Good news for our Laura :)))

Battling Robson into second round

Laura Robson
Robson is competing at the Australian Open for the first time

British teenager Laura Robson got off
to a winning start in the first round of the Australian Open girls'
singles, beating Christina McHale 7-5 6-3.

Robson, 15, the 2008 junior Wimbledon champion and seeded fifth
at Melbourne Park, trailed her American opponent 3-5 but stormed back
to take the first set.

McHale broke again early in the second set but Robson won four games in a row and held off McHale to clinch victory.

She faces Thailand's Kanyapat Narattana or Sweden's Anna Brazhnikova next.

It was an impressive performance by Robson, who
showed plenty of character in what was her first appearance at the
Australian Open.

Robson had to save a series of break points against McHale, who
is 18 months her senior and ranked 347th in the women's rankings, in
the second set and, when the British player did drop her serve at 4-2,
she broke back immediately before sealing her win.

Britain's only representative in the boy's singles, James
Chaudry, faces Cheng-Peng Hsieh, the 15th seed from Chinese Taipei,
later on Monday.

Guernsey's Heather Watson won through to the second round of the girls' singles on Sunday.

Robson through in girls' singles

AUSTRALIAN OPEN

Laura Robson
Robson is trying to add the Australian title to her Wimbledon crown

Britain's Laura Robson progressed to
the last 16 of the Australian Open girls' singles with a 6-3 7-6 (7-0)
win over Kanyapat Narattana of Thailand.

The 15-year-old Londoner is trying to add the Australian title to the junior Wimbledon crown she won in 2008.

Seeded fifth in Melbourne, Robson followed up her opening win
over American Christina McHale with another straight-sets win in round
two.

Fellow Briton Heather Watson later plays South African Chanel Simmonds.

Robson beat McHale, who is 18 months her senior and ranked 347th in the women's rankings, 7-5 6-3 on Monday.

Britain's only representative in the boy's singles, James
Chaudry, was beaten 6-1 2-6 6-3 by Cheng-Peng Hsieh, the 15th seed from
Chinese Taipei, in round one.

C'mon Laura darlin' !!!!

Big Congrats to little Laura! [

Can't be too sad about Watson, in that she lost to Ksenia Pervak--rising Russian... [;)] who we can hope to see play Laura in the final... Oops! We may be on a collision course, here. [:D]

Robson reaches girls' semi-finals

AUSTRALIAN OPEN
Venue: Melbourne Park Date: 19 January-1 February
Coverage: BBC Red Button, Radio 5 Live sports extra, BBC Sport website (Red Button coverage streamed on website throughout fortnight)

Laura Robson
Robson was trailing in the second set when Bogdan retired

British teenager Laura Robson reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open girls' singles when Romanian Elena Bogdan retired from their match.

The 15-year-old fifth seed, who has yet to drop a set in the tournament, was leading 6-3 2-5 when Bogdan pulled out.

However, Guernsey's Heather Watson was beaten 6-3 7-5 by Russian third seed Ksenia Pervak.

Londoner Robson will now face top seed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn, who she beat in the 2008 Wimbledon girls' final.

Thailand's Lertcheewakarn looked in impressive form in her quarter-final, defeating Belarusian Anna Orli 6-1 6-0.

"She had an easy win against my doubles partner so that's not the best confidence boost," joked Robson.

"I maybe won't have as much advantage with my serve as I did the last time (at Wimbledon) because it skids on grass but it will be a good match."

Robson's quarter-final was halted for a medical time-out after Bogdan injured her ankle while leading 5-1 in the second set.

The Romanian returned to the court after 10 minutes, but managed just one more game before she was forced to retire.

And Robson, who was born in Melbourne, said it was the right decision to take.

"After the second set we were due to be suspended anyway (because the extreme heat policy had been invoked) so I'm sure she would have loved to have that break," said the Wimbledon junior champion.

"But to me it seemed like she couldn't even walk or serve or do anything so it would have been tough for her to play.

"It was really unlucky that it happened to her. She was really sad so I felt really bad for her."

BBC Radio 5 Live's tennis correspondent Jonathan Overend added: "Bogdan limped back to her chair but wanted to continue, as she knew if the match went to one set all, the extreme heat policy would be enforced and the players would be brought off.

"She played four more points, winning two of them, before the doctor walked onto the court and basically forced her to retire.

"Bogdan was in tears and her coach was shaking his head but she was in no position to play and for her own good it was the right decision. The doctor has the power to take such a decision if it's in the player's best interests."

Britain's only representative in the boy's singles, James Chaudry, was beaten 6-1 2-6 6-3 by Cheng-Peng Hsieh, the 15th seed from Chinese Taipei, in round one earlier in the week.

Ohhhhh crap!!!!  Laura has to play the top seed in the semi's!! [:(]  She did beat her in the Wimbly final so hopefully she can do it again, but the other girl will probably be after revenge, so I am kinda worried! [:S]  Good Luck Laura - fight til the end!!!

Laura will play for the championship against Russia's Ksenia Pervak on Rod Laver at 02:00 GMT, followed by the boys' singles.

At the same time, the girls', then boys' doubles will play on Margaret Court. (Subject to change to Hisense, I imagine. Roger was out wandering around in Federation Square last night due to a power outage at his hotel--more of the heat stress.) No clue whether Sport7 will broadcast Juniors, thus raising the possibility of streams, but I'll watch out for them.

I'm happy this is the lineup for the final. [:)] It reminds me of Roland Garros '07, the Junior title won by Alizé Cornet but where Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova came to attention as a semi-finalist. It would be nice if Laura pocketed another Grand Slam Juniors title, but both girls are making their marks in Melbourne however it goes. Good luck to both. [H]

Pervak over Robson 63 61 in 1:14. The commentators felt that Laura was fatigued. (Frustrated, too -- babe's got a dirty mouth on her, doesn't she? [;)] Thaz okay--I like mouthy little girls.)

Anyway, sorry Laura, congrats Ksenia.

Pervak is 17 and will likely enter the Tour full time this season. Robson has a little more time to go yet. Anyway she seems pleased enough with her plate & wombat. [H]

Ohhhhhhhh nooooooooooo!!!  I am soooooo sad about this!!  I thought when I woke up I would be reading 'Laura Robson wins second slam', 'Laura takes the AO crown' but no!! [:(][:(][:(]  Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!  She beat the number 1 seed but not the third seed! [:'(]  Oh I am so disappointed, I thought she would win her second slam.  Congrats Pervak, I suppose. [:'(]
