'Brazil here we come,' Iran fans sing

Millions of joyous Iranians flooded the streets of Tehran on Tuesday after the Iranian national team beat Asia powerhouse Korea Republic 1-0 in Ulsan to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™.

"Brazil here we come," sang the fans in football-mad Iran. Footage aired on state television showed similar outpourings of joy around the country. In Tehran, residents waved the green-white-red national flag while motorists honked their horns and bikers sped through the capital to join the festivities.

Some motorists were parked on the roadside with their radios turned up at full volume as passersby danced and cheered while policemen looked on.

The win on Tuesday put Iran top of Asian qualifying Group A with 16 points followed by Korea Republic with 14 points. Both teams qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil. It is the fourth time that Iran has clinched a berth at football's high feast.

High praise
The qualification was hailed by top officials. Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei thanked the team for bringing "happiness" to the people of Iran, state media reported. "The national football team's victory made the people and especially sports fans happy. I thank those who created this happiness," Khamenei said.

Newly-elected President Hassan Rowhani was equally enthusiastic: "I am certain this victory is the prelude for major victories and the decisive presence of Islamic Iran in all fields," Rowhani said in remarks carried by the ISNA news agency.

On Vali Asr Street in Tehran, young men jumped up and down to express their joy. "It was a big surprise. I could not have imagined that we could beat Korea in front of their supporters at home," said Mehran, 29.

The sport ministry said it plans to hold a ceremony at Tehran's Azadi stadium on Wednesday to mark Iran reaching the finals. Iran made their FIFA World Cup final debut in Argentina in 1978, but failed to progress beyond the group stage.

Twenty years later they qualified for the finals in France, where they scored a memorable victory against USA. Iran also made it to the Germany 2006 but again failed to make it beyond the group stage.

Asian giants Iran, Korea Republic and Australia reached the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ but Uzbekistan narrowly failed to automatically book their place on a dramatic night of action Tuesday.

Australia left it late before substitute striker Josh Kennedy earned a 1-0 win over Iraq in Sydney with an 83rd minute strike, enough to take the Socceroos through to their third successive FIFA World Cup.

Later, Iran edged a grudge match with Korea Republic 1-0 in Ulsan to qualify top of Group A, giving the hosts some nervous moments as they awaited news from Tashkent, where rivals Uzbekistan were playing Qatar.

The Uzbeks smashed five second-half goals past the Qataris, but despite their 5-1 win they failed to reach their target of winning by seven goals and now go into a play-off series against either Jordan or Oman, who play round out the Asian qualifying matches later tonight.

Iran, Korea Republic and Australia now join Japan, the Asian Cup-holders who booked their ticket a fortnight ago, at next year's FIFA World Cup as the only countries to have qualified alongside hosts Brazil. Although all four Asian qualifiers are familiar names at the FIFA World Cup, the year-long elimination process has been hard-fought and came down to the last week of the final group stage.

Ex-Middlesbrough striker Lee Dong-Gook tested Iran goalkeeper Rahman Ahmadi with a stinging attempt from distance but despite dominating the first half, Korea Republic struggled to create clear chances. Iran started the second half with more ambition and on 60 minutes, they were suddenly in front thanks to a defensive blunder from Kim Young-Gwon and the alert thinking of Reza Ghoochannejhad.

Defender Kim failed to clear the ball on the touchline and had his pocket picked by Ghoochannejhad, who scampered goalwards and bent a left-footed shot around Jung Sung-Ryong. Korea Republic pressed desperately for the equaliser and Kim Young-Gwon nearly made amends for his mistake when he put a free header wide near the end. Lee Keun-Ho also nearly headed the leveller in injury time.

However the Taeguk Warriors clung on to Group B's second automatic qualifying spot and reached their ninth FIFA World Cup on goal difference, despite Uzbekistan's heroics in Tashkent.

Five-star Uzbeks fall short
Uzbekistan were the aggressors from the start and on 36 minutes, striker Alexander Geynrikh was just inches from putting the hosts ahead - before they fell behind to a sucker-punch seconds later.

Trying to play the ball out of defence, a hard pass cannoned off the legs of Server Djeparov and into the path of Hasan Al Haydos, and the forward picked out Abdulqadir Ilyas who finished with aplomb to give Qatar a shock 1-0 lead.

Qatar defender Ibrahim Abdulmajed nearly did Uzbekistan a favour when his header from a corner crashed against his own crossbar, and Jasur Khasanov tested the woodwork again with a sweeping volley from the edge of the box. Geynrikh had the ball in the net but was flagged offside, and in first-half injury time he wriggled through two defenders but saw his close-range shot denied by goalkeeper Abonora.

Uzbekistan again took up residence in Qatari territory in the second half and they finally got their reward when Timur Kapadze floated in a long ball and Djeparov's quick cross was poked home by substitute striker Bahodir Nasimov on 60 minutes. Oleg Zoteev's dribble and shot put Uzbekistan in front on 72 minutes, and the massed fans at Bunyodkor Stadium dared to dream when Nasimov scored their third from close range two minutes later.

Late strikes from Odil Ahmedov and Ulugbek Bakaev raised excitement to fever pitch but the clock quickly ticked through injury time and Uzbekistan were kept waiting for a first foray to football's biggest stage. Uzbekistan now await the winner between Jordan and Oman in a two-leg playoff on 6 and 10 September to determine who will face the fifth-place South American side in an intercontinental play-off for a Brazil 2014 berth.
