consolidate her position as the world’s highest-paid female athlete after agreeing a three-year sponsorship deal with Samsung.

The agreement with the Korean electronics giant was activated on April 1 and initially covers Sharapova’s native Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, with a view to expanding to become a global deal next year. “Maria really hasn’t been marketed that much in Russia,” Sharapova’s agent at IMG Worldwide, Max Eisenbud, told Bloomberg. “It’s important to her because that’s where her roots are. I also felt that was a really untapped market, with the 2014 Sochi Olympics coming up.”

The Sochi site http://www.sochi2014.com/en/team/partners/ lists Samsung among the usual multicorps suspects, plus Russian national capital, Rosneft, Aeroflot, etc. A partner curiously omitted is the state energy cartel Gazprom, who moved into the breach when the banks proved too encumbered with the Western financial crisis. See http://www.na-businesspr...om/jmpp/ostapenkoweb.pdf .

Also substantial sovereign investments solicited from the Peoples Republic of China. Wonder whether, alongside Russian company M-Industria and the UAE’s Allied Business Consultants' $6 billion manmade island in the Black Sea, one might find Qatari partners of French Total? Hey, why should any of the major contemporary players be absent?

We need to locate a Sochi 2014 investment "map".

"That's the way the world works... right now." --Maria Sharapova at 17

FIS Confident of Olympic Cross-Country Readiness

FIS Confident of Olympic Cross-Country Readiness

SOCHI, February 3 (R-Sport) - The International Ski Federation is confident in Russia’s ability to be ready for Olympic cross-country skiing in Sochi next year, an FIS spokesman told R-Sport on Sunday.

The Laura biathlon and cross-country complex in the mountains above Sochi hosted its first cross-country World Cup round on the weekend, a key test event before Olympic competition in February next year.

“We are confident that the organizing committee has been doing everything possible to be ready for the Olympic Games and you can see here that there are huge resources on the organization and on the construction part, so yes, we believe that everything will be 100 percent ready for the Olympics this year,” said Michael Lamplot, spokesman for FIS’ cross-country operations.

Sochi 2014 will be the first Winter Olympics to take place in Russia and will run from February 7 through 23 next year.

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.

Russians Ski to Victory in World Cup Cross-Country

Maxim Vylegzhanin

SOCHI, February 3 (R-Sport) - Russia won the men’s cross-country World Cup team sprint in Sochi on Sunday, skiing to victory by an imperious margin.

The second-placed Swedish team was a full 18.4 seconds behind Russia’s Maxim Vylegzhanin and Dmitry Japarov, with Germany 2.1 seconds further adrift in third.

“Thank you very much to Maxim, he did a great job for us and at the end it was an easy victory,” Japarov said in televised comments.

“I hope that next year, we can repeat the victory again,” Vylegzhanin said, referring to the Winter Olympics, which will be held in Sochi next year.

Russia’s second team was fourth, ahead of Norway and Kazakhstan.

Earlier Sunday, Finland won the women’s team sprint.

On Saturday, Norway’s Kristin Stormer Steira won the women’s distance race, with Swiss skier Dario Cologna victorious in the men’s event. Friday’s individual sprints saw wins for Kikkan Randall of the United States and Norway’s Petter Northug.

The Sochi round of the World Cup was the first major cross-country test event at the Laura cross-country and biathlon complex, the future Olympic venue.

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.

President of the Russian Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov (RIA Novosti / Vitaliy Belousov)

President of the Russian Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov (RIA Novosti / Vitaliy Belousov)

Russia will be aiming to win 15 gold medals at the Sochi 2014 Winter Games, says the country's Olympic Committee President Aleksandr Zhukov, which should be enough to finish top of the medal table.

The Russian Olympians are traditionally strong in winter sports and will try to make amends for their Vancouver 2010 ‘blunder’, where they managed to earn just three gold medals and finished at a historically low 11th place in the medal table.

"It is possible to perform well and take first place in the team table at the Sochi Olympics," the R-Sport agency quotes Zhukov as saying. "At the Games about 15 golds will be needed, that should be enough."

According to Zhukov, if positive dynamics in winter sports results continue then Russia could count on “40 to 45 medals in total and 14 to 15 gold”. The final target will be set in the spring after the winter season concludes.

Three years ago host nation Canada topped the medal table with 14 gold medals leaving main rivals Germany and the United States far behind.

367 days are left until the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games in Russia. In the run-up to this major sports event, an Olympic Countdown Clock has been set up in Russia’s Rostov-on-Don. On February 7, similar clocks will be brought to seven other big Russian cities of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Pyatigorsk and Khabarovsk to start Olympic countdown a year in advance.

On February 7, 2013 Sochi will start running special test competitions to try Olympic tracks and athletes alike.

