BNP Paribas Open, its sponsor a European-based bank that spends much of its marketing budget on tennis.

Last year, the tournament was purchased by billionaire Oracle founder Larry Ellison, an avid tennis fan and player. Along the way, there have been offers that would have taken the tournament to China, but Ellison's purchase most likely has ended that.

Last year's event drew a tournament-record 339,657 spectators for its 21 sessions, a slight increase over the previous year, despite the economic climate. This year's tournament will feature enhanced seating capacity on several outside show courts and the addition of the Hawkeye line-calling camera on all outside match courts.

I also posted a "buddy" request to your account.  Maybe that helped shake it loose.

So Maria is doing Indian Wells. Wonder how long she'll last this year. I wonder if Vicky has been given instructions to let Maria win tonight's clash.

Most exos I;ve seen lately have been clown-around-on-court affairs. Maria's first opponent will be Medina Garrigues or a qualifier. The last four qualies are being played now, so the possible qualifier name should be known in a few hours.

I'm far from sure Rezai will be the next opponent. Ayumi Morita has been playing well and there's a qualie possibility there too.

Hey, man.  Right now she will be in Eugene, Oregon, about to play the Nike exo with Fed, Rafa & Vika this evening. Tomorrow, she will drive down to Indian Wells--a long drive but, with the first round bye in a 10-day event, she won't play for several days.

The qualifier is Tamira Paszek. If Medina can't dismiss her, Anabel is further gone than I think--hence I presume Maria's first match will be against Medina Garrigues. Medina-Paszek are not playing today,

OP: http://www.wtatennis.com.../posting/2011/609/OP.pdf

thus Maria will play no earlier than Friday. If Saturday, a stream may be possible.

I would not be terribly surprised to see her second round match against Morita or Zhang Shuai, rather than Rezai.

DRAW: http://www.wtatennis.com...posting/2011/609/MDS.pdf

The IW women's draw is, overall, tough but fair

THAT SAID, I do believe WTA has slipped in a couple of little nasties where they thought few would notice

The repeated early-round matching of Kiri vs Chaki in multiple tournaments demands a second look. The one is ramked 26 & the other 49. No reason they should be falling this close together in tourney after tourney.

Also, there is a TARGETED WILD CARD pair in doubles: No happenstance to find Russians Vera & Kuzi deployed to take out two-Slam champs Shvedova & King in the first round.

Just saying...  Everyone knows the recent history--what considerations would so ASSIGN the Russian wildcards...?

But you are right. I've moved Vera's thread to the top of Tennis Chat.

...uh-oh. Vania King took the first set from Dulko 62.  But not--Gisela took it in three.

Saw that Ivanovic played a doubles match with Petkovic but they failed.
JJ instead was successful together with Payljuchenkova.

Yeah, I was amused at Nastia & JJ together so soon after the Monterrey final.  Good for them.

I had to use a new user name :( *sigh*

I hope her shoulder is up to it. I saw her last match on a live stream and her serve was awful. But I think Maria will be looking to make her way back up the rankings steadily.

Hey, Islander So, who were you before?

Federer, Sharapova draw a crowd for Indian Wells practice
By Bill Scott Mar 10, 2011, 1:09 GMT

Indian Wells, California - Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova drew a standing room-only crowd Wednesday as two of the most recognisable faces in the sport practised on adjoining courts as seeds prepared for their starts at the Indian Wells Masters.

The pair were fresh from an exhibition the night before in Oregon sponsored by their clothing company that also featured world number one Rafael Nadal, and a surprise appearance by John McEnroe, who is never from from a tennis spotlight.

Sharapova was ushered off to the sanctity of the player's patio and compound by a security staff after stopping following her session to sign dozens of autographs from eager fans under a baking desert sun at this resort 200 kilometers east of Los Angeles.
