Happy birthday Yelena Isinbayeva!

Today, we're wishing a happy birthday to one athlete we'll be sure to watch at the London Olympics: the greatest female pole vaulter in the world, Yelena Gadzhievna Isinbayeva!

Isinbayeva: I Was Close to Quitting

Russian pole vault world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva would have quit the sport if the coach she calls her "second father" hadn't taken her back last year, she has told RIA Novosti.

Isinbayeva set a new indoor world record of 5 metres 1 centimeter in Stockholm last month, almost a year after returning to her childhood coach Evgeny Trofimov.

Isinbayeva dropped Trofimov in 2005, but went to her home city of Volgograd to seek his forgiveness in March 2011, and says she would have quit the sport if he refused to take her back.

"I understood: either him or no-one. With that thought I went to Volgograd: either Evgeny Vasilevich [Tromifov] or the end of my career," she said in an exclusive interview with RIA Novosti this week.

"And, thank God, my career continues."

Trofimov encouraged a 15-year-old Isinbayeva to try pole vaulting in 1997 after she failed as a gymnast. He developed her prodigious talent, training her until 2005, when she dropped him in favor of working with former men's world record holder Sergey Bubka.

Isinbayeva was far ahead of the competition between 2003 and 2009, when she set 27 world records, but her form tailed off in 2010 and she took a break from the sport.

This led to an epiphany when she realized she was missing Trofimov, she said.

"I understood that something wasn't right when I started to lose. I started to delve into myself. And that's how I realized that the problem was something different, and that only Evgeny Vasilevich could raise me to a new level."

She chose to meet Trofimov on a day when Orthodox Christians ask forgiveness for their sins, she said.

"We met. The conversation was straightforward. It was like the return of the prodigal daughter; I left, wandered and returned."

She added: "He's like a father to me. A second father. And parents forgive their children."

Trofimov said that their first meeting was extremely emotional.

"That moment was very difficult, even dramatic. Then, on March 8, she returned to our home with her parents and we finally decided to work together again."

"At the first training session, there was a feeling that she had never actually left. Exactly that feeling at the training session, respect for the coach," he said.

"It was as if everything was washed away, as if nothing had happened, and I continued to work with her like that."

Isinbayeva and Trofimov have an exceptionally close bond, she said.

"We work without any snags. In full understanding, in complete mutual respect. He's a professional, he's a great coach and I'm happy to do what he tells me."

"Sometimes we don't even need to speak. I understand him from syllables, from brief looks."

Isinbaeyeva will seek her third Olympic gold medal in succession in London this summer, and is also a double world outdoor championship and three-time world indoor champion.

According to Mutko, Britain, the U.S and China are the main rivals of the Russian team.

Russia’s fencer team has won the highest number of medals several weeks before the London Olympic Games.

They won 11 medals, 7–gold, 1-silver and 3-bronze at the European championship that ended in Italy. The fencers contested for 12 sets of medals.

The Russian team showed fantastic results. For one, men won all gold medals in the individual events. Alexei Chermisinov was the best in rapier. Pavel Sukhov won the gold in epee fencing. The leader of the Russian team, 28-year-old saber fencer Alexei Yakimenko won two gold medals in individual and team count and became the 10-time champion of Europe.

Russia’s female fencers won gold medals in saber and epee fencing. All the Russian female rapiers got on the podium. However, no one should overestimate this success, says main coach of the Russian fencers’ team Vladislav Pavlovich.

“For us, the most important event is the Olympics. This was the final start that allowed us to study the candidates for the Olympic team and estimate the fitness of the athletes,” Vladislav Pavlovich said.

After the European championship Russian fencers gathered to follow a rehabilitation course. Afterwards they will start final trainings at a base near Moscow. A little more than a month is left before the Olympic Games. http://english.ruvr.ru/2012_06_21/78854188/

Russia’s national Olympic team hopes to win the third place in team-events of the London Olympics. The 2012 Olympic Games will be held between the 27th of July and the 12th of August, and Britain and Germany are expected to be Russia’s main competitors.

In London, athletes will compete for 302 sets of medals in 37 sporting events. Russia has been granted a license to participate in 34 of these events. Its team will consist of about 450 athletes. The final size and composition of the Russian Olympics team will be approved on the 11th of July. According to Russian Minister of Sports and Youth Policy Vitaly Mutko, Russia anticipates winning between 20 and 30 gold medals.

“As usual, we are pinning our hopes on the traditional sports: boxing, rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming. We also have a good diving team. The average age of out athletes is 26 years. The team includes about fifty sportsmen who hold the title of “Merited Master of Sport”. Consequently, we hope that Russian athletes will be competing for the top three places,” Vitaly Mutko said.

According to the Minister, due to reasons beyond our control, Russian athletes will find difficult to compete against the Games’ favourites, U.S. and Chinese teams. However, sport tends to be unpredictable. In many respects, the success of athletes will depend on their determination, luck and of course their professionalism, says Vitaly Mutko.

“We have a very good women’s water polo team, and our handball team is also very strong. We have one of the best basketball and volleyball teams. That’s, on the whole, I hope that our athletes will do really well,” Vitaly Mutko added.

Russians are also pinning hopes on their Paralympic team, says Mutko.

“I must say that our Paralympic team looks great. In total, 182 athletes will take part in the London Paralympics Games, that’s almost twice the number of sportsmen who took part in Beijing Games. But this is not the main point. The main goal of our Paralympic team will be to promote the development of sports for people with disabilities,” Vitaly Mutko said.

According to the Minister, Russia’s Paralympic team will compete in 12 out of 20 sporting events in the Games’ programme. In the future, Russia plans to increase the number of athletes in its Paralympic team. This will become possible thanks to the creation of a network of sport centres for people with disabilities. The first multi-purpose sporting complex for people with special needs, the Oka”, which meets all the international standards, has already been opened its doors to the public.

Isinbayeva ’90 Percent Ready’ for Olympics

Yelena Isinbayeva has said she is 90 percent ready to compete at the Olympics

Pole vault world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva has said she is 90 percent ready to compete at the Olympics next month after rediscovering her love for the sport.

Isinbayeva set a new indoor world record of 5 meters 1 centimeter in Stockholm in February, her first record since 2009 following a spell marked by injury and disappointing results.

“At the moment, I’m 90 percent ready,” she said, adding that she still had to “make some corrections”.

“I’m confident that I’ll have enough time to prepare.”

The Russian’s charge to retain her 2008 Olympic title follows a time in which she fell out of love with pole vaulting for a while, Isinbayeva said.

“I really had some problems with motivation some time ago. But then I realized how many great things I’ve done and still can do.”

“Now I take pleasure from training. I train twice a day. I run, I jump, I do gymnastics.”

Isinbayeva is focusing the full force of her new-found self-belief on winning the gold medal in London, she said.

“It’s my main aim. I’ll do everything possible and impossible to win.”

Her challengers for the pole vault title include Britain’s Holly Bleasdale, who secured her place at the Olympics on Sunday.

Isinbayeva has said previously she will retire in 2013 after Moscow hosts the athletics world championships.

Her world outdoor record stands at 5 meters 6 centimeters, set in 2009.
