We Are The Many - Makana

MUSIC VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xq3BYw4xjxE

Singer crashes Obama summit with 'Occupy' song

A popular Hawaiian recording artist turned a top-security dinner ofPacific Rim leaders hosted by President Barack Obama into a subtle protest with a song in support of the "Occupy" movement.

Makana, who goes by one name, was enlisted to play a luau, or Hawaiian feast, Saturday night for leaders assembled in Obama's birthplace Honolulu for an annual summit that is formulating plans for a Pacific free-trade pact.

But in the midst of the dinner on the resort strip Waikiki Beach, he pulled open his jacket to reveal a T-shirt that read "Occupy with Aloha," using the Hawaiian word whose various meanings include love and peace. He then sang a marathon version of his new song "We Are The Many."

"I was pretty nervous. In fact I was terrified. I kept thinking 'what are the consequences going to be?'" Makana, 33, told AFP.

"It was incredibly comical. I was terrified but also enjoying it," he said.

Makana, who was born Matthew Swalinkavich, said the song prompted awkward stares from a few of those present but the Obamas appeared too absorbed with their guests to notice what was happening.

The performance occurred at a dinner for summit participants from 21 economies around the Asia-Pacific, including Chinese President Hu Jintao and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, amid a security lockdown in Waikiki.

As Makana sang, about 400 protesters including anti-globalization and native Hawaiian rights activists staged a protest march toward the dinner site but turned back after encountering the smothering security.

Makana released the song on the Internet the day before and decided to play it at the urging of fans, he said.

Inspired by the anti-capitalist movement that began with the "Occupy Wall Street" demonstrations in New York, it denounces Washington politicians, corporate greed and what he sees as an unfair American economic system.

The song features the refrain, "We’ll occupy the streets, we’ll occupy the courts, we’ll occupy the offices of you, till you do the bidding of the many, not the few."

He sang it "over and over" for 40 minutes, varying his tempo and delivery to avoid triggering an overt reaction.

"Whenever I felt the heat might come down, I would ease off. It was a very careful procedure," he said.

Our brothers, sisters, and comrades in New York, Oakland & other cities had their "freedoms" stomped on by their own government last night. Call on all Occupy supporters everywhere to show solidarity. This movement will not be terrorized into going away.

The actions in NYC were those of a despot - cloaked in darkness, surprise, militarized stormtroops, no press, no warning and hardly a thin veneer of "legality" to evict. Some say actions not worthy of America. Shame on Bloomberg and his stormtroops!

Our friends across the Maghreb will find these images tame--and they may be, SO FAR. Do not be fooled. These thugs in blue are fundamentally the same as Mubarak's. It is only a question of how soon their masters will order a deadly attack.

Unfortunately, this IS the Amerika I know, the face against which John Reed, Jack London & other chroniclers of the people's struggle warned for a century & more. Now a new generation sees what lurks behind the Yankee mask. "Class war" has come again to the USA.

DEMOCRATY FROM THE USA. WHAT DO PEOPLE WANT TO LIVE HAPPILY???

THE REALITY IN THE USA.  AT LEAST PEOPLE TELL US THE TRUTH ABOUT INJUSTICE.

http://occupywallst.org/

Occupy Wall Street (OWS) is an ongoing series of demonstrations beginning in New York City's Zuccotti Park in the Wall Street financial district. The park was occupied consistently from September 17th to November 15th, 2011 when police evicted the protestors after almost two months [5]. The movement was initiated by Canadian activist group Adbusters[6] and has since developed into a series of movements worldwide. The participants are mainly protesting social and economic inequality, corporate greed, corruption and influence over government—particularly from the financial services sector—as well as lobbyists and the jobless rate. The protesters' slogan "We are the 99%" refers to the growing difference in wealth and income growth in the U.S. between the wealthiest 1% and the rest of the population.

See what I mean--what's this shit?  We "don't do this in Amerika". Yeah, right.

NEW YORK — Journalists have been detained by police while covering Occupy Wall Street protests in New York.

Associated Press writer Karen Matthews was taken into custody Tuesday along with AP photographer Seth Wenig (WEH-nig) and Daily News reporter Matthew Lysiak.

When they were detained, they were covering protests at a property in lower Manhattan hours after police cleared a park of the main Occupy encampment.

Wall Street Journal reporter Alison Fox saw Matthews and Lysiak being placed in handcuffs. Another AP reporter later saw Matthews and Wenig being removed in a police van.

Freelance radio journalist Julie Walker says she was arrested on disorderly conduct.

Police didn't have a count of how many journalists were arrested and didn't immediately comment.

Two journalists were briefly detained Sunday during an Occupy raid in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Stay chill, Tiger. Violence is not needed. They do not dare to confront this...

Oakland/Berkeley:

Protesters have voted to pitch tents Tuesday night at UC Berkeley. Other Occupy encampments throughout the Bay Area remain peaceful Tuesday.

8:40 PST At least six tents pitched at Sproul Plaza, people on building rooftops

UC Berkeley students, alumni and community members -- possibly as many as 5,000 people -- are gathered on Sproul Plaza for the Mario Savio Lecture series with UC Berkeley public policy professor and former U. S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, who is preparing to speak. Several older alumni have joined the crowed to hear Reich speak.

About six tents have been set up in the middle of the audience following the general assembly's vote to re-occupy Cal. Some people have taken to the rooftops of Cal buildings, but no problems have been reported so far.

Early this morning, police cleared a small offshoot of the Occupy San Francisco camp. UC Berkeley protesters are expected to join Occupy SF for a downtown rally and march this afternoon. About 20 tents are pitched at Sproul Plaza from overnight and protesters have asked for a dialogue with university officials.

2:35 p.m.: BofA officials sign paperwork for an order for police to disperse crowd

About 2:30, bank managers asked everyone to leave and they were shouted down.

Protesters were running around the bank, standing on desks and writing "Occupy Bank of America" on bank calendars, chanting, "Whose bank, our bank."

One man, Mike Ahmadi, from Livermore, came in to deposit a check from his business but there were no tellers so managers wouldn't take his check.

"I'm a satisfied customer of Bank of America, but I must be the exception to the rule,'' he laughed. When asked is he supports the protesters, he said.

There are still about 100 people in the bank.

2:30 p.m.: Protesters 'occupy' BofA lobby

About 100 protesters are literally occupying the lobby at Bank of America at 50 California St., as most employees have fled from the area.

"Now they see how to evacuate the camp," said Occupy protester Stand 42 Life.

The group is pounding on drums, and some protesters are dancing on the counters. One officer is in the lobby, taking a report from the bank manager.

1:20 p.m.: San Francisco protesters begin to march

Protesters, including students and a strong union presence, are beginning to march, blocking traffic as they cross Embarcadero in front of the Ferry Building (where a gourmet lunch crowd is dining). Protesters are heading down the Embarcadero heading in the direction towards Fisherman's Wharf. Police are now redirecting traffic to allow the march. The people eating outside the Ferry Building are taking photos will their cell phones.

The line of protesters, cheering and hoisting Occupy signs, extends about a half mile filled with perhaps a few thousands people.

At 1:30 p.m. the thousands of protesters hung a left onto Broadway from The Embarcadero and continued their chants and drumming. Police continued to redirect traffic to allow them safe passage.

At least 75 people have been arrested in New York as hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protesters attempted to march on the New York Stock Exchange, the BBC repoprts.

At a rally to mark two months of protest, police blocked streets and protesters massed at junctions on the edge of the city's financial district. Scuffles broke out, with police dragging some protesters away.

Similar protests are planned across the US, two days after police cleared a camp in Zuccotti Park in Manhattan.
