MOSCOW, RUSSIA: Ekaterina Makarova ensured that Russia progressed against Japan in their Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round match in Moscow as she pulled them back from 2-1 down to win on the final day of action.

With Japan in touching distance of reaching their first semifinal since 1996, the Russian world No. 20 wasted little time in bringing the visitors back down to earth with a 61 61 triumph over the 42-year-old. Date Krumm who had no answer to Makraova's 21 winners, mustering just 14 of her own and throwing in 29 unforced errors.

Date-Krumm after the match commented on an achilles injury that meant she only decided to play in the match at the very last minute whilst watching Morita fighting for her country and felt that she had to give it a go.

Makarova was then brought into the doubles line-up alongside Elena Vesnina, who had earlier been defeated by Ayumi Morita, and the former Grand Slam doubles finallists made light work of the Japanese pairing of Misaki Doi alongside Morita.

Morita had edged Japan ahead of Russia after recording a 64 61 with her win over Vesnina, herself a last minute replacement for Maria Kirilenko, on Sunday morning. On the opening day she cancelled out Kirilenko's opening rubber win against Date-Krumm with a 62 62 victory over Makarova.

Russia will now await the winner of the tie between Serbia and Slovak Republic in the semifinal.

The latest rating table of the Federation Cup keeps Russia third, after the title-holding Czechs and the Italians.

In the latest FC quarterfinals played in Moscow Sunday, Russia defeated Japan 3-2, Italy beat the US 3-2, and the Czechs routed Australia 4-0.

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.

Russia counting on Maria Sharapova in Fed Cup

Russia’s Fed Cup captain Shamil Tarpishchev said yesterday he is still hopeful that top players -- Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova -- will be available for April’s Fed Cup semifinal against Slovakia.

“I need to study the playing schedules of our girls before starting to plan the line-up for the match with Slovakia,” Sport Express daily quoted Tarpishchev as saying.

“Of course Sharapova would strengthen our team a great deal, but we should never forget about her personal interests. We must try to minimise any losses for those who are battling for the top places in the rankings.”

Russia’s top player Sharapova has played just three Fed Cup ties in her career so far, making her debut in 2008 to help satisfy Olympic Games qualification criteria.

After playing again in 2011, she also featured in the quarterfinal win over Spain in 2012 in the run-up to the London Games.

Tarpishchev said that Sharapova had expressed her desire to play for Russia in this season’s Fed Cup campaign, and that he had been keen to call her into his squad for the later stages of the competition.

‘Time cone changes might affect’

“If Masha (Sharapova) has a relatively simple tournament schedule ahead without a series of top-class events in America we will call on her,” he said.

“But otherwise the trans-Atlantic flights and time zone changes can seriously harden the battle for the top spot in the WTA rankings. We’re not going make her life even tougher.”

Tarpishchev said he had an agreement with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Vera Zvonareva, who had both said they were available to play for Russia this season, adding that he could also call Kuznetsova into his team if need be.

“It was very important for Svetlana (Kuznetsova) to improve her individual ranking at the beginning of the season and she asked me to release her from playing against Japan,” Tarpishchev said. “She wants to be in the world’s elite and we definitely respect her desire.”
