Hey Liquid, I need to apologize to you for calling you a pratt. I guess winning all 4 is quite special. But, unless hell freezes over within the next 5 years, there will be very little chance that Maria will be among the elite who have done it.
Then getcha a good Russian fur coat. [H] I think Masha will focus first on London 2012, which will be on grass. But running a close second will be Roland Garros--the only one she doesn't have--thus beginning to practice more in Europe.
Congrats to Rafa! Yeah. Wrapping up my thoughts on this USO:
When rain interrupted the women's doubles, ESPN2 promised to show the conclusion on Sports Center. Figuring that might well be a big ol' lie, I made sure to view King & Shvedova's second slam championship finish & the ceremony thru USOpenLive. Sure 'nuff. Instead of that big 15-20 minutes of "wasted" air time, ESPN2 gave you 15-20 seconds: match point-yeah, they won-moving on... [:P]
The ceremonies last night were about as I'd predicted: loud proclamation the partially-filled stadium represented "the greatest tennis tournament in the world." So, you might say that's natural--but suppose you heard that from Paris or Melbourne? You'd then hear a lotta laughter--mostly from London. I'm sure you hear it now, just our media suppresses it. It's all about 2012. Maybe they fear lost Mayan codices predict the end of the Yankee sportsworld following the Olympiad? [;)]
The USTA prez proclaimed the association's 750K membership with a defiant, almost-threatening tone. This came in the context of Johnny Mac's frequent wistful reminisences of the "good old days". Y'know, that's what's behind the bravado: in spite of pathological denial & self-absorption, they KNOW very well the degree of slippage. Backers here may have trouble rationalizing an outlay beyond what they might devote to "soccer".
The BRIC nations, European & Arab bankers--get ready to make your play. Who wants to own tennis? Going once, going twice... [H]
