MOSCOW, January 14 (R-Sport) - Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova is finally taking to Twitter after years of loyalty to rival social network Facebook.
Unsurprisingly, the first tweet of the world No. 2, who cruised into the second round of the Australian Open earlier Monday, was a commercial linked to her new line of candy.
"Your ultimate sugarmama has arrived #myfirsttweet," said the fashion icon, whose cover picture shows her glancing back from the wheel of a classic car.
An hour after her first tweet the 25-year-old Sharapova, sport's highest female earner in 2012, had racked up more than 7,600 followers.
Since 2010 Sharapova has been posting video and text updates on Facebook, where she has 9.2 million "likes."
Maria Sharapova: It's safe to say that this scarf is currently my ultimate fashion obsession, snow or sunshine. It's the perfect fabric, color, and size. What is your current must have?
Dartagnan: No it is not always safe to wear a long scarf.
A Long scarf is always beautifull but we have to be carefull with it.
For example the dancer, Isadora Duncan has been killed by her own long scarf caught in her car's wheel
It is just a remark about the danger of a long scarf.
"FOREWARNED IS FOREARMED"
Forewarned is forearmed is something that you say which means that if you know about something before it happens, you can avoid it.
Maria Sharapova, the No.1 female athlete on Facebook, surpassed 10 million fans on the social media platform this past week, just days away from her title defense at the French Open.
There's no doubt about it, Maria Sharapova has one of the biggest fan bases around - and that fan base set a new milestone this past week, as she surpassed 10 million fans on Facebook.
Sharapova was already the No.1 female athlete on Facebook and she continues to grow her fan tally on the social media platform, up to 10,006,973 fans as of Monday night. And she's not just a one trick pony - in 2011 she was also Bing's most searched athlete, male or female, and after getting Twitter during the Australian Open she has accumulated over 221,000 followers in approximately four months.
"Ten million Facebook fans is just hard to believe," Sharapova said about the milestone. "I am so fortunate to have amazing fans all over the world who support me on all the good and bad days."
Sharapova has had a blistering 30-4 start to the 2013 season, winning her 28th and 29th WTA titles at Indian Wells and Stuttgart and holding strong to her No.2 ranking. In less than a week she will kick off her title defense at the French Open, where she had one of the most magical moments of her career last year, becoming just the 10th woman in WTA history to complete the Career Grand Slam.
