Numerous candidates had no opposition in the May 29 primaries, but many of them will have competition from the Green Party and Libertarians in November.

With several contenders emerging from the Occupy Wall Street movement, the Green Party will hold its state convention near Helotes Saturday and Sunday to approve a slate of statewide and Bexar County contenders.

The Greens have already nominated most of their hopefuls, but selections are pending in several key races. Although the convention is open to the public, only delegates will vote on nominations. The party's state convention this coming weekend will be at the Grey Forest Scenic Clubhouse, 18249 Sherwood Trail. The national convention will be in Maryland July 12-15.

At least 20 Green Party candidates from Bexar County have been nominated for November's general election ballot.

The Greens are fielding hopefuls against Republican Precinct 3 Commissioner Kevin Wolff, who had no GOP or Democratic opponents in the May 29 primary, and against Precinct 1 Commissioner Sergio “Chico” Rodriguez, a Democrat who outpolled Jennifer V. Ramos and Ricardo A. Martinez.

Joel Benavidez, running for justice of the peace, Precinct 2 Place 1, is from the Socialist Party, according to a Green Party announcement of their tentative slate. Also on general election ballots will be Paul Pipkin, a Bexar County Green Party leader, who's running for tax assessor-collector.

Pipkin, while waging his own campaign, said he's “more concerned with the slate, especially assisting our Occupier candidates. Also, I'm working to explain to the progressive Democrat constituencies of the '90s why they need to ‘Go Green' now,” he said.

The Libertarian Party also will complete its nomination process soon. Meeting in Fort Worth Friday through Sunday, the party will adopt an extensive list of legislative, state and congressional candidates, with a small Bexar County slate. Libertarian James M. Holland will oppose Wolff for commissioner, and Bill Grisham is running for tax assessor.

According to the Texas Secretary of State's Office, independent and minor parties have until June 29 to file for the November ballot.

Val, I couldn't see Maria's final live because I spent most of Saturday at our state convention with our guest Dr Jill Stein--Green's 2012 Presidential candidate. (Our tech man was able to follow the scores on a palm device & keep me updated.)

Dr Stein assured me SYRIZA is on her radar.

If the West gets nasty next week, know the Hellenes have friends here who will react.

On Thursday more than 450 people--representing a broad cross-section of Houston--gathered in the city's Skyline District at a peaceful demonstration calling for the end of poverty-wage jobs in Houston.

The protestors--many of whom clean downtown buildings and make just $9000 annually as janitors--were gathered outside of JP Morgan Chase when police horses trampled multiple participants. One of the protestors was arrested after she ran out into the street to help a janitor who had been knocked down by one of the horses.

This violent reaction by the police to a group of workers peacefully protesting is an outrage. This is not the way our city--or democracy--is supposed to work.

Join us in calling on Houston's mayor and business community to put an end to economic injustice by intervening on behalf of janitors and working together to create good jobs for Houston.

Sadly, I had to reply:

Agree re support, for sure. But y'know, it IS the Houston I remember from the 60s--thug HPD, Klan-ridden trash who'd floated down the Sabine Valley. Probably even more like Houston in the 20s-early 30s. The mistake is to imagine the vicious 1% & their trained animals ever really change.

This is what class war looks like.

Wow, Paul ! I just googled you.
I had no idea about this thread.
Well sadly I can't vote for you since I'm an Austin resident
but Best of Luck.
Also, I see on your bio you went to UT Austin?
I graduated from there just a year and a half ago! I studied government.
So you're a fellow longhorn and a Masha fan too! AWESOME!

gah! She is running against the Congressman I interned for last year (Lloyd Doggett).

It will be a tough fight for sure. I am not in the disctrict anyways. Sorry :(

Hopefully she can do some events at UT Austin or UTSA to get exposure!

Well then, you know Lloyd ain't an incumbent. 35th is a new district. I'm sure you know somebody who lives there.

Tell me why he voted for House Bill 347 (to criminalize protest.)

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein and her running mate have been arrested at a sit-in at a Philadelphia bank over housing foreclosures.

The arrests came after about 50 party supporters staged a protest Wednesday against Fannie Mae, the government-sponsored mortgage lender.

Some tried to reach Fannie Mae's downtown office through the adjacent bank. They staged a sit-in when they were denied access to the office building.

Stein and her running mate, Philadelphia activist Cheri Honkala (HAHN'-kah-lah), are among five people arrested. Police say they will face charges of defiant trespassing.

The demonstrators included several city residents struggling to keep their homes. Two met with Fannie Mae officials.

Stein is a Harvard-educated physician. Her "Green New Deal" platform aims to create sustainable local economies and reduce corporate power in politics.
