Why all the sad faces in here? Noone died or anything. There´s still three more tournaments left, and Maria have improved all year, so there´s a lot to look forward to.
Remember last year, and the year before that...
She made it to the semifinals for gods sake, how can anyone be sad about that. So she didn´t kick azarenkas butt, a thing i personlly would have loved to see, but i know that sometime soon she will. That´s Maria, that´s who she is, and i guess that´s why a lot of us follows her.
My bet is, that in a couple of days Maria will be back out there on court, working her ass of, focusing on the Asian tour, and we should look forward to those tournaments too.
I do, judging by that magnificent start of the first set, i will lean back and enjoy the ride.
Lastly, i will congratulate Maria with getting to the semis for the first time since 06´. Really a job well done,Maria.
Hope you get to enjoy a couple of days at home and that vanille ice cream with the rainbow sprinkles. ;-)

Have a great sunday everyone
;-)

Even though it's bitter seeing Serena win yet another slam, I did take pleasure in seeing Azarenka choke, losing the last 4 games of the third set. And then putting a towel over her head and face afterward in her chair. Smug, unlikable punk. I really thought she was about to get away with playing an identical match to the Maria one. Get smoked in the winners department, but let the opponent self-destruct with errors. And Serena did look awful for most of the match with mistakes. But, unlike, Maria, Serena has the serve and power to bail her out against Vika.

So Serena wins Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the US Open just like that. It's hard to feel excited about women's tennis right now, but what can you do......

Big opportunity missed by Maria

Serena was below level today, and Vika did nothing special honestly

Definitely Maria could have beaten Serena today, but who knows, Serena seems to always play her best tennis against Maria.

Oh well, off to Asia!

I'm starting to think it's more of a mental issue for Maria to play Serena and not so much her game.

Can't believe I was so happy to see Serena win yesterday :D She could have finished it in 2 sets if she hadn't dropped the level so much. Kind of what happend with Maria I think but Serena managed to get herself back together at the end.

It's so clear Serena takes some special medicines! She won more than 3 WTA titles at the age of 30!
Many young players couldn't do this yet! It's unbelievable

I agree with you. Didn't see anything special about Azaranka but yet Maria cannot beat her. Serena was nervous but that's the right time to beat her but Maria missed her chance.

another huge opportunity missed and it sucks big time!

Didn't surprise me that Maria lost to Azarenka, or that Azarenka lost to Williams. What DID surprise me was that maria had chances to win the semi, while azarenka maybe SHOULD have won the final. Just felt that when it mattered (the third), azarenka was more consistent and solid than maria. MARIA'S serve is still a bit a hit and miss (compare maria's to the power AND ACCURACY of she-man). As far as the year goes, yeah it has to be said a good one for maria, top three in performance levels and results overall. So a real step forward. The downside is that she-man and azarenka still have an edge (in williams case more than just an edge). Can she develop her game to overcome them, and stay ahead of the others? Well thats her challenge.....

I agree that after watching her last two matches, I see NOTHING remarkable about Azarenka’s game. It’s eerie how similar the stats in both matches were. As I mentioned before, Maria had 44 winners to Vika’s 19. Yesterday, Serena also had 44 winners and Vika had a paltry 13. But Maria did have the 42 unforced errors to Vika’s 19. Serena had a whopping 45 unforced errors and Azarenka finished with 28. Maria had 8 aces to Vika’s zero. Serena had 13 aces to Vika’s zero again. 10 DFs hurt Maria and even Serena had 5, which is a ton for her. Azarenka had 5 DFs and 4 DFs in the semis and final.

So you look at these numbers and you have to say that Vika was thoroughly dominated and pushed around. What she does do well is move around and not beat herself for the most part. And she has a good return game. She was reading Serena’s serves well. But, to me, Azarenka is basically a Wozniacki with more power. Just like Caroline, her serve is extremely weak and attackable. She IS capable of generating winners off the ground, so I don’t want to completely say she’s in puff-baller Caroline’s category. But in these two matches, her strategy was, for the most part, to keep the ball in play until Maria and Serena made an error, just like Caroline or Radwanska or even Kerber. And it worked against Maria and was 2 points from it working against Serena. You shake your head about how she nearly pulled it off despite getting manhandled.

But you did see the stark difference between Serena and Maria. When Serena absolutely had to hold serve and get a break or two, she got them to comeback and win. When Maria had to hold, she couldn’t. And she did nothing against Vika’s weak serve in the 3rd and you could tell Maria was disgusted about that, in her press conference.

Big picture, I see no reason why Maria can’t turn her rivalry against Azarenka around. She has the game and the weapons. She just needs to play smarter in the big points because Vika has proven to be mentally tough. Maria needs to go out there and take it. Play with confidence and SERVE BETTER. There was no killer instinct from Maria in that 3rd and it cost her. Hopefully, she’ll learn from this.

She-man is more powerful. Azarenka is more accurate. That is what maria has to overcome.
