The Russian national weightlifting team has scored a stunning victory in the team count at the European Weightlifting Championship in Antalya (Turkey).

Altogether, Russian weightlifters have won 11 medals, including 5 golds. As regards female weightlifters, the gold winners are Oksana Slivenko in the up 69 kg category, Olga Zubova in the up 75kg category, and Tatyana Kashirina – in the over 75 kg category. Men have performed excellently in the most prestigious categories: up to and over 105 kg, President of the Russian Weightlifting Federation Sergei Syrtsov says.

"As regards the points, Russia’s female team ranks first, Turkey – second, and Poland – third. All our girls are medal winners: they have taken 3 third places, one second place and 3 first places. And now a few words about male weightlifters. A Moldovan weightlifter in on the top of the podium, a Russian weightlifter is on the second step of the podium, and a Turkish representative – on the third step of the podium."

Of course, the competitions in Turkey are analyzed with a view to the London 2012 Olympic Games. Probably believing that it would be good for their leading weightlifters to summon their strength, their chief coaches have decided that it would be good for the so-called second echelon weightlifters to represent national teams. For example, Oleg Chen was the only one in the Russian team from the main lineup in the up to 69 kg category, and as regards female weightlifters, only legendary Oksana Slivenko was from the main lineup. Although Chen unexpectedly suffered the initial weight loss, he showed the best result in spurt – 158 kilograms. The previously mentioned failure has made it impossible for the Russian weightlifters to take the lead over the Moldovan team.

And still, the competitions in Turkey have shown that the Russian team had a good reserve. Svetlana Cheremshanova in the up to 53 kg category put the first – bronze – medal in the Russian medal-box. Experts praise highly the success of Tatyana Kashirina in the over 75 kg category. Kashirina, who has again become the European champion, has set two world records among the juniors, Sergei Syrtsov says.

"She has made an attempt to beat her own “adult” record. Although for different reasons her efforts proved a failure, we can say that she had felt it. I think everything will be good at the Olympic Games."

At the moment, it is very hard to say whether the winners of the European Weightlifting Championship will go to the 2012 London Olympic Games because the selection of the candidates will be carried out based on the results of the Russian championship in Saransk. However, both coaches and experts are sure that Oksana Slivenko and Tatyana Kashirina will go there.
