Here we go. Serena lieing through her teeth again. The fat cow is burned out. It was only a matter of time before her bulk caught up with her. She is about as fit as me...and I suffer from bronchitis. There was no doubt in my mind that she couldn't hold it together through this tournament and there was no way she was going to go down to Maria if she had made it to the Final. Now she's telling us that she has had back problems for months. Normally she would have pulled out of any tournaments before she even started them if it were true. I dont buy her bullshit..never have. It is a problem with these mandatory tournaments... you need a doctors note to pull out and, if necessary, allow and independant examination by a doctor appointed by the WTA. Having said that, Maria has had her share of fake aches and pains in the past...pulling out of a tournament prior to the Semis against Petrova a few years ago because of a mysterious pain in her leg which caused her to pull out of the Rogers Cup in Canada the following week...but the pain was mysteriously gone a day later. Strange that. She was just coming off two tournaments back to back as well. Back then all you had to do is say you are fatigued and you got a sick note. Maria was so fatigued in Paris last year, after she withdrew, that she barely had the strength to do the rounds of the New York fashion shows, but she managed it anyway.

Anyway here's the transscript of Serena's BS:

: Serena – First question . What happened and when did you realise that you were not going to play today?
WILLIAMS: I had some problems with the lower back earlier this week – it was feeling a little stiff and I don’t think this is the right moment to force…..
Q: What are you thinking about all of the things that are coming up in next months?
WILLIAMS: There is a huge schedule coming up and with a little pain you can't…. you just want to compensate and I have had a long treatment for the last couple months …….. and so I just want to relax and get ready for next few months. I had a really great time ……
Q: You suffered an injury and had to pull out in Cincinnati. Is this similar to that and is this going to affect your preparation for the French Open.
WILLIAMS: I feel fine. Its just with a lot coming up and this is a good week to get better and I'm confident that I'll be 100%.
Q: Yesterday was quite a short match. If Flavia hadn't retired and you had to play a full match would you have retired yesterday.
WILLIAMS: I would have played to see how I felt towards the end of the match and depends on how my back was doing towards the end of the match.
Q: Do you think this problem is related to the special conditions in Madrid?
WILLIAMS: Not at all. Its just life and playing a lot and the body is just getting used to playing a lot of matches and that’s all.
Q: On the injury side your form has been as spectacular. You could have equalled your best ever run if you had ever played today. How do you feel apart form that with the long slog ahead.
WILLIAMS: It feels good and I feel my form is good and hopefully I will be able to do good and stay in form and do well.
Q: Do you have plans for today and tomorrow here in Rome.
WILLIAMS: I love Rome and I might stay today and tomorrow. I mean, I meant to play – I mean to take a day or a couple of day off. I don't have any plans. I don't have any plans because my plans were to play tennis

First, Maria Sharapova has a very good chance to win the Roma Tournament again.

Second, I am not surprised by Serena Williams injury, after a very long rest, she wanted to win all tournaments, physically it is not possible.

Third, I would like to congratulate Masha with her victory today.

Serena withdraws from Rome semi with back injury

AP - Saturday, May 19, 2012

ROME (AP)—Serena Williams withdrew from the Italian Open with a lower back injury shortly before she was scheduled to meet French Open champion Li Na in the semifinals on Saturday.

Williams said the problem also affected her earlier this week.

''It was feeling a little stiff and I don't think this is the right moment to force (it),'' she said. ''I just want to relax and get ready for the next few months.''

The withdrawal comes eight days before the French Open, but Williams said the move was mainly precautionary and that she'll be ready for the clay-court major.

''This is a good week to get better and I'm confident that I'll be 100 percent,'' she said.

The decision ended Williams' winning streak at 17 matches. She had won consecutive titles in Charleston, South Carolina, and Madrid, plus two matches in Fed Cup.

In the Rome final, Li will face either defending champion Maria Sharapova or 11th-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany, who were playing later.

The men's semifinals feature five-time Rome champion Rafael Nadal against fellow Spaniard David Ferrer and top-ranked Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer.

Several other players are also nursing injuries.

Fourth-ranked Andy Murray skipped last week's Madrid Open with a back problem and said it was still affecting him after a three-set loss to Richard Gasquet in the third round this week.

Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was bothered by an abdominal injury in a three-set loss to Kerber in the quarterfinals. And Italy's Flavia Pennetta retired with a right wrist injury while trailing Williams 4-0 in the first set Friday

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.

