I'm still expecting her in an hour & a half from now. So do the webcasters.

Maria without a little drama is just not Maria! :)

But still she played well. The first set was great, dominating. Second set was sloppy at parts, even though Maria started strong with 3-0. Then she had a slump and the UE number begun to rise. Still in the end she broke back and won.

A good win, what I noticed is that her serve was very very strong. 7 aces and only 4 double faults, although they were at crucial parts of the game. Still her serve was very good. Its her UE number that needs to stay down and her composure to stay strong the entire match. Maria relaxed after 3-0 in the second set and she almost payed dearly for it.

So good result, and lets hope we can improve and continue even better in this tournament!

Davai Maria! :)

PS: Highlights of the game + other goodies coming up soon as always. :)

QFT.

I was a little worried in the middle of 2nd set but then she started playing "more seriously".The important thing is she seems a lot more confident than last year in this time, also UE's and DF's were very few.

P.S. I've been registered for a long time but it's my 1st post, hi everyone. :P

Welcome!

Indeed Maria is much better than last year. And if she keeps going like that we could see her playing one of her best seasons ever! Next year is going to be tough though! She has a lot of defending to do. But if she does well in AO... she could come up no1 again! :) Davai! :D

:pioggia: Rain delays Monday create a packed schedule for Tuesday, 27 September 2011

http://www.toray-ppo.co....t/pdf/2011wtaii_oop6.pdf

That granted, I'm still looking around at this Zvonareva business. Dark court assignments plus the failure to place Duko's name on the draw just seem a tad odd to me. Similar with Maria's probable next opponent, Julia Görges.

Recall that the Toray placed ALL Russians (not counting Vika) on the same side of the draw

It was good to see Maria competing again and looking good. She needed that challenge in the second set to get more practice. She slacked and her opponent improved so we had a bit of drama!!

I would prefer that Maria wins a GS to become no.1 than merely by points. Adds credibility to her ranking. Even though she is ranked No.2 now I don't feel it makes much difference to when she was No.5.

I watched the match live this morning. There was something wrong with Maria. I could tell by her facial expressions. She was just not feeling good. I've never seen her looking like that before. Possibly she is having 'that time of the month', because she certainly seemed to be in some kind of internal pain. And, at the end when she walked back onto the court to wave and smile at the crowd...the instant she turned away from them, her smiled disappeared instantly and she looked ill again, as though the smile was forced. Hehehehe, one other thing, she only wiped her nose with the back of her hand once, then didn't know what to do with it. Maybe she or somebody has read what I've written about her unladylike habit of wiping it on her chin and she is aware of it now and she has stopped doing it....after 7 years.

Get well Maria, get that confused face back like you normally have when things dont go right.

I'm sure you're sincere, sag. Indeed, I myself am relatively indifferent where Masha ranks in the top ten (including number one itself). Too much is made of that stuff.

But I gotta argue the proposition that slams and a #1 conditioned by slams are all that matter. In the States, we know that philosophy will lose all traction the instant that sisters are outta the picture for good.

Just like the Yanks were ready to abolish Davis Cup, soon as they were facing relegation.

In the Olympic Year, IMO we must affirm that runner-ups DO matter. Silver & Bronze matter as well as Gold. In 2012, the obsessions of the tennis bosses will come into open conflict with global values. Tiime to get ready, 'cause it's gonna get ugly. :ninja:

Actually, Philli, I think she was pissed. I said as much in the Shoutbox. Dunno--there were whiffs of a possible conflict over scheduling. Or just the bad weather. But it may go deeper.

Mandy Minella was happy when she bested Kimiko. Everyone else we saw had their panties in a knot. I saw Barb Wired make a perfunctory effort to even the first set with JJ (who was less than enthused herself), then not give that much of a damn. Hell, Barb didn't even care enough to go off real good.

Testimonials aside, Tokyo does not seem a happy place this year. Well, duh.

Ugly ugly UGLY match....

I was praising Maria's serve the other day and now it was all over the place...also the UE number went up up UP.

Maria was very frustrated at the end...she didnt even smile when she was waving at the crowd and hitting those autographed balls. And she never does that. I am sure she was angry with herself, which is of course normal and was apparent during the match.

But at least she fought hard, she never got despared and she kept going. She played those important tiebreak points like she was supposed to.

Like we discussed in shoutbox, Maria has learned how to tick when she has her back against a wall. And thats a good thing. Most people when they are facing situations like that they choke. Maria seems to thrive in these conditions. But Maria must stop putting herself her back against the wall in almost every single match. Its not her opponent who is doing this to her its herself.

Nevertheless a win is a win as I always say. Next up is Kvitova, in a Wimbledon final rematch. Maria needs to step up her game and take her "revenge"! Davai Maria! :) :D

I agree, she seemed pissed off even when she was throwing balls at the crowd, but i prefer to see her like that than when she has a sad "almost crying" look in her eyes. I hope she'll be more determined to win against Kvitova.
Anyway, talking about the usual DF's and UE's the first set wasn't bad, but she did way too many in the second.

She already looked PISSED during her first match as Philli & Paul(both fine pissed-off observers:)

noticed. Don't think it's the game, she already stood before those fires. Whatever, she's in the

quarters and can win this stuff. Just be patient, we'll see it all from the frontseat:)