2014 Sochi Olympics countdown: 368 days left

The 22nd Winter Olympic Games will run in Sochi from 7-23 February, 2014 followed by the 11th Winter Paralympics that will last from 7-16 March, 2014.

Sochi: Olympic Dream coming true

Feb 7, 2013

Thursday marked one year to the opening of Russia’s first Winter Olympics, to be held in Sochi on the coast of the Black Sea. Appearing at a gala held in Sochi’s main ice arena on the occasion, IOC President Jacques Rogge extended formal invitations to delegates from national Olympic committees.

At a subsequent meeting with officials in Sochi, President Vladimir Putin looked into the progress of preparations for the Sochi Olympics and Paralympics. He also spoke about the unifying role played by the Sochi vision in the five and a half years since Russia was awarded the right to host the 2014 Winter Games:

"We have worked very hard in order to accomplish the Olympic preparations on time. Now, we are one hundred percent confident that they will be accomplished on time and with top-notch quality in all aspects. All of Sochi’s sporting venues are ready for hosting test competitions. Those that have already hosted tournaments have won unanimous international praise".

The Russian leader inspected the Olympic Park, ice arenas and the Olympic media center. He pointed out that the coastal venues are within 30 minutes’ travel of the mountain ones, which makes Sochi at least 4 times more compact than the host city of any other Olympics.

And this is what chief Russian Sochi organizer Dmitry Chernyshenko had to say:

"The 40 or so test tournaments to be held this year will convince the world that new Russia is a dynamic modern country, and its 2014 Winter Olympics will be the most innovative in history. The organizers will make sure that they are ready for playing hosts to the Olympians".

President Putin instructed officials to use the infrastructure built for the Sochi Olympics for facilitating economic development in entire southern Russia in subsequent decades. After the Olympics, Sochi itself must remain a world-class hub of winter sports and a year-round tourist attraction.

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.

Sochi Olympics Tickets Go on Sale in US Next Week

WASHINGTON, February 8 (By Maria Young for RIA Novosti) Tickets haven’t even gone on sale in America yet for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, set to begin in Sochi, Russia a year from now, on Feb. 7, 2014, but already ticket sellers predict the biggest crowd-pleasing events will sell out “sooner rather than later.”

“The most popular events from a US standpoint typically are hockey, figure skating, downhill, some of the newer boarding and skiing events, and those obviously will sell out,” said Mike Kontos, a spokesman for CoSport, the authorized ticket reseller in the United States and six other countries for the 2014 Winter Games, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“Olympic tickets will always appeal to people because it’s one of those once in a lifetime trips, something to do at least once,” he added.

Russia began selling Olympic tickets to Russian citizens and foreigners living in Russia on Thursday.

Tickets for the general public are divided among the competing nations and offered through each nation’s national Olympic committees, which make them available through authorized ticket resellers (ATRs).

In the US, tickets go on sale Monday, February 11 at noon ET (1700 GMT) at CoSport.com, with prices for individual events starting at $22.

The way Kontos described it, scores of people from across the US will be sitting in front of their computer screens eagerly watching the clock so they can get their requests in as soon as the window opens.

“We encourage fans to log on, build an account and register ahead of time, so that way when sales go live on Monday, they will already have an account ready and they can start choosing, but it is first come, first served,” he said.

Although CoSport is the only ATR in the US, several online travel sites promise to offer Olympic tickets and packages that include guides, tours, and airfare as soon as tickets become available.

“When purchasing your 2014 Olympics tickets, be sure to look for tickets sold by authorized retailers… ensuring that you are not supporting any unfair or questionable practices, or getting ripped off,” advised the travel site Destination360.

But Destination360 also suggested visitors could pre-book packages from prominent travel agencies and tour operators with perks that include guided tours of Sochi and the Black Sea area.

“As the pinnacle of athletic ability, with the deepest and most historic roots in sports, the Olympic Games serve as entertainment and inspiration across the globe. Premiere Sports Travel has the Winter Games packages you need to support your country and favorite athletes,” said Premiere Sports Travel, which organizes trips to sporting events all over the world.

“Those packages are not available yet, we’re not exactly sure when they will be, but we have a lot of people waiting,” said a customer service representative who answered the phone there.

StubHub, an online site that facilitates ticket sales and purchases between fans, told RIA Novosti, “We have no plans to allow ticket resales for next year’s Olympic games,” due to International Olympic Committee regulations.

Americans travelling to Russia need to obtain visas in order to enter the country. But in the past, most host countries have worked to make the process easy for Olympic visitors, Kontos said.

In Beijing, which hosted the Summer Olympics in 2008, Kontos said the official Olympic accreditations given to athletes and coaches were treated like visas, and for ticket holders, “there were mechanisms in place” to ensure they had visas in time to travel.

“At this point those details are being worked out, but traditionally host governments will work with the organizing committee to facilitate and streamline entry into the country for their Olympic guests,” he added.