Weather forecast is not looking very good for Maria. Rain is on the way. I hope she can play the final and does not have to wait till Monday to play the match. Conditions will be in favor of Li Na, as the court will be slowwwww.

Sharapova sympathizes with Serena

"Maria Sharapova sympathizes with Serena Williams’s decision to pull out of her semifinal in Rome against Li Na as a precautionary measure not to further injure her sore back ahead of Roland Garros.

"It's tough and in terms of Serena playing six matches in matches in eight days and only one day off coming here and its difficult to play and when you have five or six matches because she didn't have a bye," Sharapova told reporters. "It is challenging and so in a week or so with the French Open. I was in her position also here and it’s a tough because you get yourself into that position and you just want to be healthy. You have a additional big event and with the French Open in a week's time then Wimbledon and then the Olympics and then the US Open – like, 4 Grand Slams in a row back to back and not getting scared and just monitoring how you feel and not over do it. Some people can play more and some less." "

Come on Maria... you aint so sad about Serena... ;)

Did you guys see what Maria said about Vika pulling out?? So much bitchiness between them, I LOVE IT.

Like what she said about Vika after winning Stuttgart "It's a shame Vika was extremely injured today" LOL, ahhh Maria ;)

@Valk - She so isn't sad about Serena pulling out, more like "I hope you stay out and never come back." Even though it's pretty clear there is large mutual respect between the two. Serena's probably even more upset that she couldn't bully Sharapova around and avenge Venus.

Anyway, this week has been great; Maria has been getting better with ever match! I was a bit skeptical after her performance against Mchale (who played amazing mind you).

Her last three performances have been superb, and that backhand is on fire. I would even go as far to say it's the best backhand on tour right now, with Li, Vika and Serena close behind.

Lastly, is Kvitova suffering from 'Ivanovic' Sydndrome?

Masha Sharapova told us the truth and the dual between Masha and Serena is not over.

I would like to remember that for a human being is impossible to win all tournaments successively without a physical trouble. It can be tiredness or an injury. In the case of Serena, it is an injury.

I will add that it is better for Serena not to play the Roland Garros tournament this year with this injury because she can have a serious trouble with her back.

As Masha defeated recently Na Li in Miami, Masha has a psychological advantage on her Chinese opponent. But any match is special and each player should be careful.

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.

Great wins! and I was dancing in the street this morning when I woke up and found Serena had pulled out, though I do think she will be much harder to beat if they meet at RG. Impressive stuff against Venus and Kerber though and I think she can take this title again, though the weather isn't looking great, though on my app it says that it shouldn't start to raining until after 3:00 pm local time, so come on Maria make it quick will ya???
Best of Luck and DAVAI Masha!!! You can do this!!! You go girl!

Looks like they backed the rain off until the evening now on the hourly forecast, though there could be showers. Court will definitely be slow though, which will favor Li Na. Off to bed now and when I get up the match will be starting!!!
Masha is my #1!!

Maria will have to stay focused, be aggressive and come to the net more to beat Li. I know she can do it as she beat her the last time they met. Easily.

Come on, Maria let's see you hold the trophy again!

A very interesting article. It says a lot about Maria, a true champion . Fighting hard to get to the top. Look at her in 2009 and 2010. Back from injury and 15 to 20 double faults per match. She NEVER gave up and is in an other final today.

What happened in this match is UNREAL... in every way possible.

At one point you saw Maria performing so bad that you just couldnt watch because she was being destroyed. Down 4-0 in the second most of the world thought that this is pretty much a done deal. Everyone, except Maria it seems. How the hell she turned this around is beyond me... I dont know how she does it... her serve might be crap, her groundstrokes and unforced errors might also be crap, but she definetely has WILL and SPUNK.

Down 4-0 Maria completely transformed. She reminded me of that girl who played Serena and she wasnt intimidated she wasnt afraid. She was relaxed. And then Li lost the next 8 ( EIGHT) games. Li couldnt believe what was happening and she lost her composure. So set number 2 became a Maria thing.

Then came set 3 and Maria was still in control. Up 4-1 everyone thought that Maria pretty much has sealed the match. And yet Li Na emerged as Maria did in the second set and brought the game back into her favor. She even had match points, and yet Maria still DENIED her the win.

Then the rain came at the most ridiculous point of the match, in the tie breaker. And when the rain finally stoped Maria came back and won the match. I extremely happy. Not because of how Maria played but because she showed her fighting spirit in FULL FORCE tonight. We can say what we want about her game but i think we all need to admit her fighting spirit is commendable.

Maria, my hat is off to you. Congradulations! :)
