From the article Tiger posted above:

Quote:
"I hit a serve and then landed awkwardly on my left ankle. I felt a sharp pain and next thing I knew I was on the floor," Sharapova said in a statement.

"It swelled up immediately and I knew there was no way I could continue.

"I am incredibly disappointed and in a lot of pain. I obviously really wanted to win and felt that I was playing well.

"There's not much more I can say right now. I'm sorry for the tournament and my Japanese fans that the match had to end this way."

Kvitova, who claimed her first grand slam title by beating Sharapova in June's Wimbledon final, described her withdrawal as "sad."

"Because we played very nice tennis, I think, and it was a great match," she said.

"I'm very sorry about her, because the ankle swollen was too big straight away. Hopefully, nothing it's bad and she will be back early."

The part where she says she is in a lot of pain.... :(

Well it's sad to see Maria retiring from a match. I think from the interview, Petra said it really looks bad or has swollen. Hope it's just a sprain and will heal in a week or two.

Hope she can participate in one more warm up tournament before YEC, like entering in GENERALI LADIES LINZ!

Well, hope Maria recovers fast. She looks good in her match against Petra. Looking really sharp.

I did injured my ankle when I was around 16 yrs old. It swelled really bad, just as bad as I twisted it. It was really awful and the swollen part got bigger. But after 2 days, the "lump" was gone, but the pain was still there. After a week, it was healed as if nothing happened. I think Maria is on the same case just as mine. :D

I'm not being too positive her guys, but that's what I really think. So maybe after a week, she'll be in practice courts again.

This injury reminded me of her quarterfinal match at Miami. Same thing happened, after she served, she split stepped and twisted it.

Praying for Maria's fast recovery!

Ai! Sugiyama-sama!

Look who just brought me an ice compression machine at 11pm for my ankle...Thank you Ai!!

(For the real newbies: Sugiyama is a recently retired Japanese tennis star--has a major academy & numerous other businesses in Japan. Ai was very visible watching Masha's match.)

Another video about Masha's injury: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPy6vVnWtt8

This year it is the second time, Masha has this kind of accident on the court but the last time she continued to play and won the match. We have to check her shoes, may be there are no so confortable?

As she can still walk, she has a chance to recover quickly. Let's hope it.

It is a chance for Kvitova, she is going to continue to play in Toyko. !!!!!!!!

Y'know, a tennis girl sprains her ankle late in the season. Except it's Maria, it wouldn't even be news.

Just saying... no call to awfulize it.

Thanx for the vids!

Update from Maria's Facebook, it's great news thankfully and she seems in good spirits:)

"Hi everyone! Good news is that the mri showed no big damage in the ankle. Will do my best to recover in time for Istanbul. It better recover soon because I can become quite the annoying patient! I will keep everyone posted with my progress."

Istanbul is in Turkey. It is a good place for a rest. Many famous athletes go there for holidays such as Sasha Ovechkin who were in Turkey this summer.

Great news about the MRI scan. Although it is not certain that the ankle will be 100% for instanbul, it is good news that the worst has come to pass. Get well soon Maria, as I said before, tough luck only makes us stronger!

Not a pleasing sight, but here is the end of the match between Kvitova and Maria with the injury. I am so glad Kvitova looked interested and worried about Maria. Nice sportsmanship there!

It's so lucky that Maria did say 'Hi everyone! Good news is that the mri showed no big damage in the ankle. Will do my best to recover in time for Istanbul.
It better recover soon because I can become quite the annoying patient! I will keep everyone posted with my progress.'
It's like she's really fine now. God blesses her!
