Great for having Maria back to 2nd, but why there is such a huge difference in the rank pts between Maria and Caroline?

3109 is the difference. But the thing is, Maria will earn points in TOKYO, which is her next event. Only if she does well in Tokyo and Beijing, she might end the year as number 2. :D

Like Safina & JJ before her, Caro's points/ranking are sustained by contending well at a LARGE number of Tour events. That can be achieved by a young champion who has yet to experience significant injury. (Something to be noted re those occasions she's fallen to the court screaming bloody murder. lol)

Yes, it does seem strange that Maria has catapulted to the Number 2 spot, since she also lost points at the USO as well by going out a round earlier than she did last year. But, with Kim loosing 2000 points for a no-show and Vera and Viki also losing points as well, she automatically moved up. Strange how it all works...Number 2 and not won a GS since Jan 08, three and a half years ago. Still, the chances of catching The Woz this year are remote to say the least, and Maria is not up to competing at the same level of Caroline who can and does regularly Back to Back tournaments. Still there is a bright side...Byes in all tournaments.

I won't be surprised when Sharapova will be N°1. She is a clever girl EVEN if she has not won her second Wimbledon GS this year.

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.

I think Maria should play one more tournament this year to insure the #2 at the end of the year.

She will likely end the year as #2 because she will earn extra points at the Year end Championships. She can also play an extra tournament before the end of the year.

She has a lot of defending to do next year, but certainly no2 in the world is sure gonna give her some boost. She had, no matter how you look at it, a very successfull year. Yes she still has her ups and downs and that is what's keeping her from having an exceptional year. But she is no rookie she knows what must be done. And now it is the time to do it! :)

Fed Cup - Zvonareva to lead Russia in Fed Cup final
Thu, 15 Sep 12:12:00 2011

World number four Vera Zvonareva will lead Russia in November's Fed Cup final against the Czech Republic.

The Russians also named 16th-ranked Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Svetlana Kuznetsova (world number 19) and Ekaterina Makarova (world number 43) for the tie at the Olympic indoor arena in Moscow on 5-6 November.

Captain Shamil Tarpishchev has relied on the same team that crushed Italy 5-0 in the semi-finals in April.

"We have decided to go with the same line-up as had played against Italy because these girls have developed good team spirit and camaraderie," said Tarpishchev.

"I think they have shown they are really want to play on the same team and help each other."

Russia will be bidding for their fifth Fed Cup title since 2004, while the Czechs are looking for their first since splitting from Slovakia in 1993

Hey, Philli. I'm in the Shoutbox.

It has always been an option to play Masha in the first 2012 tie. Given her chronic bad luck in Moscow, that makes sense. The site of the first 2012 tie (against Spain) is also Olympic Stadium:

Re Vera, though, tough schedule. Zvonareva is now scheduled to play Fed Cup, Kremlin Cup & the YEC--thanx to WTA, those all effectively conflict.

It's a pity that Maria lost in 3rd round in Us Open against Pennetta. She had a good draw in the road to final, and now she would be very close to Wozniacki......
