Clijsters's withdrawal will affect the seeding for the 2011 tournament as each seeded player will move up one spot, helping Marion Bartoli the most as she will become the No. 8 seed and have a first round bye.

Additional player withdrawals from the women's field include Dominka Cibulkova, Kaia Kanepi and Alexandra Dulgheru. These withdrawals have allowed Ekaterina Makarova, Tamira Paszek, Lucie Hradecka and Anabel Medina Garrigues to join the WTA field.

The main draws for the Western & Southern Open will be made at 6 p.m. Friday.

In about 30 minutes, but I don't know how quick they'll post it.

I'm not gonna put a very high expectation on Maria right now. And I have no backup plan either...so I'm just gonna wait and see or should I say I'll go with the flow for now.

At a glance, the Cincy draw is crooked as a dog's hind leg. Check it out:

http://assets.usta.com/assets/663/15/WTA_MDS.pdf

It's the usual threadbare, transparent WTA scenario: Serena cake-walked to "draw" in the Round of 16, guess who?  Why, Li Na, of course, who will tank & roll over for her like she always has before--sending Serena thru to meet Masha in the quarterfinal. Despite the presence of Masha & Kuzi in this quarter (shades of last year), this is NOT the Russian Quarter.

The Russian Quarter is below, self-eliminating Vera Z, Makarova, Vesnina & Pavlyuchenkova. If Masha beats Serena, she may be obliged to then take out the remaining top Russian in the semis.

In which case, the last remaining hope of Western Civilization would channel down to Princess. L-O-f'n-L!

Good Morning, Paul. My thoughts entirely, The WTA criminal minds are showing through again. And you were right about Toronto. Guess who has the evening match in the Semis? There is another side to what is happening here though. Both Maria and Serena are doing back to back tournaments and then going into the the USO with just a one week break. They've never done that before. This is uncharacteristic for both of them. Maria's tennis has already begun to deteriorate to an embarrassinly low level after only a few rounds and it can only be a matter of time before Serena implodes; she hasn't worked a schedule like this since 2008. If she wins Toronto it will put her up to around 30 in the rankings and, so, a seed for the USO.

Frankly, I'm finding it very hard to actually enjoy watching tennis these days, something is wrong in the state of Denmark... hehehehe, oh a pun, By the way did you notice..Caro was up 5-1, Her dickhead dad had to come on and yell at her and she promptly lost the next 6 games and the match. Stupid Polack.

Maria is in the better half of the draw ! With that I also expect better results then last week. Maria can loose a lot of point, as she was in this horrible final last year. The moment I see dark clouds coming, I will switch off my tv !!

Why is Maria always drawn in the same quarter as Serena?? Ok, she didn't get to play her in Toronto but that's not the point. Definitely something fishy going on. I hope Vika kicks her butt tonight. Past 2 matches she had lost one set hopefully third time unlucky to win 2 sets.

Oh yeah.  And keep Serena in the cool of the evening, and make sure she stays on her meds, and... and... and...

Qualifying play has started in Cincy. First up on Centre Vania King vs Sania Mirza--Yaroslava Shvedova's doubles partners to self-eliminate...

But it just happens that way...

Cincy is a little taste of what's designed for USO.

I agree and I am very worried about USO, I m preparing myself for the worst, after Li Na and Kvitova won last two GS,with Caroline simply awful, with Kim injured or in bad form,we should be ready for the worst scenario, look who is in good shape now? Vika,Agnieschka,WTA will be afraid of them too,so ,expect the worst, that s for shure

I think we will not see Serena is Cincy , as too many tournaments after a long time being out is not good for the boops !

Sharapova, Blake, Isner Prep for W & S Open

Three-time Grand Slam champion and recent Wimbledon finalist Maria Sharapova, former No. 4 James Blake and two-time Tour titlist John Isner practiced on the nearly sold-out first day of Western & Southern Open action. As fans sought to catch qualifying play and join in on the Kid’s Day festivities, the WTA star took to the courts, while two of the top Americans exchanged rallies.

Sharapova, who advanced to the finals last year before losing to Kim Clijsters in three sets, is seeded fourth in the main draw. With a first-round bye, she’ll face the winner of Polona Hercog and a qualifier in the second round. Sharapova appears in the same section of the draw as French Open champion Na Li and 13-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams.
