I think there are two extra personnel there. I don't make out Petrova at all.

from left: Unknown (does not really look like Nadia)  Masha, Kuzi, Unknown tall blonde, Katya Makarova on right.

They are not unknown Paul. Those are Vesnina and Petrova.

Thanx, Cleo. So, Vesnina is the 5th girl. I can make her features out now. I didn't realoze Nadia is that tall, and it looks like she lightened her hair.

Dunno. Dartagnan generally finds those.

All will be in Russian, of course.

Glad that Maria won the first match for Russia. She didn't play her best. I thought she looked tired but managed to score 6-2, 6-1. Second set was lot easier as I think the Spanish girl ran out of steam and Maria stepped up a gear. All in all, good start for Russia.

Fed Cup Day 1: Russia 2-0

Posted on February 4, 2012

Russia are leading Spain 2-0 on the first day of the Fed Cup World Group I tie at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow.

Maria gave Russia their first point in the tie as she defeated Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-2 6-1. After an early exchange of breaks, Maria won four consecutive games in the first set and four more in the second. Maria closed the match on her first match point with a unreturnable forehand winner.

In the next match Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3 6-1.

There will be three matches on Sunday and Russia only need to win one to advance to the semis in April.  Maria will play Suarez Navarro in the first match which will begin at 14.00 local time. (10:00 GMT)

I won't be able to watch the match live tomorrow. Wish Maria best of luck. Here's video of Maria practising in Moscow and being interviewed in English. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7Wuuz6jrhg

Why did Petrova replace Sharapova? Petrova just got hammered by Spain....mistake to let her sit out of match.

She's fine. Like she said, didn't feel 100 percent (under the weather) and she probably didn't want to risk putting on a bad show and losing her match. Just taking precautions so she doesn't get anymore sick. As you people have already noticed, she is still in the Paris tournament and has a draw. She has a bye (number one seed) so that gives her 2 days from now to recover.

Integrity is the best policy.

All worked out. Russia won the tie & Masha and Nadia are now fully qualified for London in the summer.

There will be another tie versus Serbia in April, when Shamil can qualify Vesnina & Kiri. He will then have eight qualified olimpionikas. He can only take six women, so you see, the Olympic Team Russia will be injury-proof

...and the Spaniards' weakened team won two rubbers, so Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario feels good about coming to Moscow, and that is important. (Spain, like Italy, continue to defy the Yanks & support the Kremlin Cup.)

Today wasn't pretty & not real good, but it was, alrogether.... pretty good. ;)

On the Home page she said she watched the matches from the locker room because she was feeling under the weather, but wasn't she seen on camera with the team in the Arena. That girl is telling little white lies again. All in all it was a pretty messy weekend. Not a convincing show for the Russian Team at all. They are going to have to do better than that. Just scratching through is just not good enough. They need to be convincing.

Speaking of "little wihte ones",  " I was under the weather today so had to watch most of the matches in the locker room." MOST, Philli, not "all".

Why do they need to be "convincing", Philli?  Because MSM (spell out "mainstream media" in case you're behind the curve on acronyms--we were in the 5th week of Occupy before I snapped to that one)

because MSM demands it?

Are the Yanks convincing? Gimme a break.  Nobody is convincing unless the effing bank boardrooms order the press to brand them that. "Convincing isn't even a legit sports notion--it's media cutesy-talk.
