Ye what a great game.  She had to battle it out.   One of the most consistent game with lots of winners.  She is back in form at last. It takes a lot of precision shots to win the number one player Caroline.  Tomorow is another great game but it shouldn't be difficult as this one she leads Stosur with many games.  Good luck for tomorow.  We will celebrate for sure.  Win your first tournament this year.

Game , set and racket for Maria Sharapova ! Impressive, great play, solid serve , and good concentration. Maria, watch out for the Stosur lobs, drop shots etc. Hit hard, play your game and you can win this title. Let's have a great day all of us tomoorow. By the way, a big thank you to Thomas for improving Maria's game and motivation !!

Yeah, I have to admit that it was a great adn well deserved win for Maria, Plus on CLAY!!?

But back to earth for the last match and cannot take Stosur for granted. Remember last year's result? Stosur reached the final by beating TOP clay players.

However, best of luck Maria!!

I have to say that she is showing some signs of her 2006 form. I say some, because at the moment she is not consistent. One Tournament does not make a great season. Vika would have beaten her if it were not for the Tennis Gremlins. Maria will, of course take next week off and dash off to Paris for Sponsor duties.... that's one thing she's never been bad at. Todays match should be good, if Sam doesn't choke.

Hi, Philli. I'd give a different hypothetical scenario. A close examination (see below) reveals a liklihood Masha may have won the quarterfinal. BUT, a full-on win would certainly have involved a long, intense three-setter. Ironically, you could speculate defeating Vika that way might have instead contributed to a loss to Princess the next day!

But it is what it is. Yeah, Sam Smith confirmed, "Wozniacki has not fallen off at all" during the semi, yet a fresh & focused Sharapova took her down in straight sets.

My guess is Sam Stosur will come out as she initially did against Li Na, expecting a long, grueling endurance test. That tit-for-tat play almost messed Sam up. One will see.

Oh, sure she will run off to Paris To train for RG, duh. Don't think her Tiffany earrings will detract.

I just reviewed the match again. The actual tipping point began late in the 1st after Vika bickered with the ump over a hard call. Asderaki gave Masha 25 30-15 re a complicated issue & Viki got steamed/distracted as Masha held at 54. Paranoia kicked in. I remarked on Shoutbox that Vika would freak if Masha broke. Knowing Vika, she was anxiously visualizing it slipping away from that point.

Though Masha then blew her break point & dropped the first set, momentum actually had shifted, as we saw in the 2nd before Vika jammed her elbow at 10 30-0. Thus Maria has reason to take confidence she had turned it around three games before the injury.

the rain will delay the match for some time. Now they are showing the highlights of the semis-final match against Caroline Wozniacki until the rain stops.

I can't imagine Maria if she wins the title against a player WHO REALLY LOVES clay courts like Sam Stosur. Standing ovation for Maria if she pulls this match.

Maria Sharapova: 2011 Rome Champion!

Posted on May 15, 2011

Maria has won the biggest clay title of her career today at the Internazionali BNL D'Italia in Rome today as she defeated No.6 seed Samantha Stosur of Australia 6-2 6-4 in 1 hour and 23 minutes.  Congratulations Maria!

This is Maria's 23rd career title and her 1st title of 2011.

After a rain delay of just over 3 hours, Maria came onto court firing and broke Stosur immediately in the first game and quickly broke again to lead 4-1.  After a exchange of breaks in the next 2 games, Maria held her serve to take the set 6-2.

An exchange of breaks started the second set and Maria broke Stosur to lead 3-2 and that one break advanatage was enough and on matchpoint, Maria hit a blistering forehand winner and raised her arms in triumph at the Foro Italico.

In the rankings Maria moves up to No.7 with 4761 points.

Maria will now take the next week off to prepare for the second Grand Slam of the year at Roland Garros in Paris which begins next Sunday.
